Raising nearly 6 million dollars to help build the National Cather Center in Red Cloud, a place to honor the legacy of the Nebraska author. But, with 900,000 dollars to go they're not done yet.

Cather's name is synonymous with Red Cloud.

- It's that time of year again. The crops are in the ground and farmers are spraying their plants to keep the pests away from their crops, but the Nebraska Department of Health and Human services is warning farmers to protect themselves. Exposure to pesticides can lead to serious illness and even death.
Pesticides can be a lifeline for Nebraska's agriculture industry.
"Those products are designed to kill a living organism," said UNL Extension Educator, Ron Seymour.
But if pesticides aren't used properly they can be dangerous.
"It could actually lead to death it could lead to long term tremors that you might have there are there are just a lot of issues related with the toxicity of those products," said Seymour.

Larry Klahn is retiring as the Veterans Service Administrator for Kearney County. He's held the position for twenty years. Finding Klahn's replacement has turned into a hiring fiasco.
"I saw the ad and thought I could probably do this." Sonja Budd of Minden was one of six applicants for the job. No interviews were conducted. But, on May 20th she was still appointed by the Veteran Service Committee and Kearney County Board of Supervisors.
Sonja says, "I received my letter of acceptance and then the next thing I knew somebody sent in a grievance."

- Two years ago today the McDowell's watched their home and business go up in flames, but out of the ashes an even more successful business is rising and the glasses are now full at Miletta Vista Winery in St. Paul.
Two years may have passed, but Mick McDowell can still recall the sinking feeling he felt as he watched his home and business burn to the ground.

- Monday night a Hastings staple closed its doors for good.
As one door closes, another opens.
Russ' Market closed at 6:00 P.M. to prepare to open up their new facility just steps away.
It was business as usual for Russ' Market Monday afternoon.
"I was like I better quick get some groceries, I know they're closing." Said Lisa Smith, a regular customer.
As cars circle the parking lot searching for a spot, the crowd builds inside the store.
"Mondays are a steady day, but I think people want to say their goodbyes, and they're curious." Said Steve Richardson, Store Director.
The original Hastings Russ' Market opened in 1986, Richardson has worked here from the start. He says the original store closing is bittersweet.
"It's tough to leave it, on the other hand I'm thrilled for the new one." Said Richardson.

- Rural Medicine is an ongoing crisis across Nebraska. There's an aging population with not enough care takers. One camp in Grand Island is hoping to change that. We do want to warn you, some of this video may be graphic for our viewers.
It's as close to the real deal as most kids will ever get.
"It's an over the top camp, that's the only way I can explain it," said Judy Weston, a Central Community College Educator and the camp overseer.
Volunteers are dressing up like accident victims. It's part of the four--day Youth Trauma camp in Grand Island. Organizers are hoping to spark interest in the medical field.
"I'll probably go into paramedicine," said Smith.
This is Jose Smith's second year at the camp. He's looking to go into the medical field for a bigger cause.

- A building collapse in Hastings disrupted traffic near the intersection of Burlington and I street early this evening. Darin Clark, Captain of the Hastings Fire Department said a Matheson Linweld industrial gas building came crashing down around 4 PM.
Debris from the fall covered 3 of the 4 lanes of traffic along Burlington Avenue. Hastings Police and Hastings Fire were on scene re--directing traffic. Authorities say that Hastings utilities has shut off power to the building. There were no injuries.
Sgt. Hessler with the Hastings Police Department says it does not appear this was a criminal act. The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined.

- Hopes were high for American Soccer fans watching the U-S take on Portugal in tonight's World Cup game.
The hearts of hundreds of thousands Americans were broken as they watched the US tie, 2 to 2 in the final seconds against Portugal in Sunday night's game.
The Kearney chapter of the fan club, American Outlaws hosted an official watch party at Fanatics Sports Bar.
The fan base started in 2007 in Lincoln, and now has chapters across the country.
"It's been huge. We started here in Kearney about a year ago. We have probably about 15 people at a game. At the last world cup game and this world cup game we've got over 100 people here, so it's exploding in Kearney and around the nation as well." Today, 90 area residents spent the afternoon chowing down on barbeque, sipping beer and scoping out 5 of Grand Island's top rated man caves. It's the 2nd annual man cave tour. We spoke with Rodney Oliver, the owner of one of the featured caves. The self-proclaimed die hard Husker fan says his man cave is a sanctuary.
"It's neat to come down here just to get away. After work you can come down here and relax and watch football and have friends over. It's a lot of fun."
Oliver says it took him nearly three years to design and create his dream man cave. Proceeds from the event go to junior achievements Kindergarten through 12th grade programs in Grand Island.

- It's almost time for nearly 400 runners to lace up their shoes and take their mark for the Hastings Marathon race. The trail could lead to Boston for some runners.
The city of Hastings is holding a Marathon, Half-Marathon and 5 K race on Saturday. This is the second annual race, but the first year for a full 26.2 marathon. The Hastings race is a Boston qualifier. Runners from twenty different states are competing. Race organizer Ron Alexander says this race will Hastings on the map in the running community.
The run is sponsored by Mary Lanning Healthcare. The start time for the full Marathon is at 6:15 AM The marathon course will begin near Hastings College and take you through many of the scenic areas of Hastings including Heartwell Park, down University Street, before ending at Lake Hastings.

- Making a difference where it matters most. That's the motto of United Way's Day of Action. Today, over 20 volunteers took to Libs Park in Hastings. The United Way of South Central Nebraska is teaming up with its partner organizations to revitalize the Born Learning Trail.
The trail was started several years ago. Geared towards preschool aged kids, it teaches A-B-C's and numbers mixed with physical activity.
"We love the idea of children getting outside, getting some energy out of their system and enjoying the park. It's a beautiful park."
The real goal of today is to inspire the community, to get out and give back.
Organizers say that could mean simply helping a neighbor or a friend. The official Day of Action is tomorrow, June 21st.

- As school lunch standards are beefing up, the available meal options are slimming down. But, one local farmer wants schools to give pigs a second chance.
Next week, pork farmer Elwyn Fitzke will speak to the Nebraska School Nutrition Association, hoping they'll consider putting more pork on school menus.
In 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama helped unveil federal nutrition standards in schools. That means more fruits and veggies, more whole grains, only fat-free and low-fat milk, and reducing the amount of saturated and trans fats.
Elwyn Fitzke is the co-owner of TEF Land and Livestock. He wants to ensure pork products aren't left off the healthy foods list.
"We have adopted new technologies to raise our pigs more efficiently."
He says pigs are no longer porky, slimming down considerably since the 1970's.
"Pigs at that time had anywhere from an inch and a half to two inches of fat."

For those wishing to volunteer in Pilger, go to Wisner-Pilger High School to be shuttled into town. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a photo ID to register on-site. At this time, the shuttles are scheduled to run through Saturday.
Organizers are requesting gift cards to most efficiently help families. Red Cross volunteers continue to assist with disaster response. Their fundraising campaign begins on Monday.

- One Grand Island girl is battling a cancer so rare, doctors are writing her into medical textbooks.
5 year old Katelyn Sybrandts is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation as she fights Ependymoblastoma. Katelyn must travel to Omaha every week for treatment. Her mother says Katelyn is sparkling her way through this battle.
"Some people say that they don't know how we do it, and they admire us and, really the person that should be the hero is Katelyn. She has to fight this horrible disease."
You can help out. Tonight, a fundraiser is being held inside the Skagway Five Points Banquet Center in Grand Island. It lasts until 10 PM.
All of the proceeds will help pay for travel and medical expenses during Katelyn's road to recovery.

- A 32 year-old Columbus man is dead after shooting at a Nebraska State Patrol Trooper and then leading authorities on a police chase.
The Colfax County Attorney says Jason Van Buskirk was killed after shooting at a trooper and leading authorities on a two-county pursuit, before ramming his pickup into several law enforcement vehicles.
Initial reports indicated shots at the scene were fired by the Nebraska State Patrol, the Columbus, and Schuyler Police Departments. An autopsy will be performed.
The investigation is ongoing. Investigative reports will be forwarded to the Colfax County Attorney. Nebraska law requires a grand jury be convened anytime someone dies while in custody or in the process of apprehension.
According to the Nebraska Department of Corrections, Van Buskirk served 5 years in prison of a 10-15 year sentence for robbery from 1999 to 2004.

- One man is dead after shooting at a Nebraska State Patrol Trooper and then leading authorities on a police chase.
Just before 1:30 this morning in Columbus, a State Patrol trooper responded to assist with reports of a domestic disturbance involving a man with a gun. As the trooper approached the man in his vehicle, the suspect fired at the trooper who then exchanged gunfire. Neither person was hit and a pursuit ensued. The chase lasted 10 minutes until the trooper lost sight of the suspect. Troopers, local law enforcement and the Nebraska State Patrol helicopter searched for the suspect.
His pickup was spotted just before 3 AM on Highway 30 on the east edge of Columbus. After officials tried to stop the pickup, the suspect ran over two sets of spike strips and continued driving on Old Highway 30 on the west side of Schuyler. - Monday's twister that struck the town of Pilger could be upgraded from an EF-4 to the highest rating possible. The Omaha-Valley National Weather Service is teaming up with outside contractors to rate the twister.
The tornado is currently rated as, "at least an EF-4." But, crews are now re-assessing the damage to see if that rating should be increased to an EF-5.
Two people were killed and more than a dozen were injured when the twister struck the small town of about 350 residents. Officials said they should know the rating by Friday.
In all, five tornadoes struck the area Monday. The last recorded F-5 tornado in Nebraska struck on May 5th, 1964, known as Terrible Tuesday. The tornado touched down southeast of Hastings and trekked nearly 70 miles to the northeast, lifting in Butler County.

- An unfamiliar name is making a push to be the next US Senator in Washington for Nebraska. Jim Jenkins will run on the ticket as an Independent. He's been on the campaign trail since October.
Tonight, Jenkins hosted a meet and greet at Murphy's in Hastings. He's a fifth generation cattle rancher from Custer County. Jenkins is up against facing Republican nominee Ben Sasse and Democratic nominee Dave Domina.
There are 230,000 non-partisan voters in Nebraska that couldn't vote in the May primary. Jenkins says those voters need a voice in Congress.
Jenkins has collected almost 6,000 signatures. Jenkins expects to hand those into the Secretary of State next week to be placed on the ballot.

- It's time to saddle up and head down to the Adams County Fairgrounds for the State High School Finals Rodeo. For the 12th year in a row students are arriving in Hastings to ride towards their goals.
On Thursday, cow boys and cow girls from across Nebraska galloped into Hastings for the State High School Finals Rodeo.
"The adrenaline rush, it's just great going out there and making a good ride and you just feel so good," said Landon Fear.
Thursday morning, students competed in calf and goat roping, and, the recent rain wasn't going to keep them from entering the ring.
"I'm excited we had the rain last night, but the arenas great looks like we have some great times," said Judy Mignery, Chairman of the Nebraska High School Rodeo.
More than 160 students came from across the state to compete, but only 4 from each event will make it to nationals.

- A group in Hastings is hitting the streets trying to collect bottled water for the residents of Pilger. The Mosaic Summer Program in Hastings is holding a bottled water drive. The effort lasts through the weekend.
You can stop by their stand on 7th and Lincoln Street by the old middle school. They'll be there Thursday and Friday from 8 to 4 and Saturday from 8 to noon if you would like to donate.
The Mosaic group says it's always nice to see residents step up and help in a time of need. The Salvation Army will be delivering the water to Pilger in the next few weeks.

- The general election is just less than 5 months away and a new poll is already indicating a tight race between Gubernatorial candidates.
The poll released this week by Public Policy Polling shows Republican nominee Pete Ricketts only leading by 4 points. The poll has Ricketts coming in at 42 percent of the votes, with Democratic nominee Chuck Hassebrook trailing just behind at 38 percent. Libertarian Mark Elworth has just 8 percent of the votes.
Also according to the poll, voters are viewing Hassebrook more favorably. Hassebrook came in with an 11 net favorability ratingcCompared to a negative five for Ricketts.
Public Policy Polling surveyed 902 registered voters on June 11th and 12th. The poll was commissioned by the Hassebrook campaign.

- Saddle up! It's time for the Nebraska State High School Finals Rodeo.
The rodeo kicks off on Friday at the Adams County Fairgrounds in Hastings.
Savannah Jordan is a freshman from Harrisburg. She's competed in six rodeos, but this is her first time qualifying for state. Despite the pressure, Savannah says she just wants to have fun and take in the experience.
The rodeo begins Friday at 11 AM and runs through Sunday. Finals will take place Saturday at 1 PM.

- Some of the state's worst offenders are out of prison and back roaming the streets, without completing their prison sentence. It took an Omaha World Herald investigation for Nebraska's public officials to notice the mistake. That's raised another red flag on the problems within the state's prison system.
Sen. Les Seiler says he's shocked to hear that Nebraska prison officials have been incorrectly calculating the sentences of prisoners. He says the correct way has been clearly spelled out by the state legislature and the Supreme Court.
More than one hundred of the state's worst offenders are no longer behind bars. Instead they're back on the streets. And, the state held the door wide open.
Gov. Dave Heineman: "I'm very unhappy with what occurred. I intend to hold those who were responsible accountable in the meantime our focus is on those who were out who shouldn't be."

- If you build it they will come. Hundreds of Hastings residents showed up to Duncan Field tonight to catch a glimpse of the new field of dreams.
It's been almost 40 years since this stadium has received a major upgrade. The upgrade is a home run for the city of Hastings.
The city held opening ceremonies for the newly renovated stadium. Mayor Vern Powers and Hastings College baseball coach Steve Spongberg threw out the first pitch.
The ballpark was built in 1940. In 2010, voters passed a half cent sales tax to fund project. The 3.3 million dollar renovation project includes a new press box, dugouts, concession stand, and new seating that will accommodate 1,300 people.
Over 300,000 dollars was also raised through private fundraising. The aging facility has not received any major renovations for over 40 years.

- iPads and laptops are becoming a part of everyday education.
School may be out, but today staff with Grand Island Public Schools headed to camp.
The district is quickly implementing iPads and laptops among everyday learning, this voluntary two day camp is getting the staff as tech savvy as their students.
"A lot of teachers don't know what to do with the new programs and the new technology." Said Angie Whitsett, 5th grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary.
At the Four C's of Summer, Grand Island teachers are teaching teachers.
"We're supporting teachers and staff to use that technology and the best way to engage kids." Said Josh McDowell, Director of 21st Century Learning and Teaching.
The High School started its one to one iPad program last year.
This fall each middle school student will be handed their own laptop.

- Two people were killed in Monday's storms. One, a five year-old girl who died after she was likely thrown from a trailer home on Main Street.
Stanton County officials have identified her as Callista Dixon of Pilger. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says Dixon was pronounced dead upon arrival to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Sheriff Unger believes the home took a direct hit from the tornado and likely threw the girl and other occupants from the home.
Authorities have identified the second victim as 74 year-old David Herout, of Clarkson. He died after his vehicle left the roadway during the storm. Officials say Herout was ejected from the vehicle around on a county road about 2 miles east of Pilger.

- Officials are rating the tornado that struck the town of Pilger as an EF4, with wind speeds of 166 to 200 miles per hour. Crews with the Omaha-Valley National Weather Service were surveying the damage today.
Survey teams found several damage points that indicate an EF4 tornado. That's the second-strongest rating on the scale that measures tornado strength.
Officials say four tornadoes likely touched the ground during the massive storms Monday. The first tornado that touched down west of Stanton has damage that suggests at least an EF3 rating, with wind speeds of 136 to 165 miles per hour. It's believed to have traveled 15 miles on the ground.
Crews are still surveying damage and haven't yet determined how long the Pilger tornado was on the ground.
Crews have been assessing the damage across northeast Nebraska. The Omaha National Weather Service says there are several EF-4 damage points in Pilger.

- Newly released video from a Nebraska State Patrol flyover shows the full impact of the Pilger devastation. The video shows houses, businesses, the town's school and City Hall flattened. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says 75 percent of the village was destroyed by the tornado. Unger has also confirmed that two people died in the storms.
A motorist died after a single-vehicle accident that occurred on a country road just east of Pilger. A five year old girl also died after she was likely thrown from a trailer home on Main Street. A farmhouse that also served as a daycare was also hit by the twister.
Last night all of Pilger was evacuated and a Red Cross shelter was opened in Wisner-Pilger High School in Wisner. This morning, residents of Pilger were allowed back in to collect belongings. Entrances to Pilger are open to emergency personnel only.

- Governor Dave Heineman will be surveying the damage in Pilger on Tuesday. The Governor issued a state of emergency for Pilger and the surrounding area.
That declaration allows him to send in the Nebraska National Guard. News 5 spoke to his office and was told there are 50 troops on stand by ready to respond.
Pilger residents are being bused to the Red Cross Shelter at the Wisner-Pilger High School in Wisner. Entrances to Pilger are closed for emergency crews only. Emergency responders are on scene in Stanton, Cuming, and Wayne counties.
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says crews are working in Pilger, Wisner and Stanton searching for people trapped under debris. The agency has received reports of damage from local emergency managers in both Cuming and Wayne counties.
