- Last night's storms may have damaged your property, destroyed your car, or took out your power, but for two bicyclists making their way across the country, it came close to taking their lives. But as News 5's Kelly Baumgarten explains, thanks to one local family the boys are on the road again
Sam and Chris were pedaling their way across the country, until their ride was interrupted.
"We were rolling through just before the wild storms we've never seen anything like it."
The pair took off from San Francisco three weeks ago, heading home to Boston. With only their packs on their backs and a couple of sleeping bags, they've been camping out along the way.
"We have a tarp that's pretty much all we have and we probably would've strung that up," said Sam.
Sam and Chris were biking down highway 6 and when they were nearly struck by lightning, that's when they knew it was time to seek shelter.

- We've seen a number of damaging severe storms hit Nebraska already this spring. And we're bracing for more tomorrow.
We saw the power of a lightning strike in Hastings earlier this week. No one was injured by the strike, and while last year set a record for the least number of lightning deaths in the U.S. at 23 people, on average the National Weather Service says 52 people a die a year.
"It came through the screen and the glass and it just stuck right here."
A lightning bolt struck this tree in Hastings, sending a large splinter of wood plummeting into Linda Johnston's nearby apartment.
"It sounded like a sonic boom, only in our living room."
The force of the splinter shattered her front window clear across the apartment.
"These are some of the pieces that I pulled out of my couch this morning."
Johnston and her husband were home at the time and both were unscathed from the flying shards of gl...

- No action will be taken in the case that could have granted same sex couples the right to divorce in Nebraska. In a ruling filed this morning by the Nebraska Supreme Court, the case Nichols V Nichols has been dismissed.
In 2009, Bonnie Nichols and Margie Nichols were married in Iowa. Three years later, Bonnie filed for divorce in Nebraska. A district court granted Margie's motion to dismiss, but also allowed Bonnie to amend her complaint.
Without amending that complaint, Bonnie appealed the lower court's decision. The Supreme Court has ruled that because Bonnie appealed from a conditional order and not a final judgment, they lack jurisdiction over the appeal.
The justices decision would have set a precedent on whether Nebraska courts can grant divorce or dissolution in a same-sex marriage lawfully entered into in another state.
The Nebraska State Constitution currently maintains that only a marriage between a man and woman will be rec...

"We just wanna make ourselves known that we can do the same things men can do," said Samantha Swanson of Papillion, NE.
This week 35 young women from across Nebraska are in training to protect and to serve.
"It's like boot camp it's like preparing me for the future," said Corvin Koorey of Gretna, NE.
17 year old Corvin Koorey of Gretna has a dream of becoming a DEA officer. She's one of many young women aiming to change the dynamics of law enforcement.
"Historically law enforcement is a field geared for men because of the physicality of the job itself and I think it's important to include the dangers of the job," said Captain Mark Williams, Director of the Nebraska State Patrol.

Abe worked with the boy for 5 years, years later the two were reunited.

- Description
- Small town doctors in Nebraska are in short supply and they're getting ready to retire, putting the health of rural communities in jeopardy.
In the final part of her series -- Rural Medicine: In Critical Condition, News 5's Kelly Baumgarten continues her talk with a long time country doctor about the shortage and possible solutions.
Doctor Keith Shuey believes more medical schools need to work on recruiting students from rural communities. Dr. Shuey also says that the greater use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants could improve rural medicine.
Only 25% of newly educated doctors go into primary care and less than 5% of physicians go on to practice in rural communities, that's according to researchers at the George Washington University. Dr. Keith Shuey is one of the few primary care doctors left in rural Nebraska.
"When I go to a doc meeting, especially family practice docs... there's a lot of them sitting there with gray ...

- Description
- Gubernatorial nominee Pete Ricketts started the week with a big announcement. He chose current Lieutenant Governor Lavon Heidemann as his running mate for the November election. But, the selection has raised some questions from his opponent.
A day after the choice was made Democrat Chuck Hassebrook said, "Mr. Ricketts made this choice because he needed to make up for his lack of knowledge about government, agriculture, and small town Nebraska. While Mr. Ricketts has spent his life in a corporate board room or in his family's pro-baseball team's stadium, I have been here working to create opportunity for all Nebraskans."
Ricketts was in Hastings tonight at the Adams County Republican Convention. He says its just typical political warfare, but that Heidemann only adds to an already strong ticket.
Chuck Hassebrook has yet to select a running mate for his campaign. The two will meet in the general election in November. State Senator Les Seiler was al...

- Some Hastings students are using their creative thinking skills this summer. They're building model cars, designing iPhone apps and making pinball machines. All part of Camp Invention.
This is a national educational program. It's been held in Hastings the past four years. The camp encourages kids to solve problems and think outside the box.
This year's class has 36 inventors from 1st to 6th grade. Today some students were working on designing a machine that changes food they don't like into food they'd like to eat. One group of students designed an iPhone App that would convert spinach into cotton candy. That's just one of many creative ideas at camp.
"They are just thinking of something we could all use that could make our lives easier and they've come up with some great ideas like socks juice if you can't find your socks in the morning you drink this juice on the way to school and you grow socks."
"It's fun and you get to take apar...

- Description
- The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down two miles north of Hampton last night and one family felt the brunt of the twister. The Klawonn family made it to their basement minutes before their roof was ripped off their home.
It was a normal Tuesday night for the Klawonn family, sitting around the television watching the news, but their programming was interrupted.
"All of the sudden debris started hitting the house it sounded like someone was shooting the house it was really loud," said Janet Klawonn.
Watching the radar, the Klawonn family thought the storms would miss their home. They were wrong.
"Then you hear cracking all of the sudden and we all ran in the basement and you could hear the roof tearing off," said Janet.
"You could just feel the house shake and quiver from the winds and as soon as the roof peeled off and our ears popped I knew right away what was going on," said Kevin Klawonn....

- Damage survey teams from the National Weather Service office in Hastings have confirmed that a tornado touched down last night in Hamilton County.
The twister struck 2 miles north of Hampton. An official rating has not been released yet. Kirt Smith the Hamilton County Emergency Manager says the storms caused significant damage from east of Hampton to the Marquette area.
Two homes had their roofs blown off north of Hampton and strong winds overturned more than 10 coal train cars on Highway 34 west of Hampton. There were also reports of damage to grain bins, pivots, tree damage and broken windows. Residents lost power for a few hours in northern Hamilton County. But Smith says the damage could have been much worse.
"It's always bad when you're affected by a storm we have a lot of crop damage a lot of pivot damage and the homes that are damaged that's always a bad deal but the good thing is nobody got hurt nobody was killed in it."

- Description
- All roads in Grand Island are now open and passable this morning. Flooding caused streets to close last night; including the Highway 30 overpass and a portion of Broadwell Ave.
In Hastings it wasn't the rain, but the combination of high winds and dirt, that made for dangerous driving conditions.
Visibility was near zero last night in parts of the city as strong outflow winds pushed their way through. Gusts as high as 73 miles per hour were reported.
Two National Weather Service damage survey teams will be out today looking at damage in parts of Valley, Greeley, Nance, Howard, Sherman, Merrick and Polk Counties. Those are the areas with reports of tornadoes.
Weather service officials say they will not release any official confirmations or ratings until those surveys are completed.
