- Hawaii’s Seth Moniz captured the first World Surf League Championship Tour event title of his career Thursday, winning the Outerknown Tahiti Pro at the famed Teahupo’o break in French Polynesia.
The Honolulu native defeated Griffin Colapinto in the final, posting a two-wave total of 18.17 to win by 3.50 points.
Moniz became just the second Hawaii surfer to win the men's event, joining the late Andy Irons, who claimed the Tahiti Pro title twice.
The victory moved Moniz up 12 spots to No. 19 in the WSL world rankings.
In the women’s division, Kauai’s Gabriela Bryan and Oahu’s Carissa Moore remain Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, following their ninth-place finishes in Tahiti.
The Championship Tour next heads to Fiji, with competition scheduled to begin Aug. 25.

About an hour into practice, coaches instructed the Rainbow Warriors to head to the parking lot, where buses were waiting. Still in full uniform, the team boarded the buses and traveled to Kalani High School, where it completed the remainder of its training session.
“Just giving the guys a different environment and seeing if they can perform their goals in a different environment,” Hawai‘i coach Timmy Chang said. “Different part of training camp just to get them ready for what’s upcoming.”
The exercise was designed to put the players in an uncomfortable situation and force them to adapt to an unexpected change.
