- Controversy Over Request for Mayor Candidate's Emails / October 17, 2014
- Date posted
- Description
- Some controversy in Grand Island as 2 city council members were denied the opportunity to discuss public records requests.
Council President Chuck Haase and Councilman Mike Paulick said they wanted to review the way public records requests are made after a request was put in for Haase's emails since he was elected to council.
City Attorney Bob Sivick said no.
Haase said he wanted to discuss this because he felt there was favoritism towards former mayor Margaret Hornady who made the request.
"The communication was that it was going to cost over $5,000 for this public records request and ultimately the city attorney gave it to them for free without any cost which meant the tax payers were then paying the cost," said Haase. "This is where I would object to the taxpayers paying $5,000 plus."
But Sivick said there was no favoritism. And he denied the discussion on this because there is nothing council can do to change the way ...

- The spread of the Ebola virus has people concerned worldwide. While that fear is warranted, health officials say getting Ebola isn't all that simple.
"Once they start showing symptoms they're considered contagious and you have to have direct contact with their blood and other body fluids, so that means that those body fluids have to get on you," Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department Communicable Disease Program Supervisor Tim Timmons said.
Once those fluids are on a person, they must also get into a cut or opening to have any effect.
The Centers for Disease Control is working to prevent the virus from spreading by adding temperature checks at international airports and updating personal protective equipment guidelines for health care workers.
The recent Ebola diagnosis of two Dallas nurses has prompted hospitals like CHI Health St. Elizabeth to toughen up on policies and procedures when it comes to treating infectious diseases. H...

- In the days following the death of Maury Lorence, the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission is calling for new laws regarding alcohol on party buses.
It's nothing new, the Executive Director of the commission, Hobert Rupe, said he brought the issues to state lawmakers in 2013, but that unfortunately it sometimes takes a tragedy to get something done.
Now, Rupe wants party buses to be required to have liquor licenses.
"What we're seeing is one of the unintended consequences of these party buses that go from bar to bar to bar and act more like rolling bars," said Rupe. "And if you're gong to act that way you should be regulated that way."
Rupe said a liquor license would hold these kinds of businesses more accountable, mainly when it comes to underage drinking.
"If you have a liquor license, patrol or LPD or any other law enforcement officer has a right to go to the bus to make sure that the liquor laws are being conformed," s...
