- A father in Georgia is facing murder charges after his son died after being left in a hot car for hours.
Today, in New Mexico a little girl was rescued from a locked pickup truck after more than an hour. She survived.
News 5's Kelly Baumgarten shows us how dangerous being locked in a car can be this time of year.
Unfortunately, it's something we've all seen on the news recently people leaving their pets and even their own children in hot cars. So, I'm gonna do a little experiment I'm locking myself inside my car.I have the windows shut the air conditioner off and I'm gonna see how long it takes for this thermometer to reach 100 degrees.
Now, it's only about 79 degrees outside, it's not that hot, but what many people don't realize is that even when temperatures are only in the 60's outside cars can still reach temperatures of up to 110 degrees. Right now the thermometer is at 83 degrees so I'll check back with you guys in a little bit ...

- Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. One summer school program in Hastings is fighting back against the issue.
Nebraska is one of 5 states across the country to receive a grant called "food smart families" from Conagra. Representatives from Nebraska's Extension program are teaching students how to prepare healthy food. Today, 75 children from Hastings took part in the program at Lincoln elementary.
After each day, the children are sent home with a bag full of ingredients so they can make the healthy recipes at home with their families. Extension educators say teaching children healthy habits can make a difference.
"If you know how to prepare your own foods then you aren't going to depend on fast food for your family to eat," said Extension Associate, Deb Unterseher.
"Because it helps us get strong," said 7-year-old Cody Landen.
The "Food Smart Families" Program runs Monday through Wednesday until...

- It's wheat harvest for many farmers in the Heartland. While most are using high-tech, expensive farm equipment in the fields...
One Clay Center farmer, Lee Sherman, is using machinery from the early 1900s.
"I started using a binder somewhere in the 20's the 1920's. We thrash this stuff, we bind the wheat, put it up in bundles and load it on trailers which you can see the trailers behind me. We store it and when it comes to show time everybody comes and they get the information about the trusty days and the Platte Valley days. Why? Because you got to love it. You got to like to work around this stuff, this old machinery. The people that were raised in those days, they were tough to put up with equipment that they had to put up with. We did approximately 3 acres here today and I started getting things ready at 9:30. We did four trailer loads in about two and a half hours. This entire field right here is 9 acres. It would have taken us most of the day."

- Officials are closely monitoring the groundwater in Hastings after a leak from the city landfill released contaminants into area water wells.
Michael Sullivan is an attorney who represents the city of Hastings for Environmental matters. He says several contaminants have been detected in monitoring wells and in one private well on Marion Road. Crews connected that home to the city water system to prevent the residents from being exposed to the contaminants.
One of the contaminants, trichloroethylene, is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as a possible carcinogen, and long-term exposure can present health risks.
Sullivan says the maximum level of that chemical permitted in drinking water is 5 parts per billion. The city found 2.5 parts per billion in the ground water, but Sullivan says that number keeps rising. He says residents should not be concerned, because the city's water is not contaminated.

- Grand Island residents are set to be a part of Hall County's first ever mail in ballot. Voters will be asked whether or not to approve a 69.9 million dollar proposal to renovate several elementary school buildings.
In hopes of gaining voter support, the School Board is creating a community committee. While the school district is legally allowed to inform voters of the issues, they can't tell them how to vote.
"What the statute does not allow us to do, and it's appropriate, you can't use taxpayer dollars to do that, so the community group will encourage people to get out and vote... and encourage them to vote affirmatively," GIPS Superintendent Dr. Rob Winter said.
Dr. Winter says they hope to have the committee formed by the end of the month.

What's causing the change? With new technology like social media and text messaging, the need for the postal service isn't what it used to be. But in many small towns here in Nebraska, people still depend on it.
Three years ago, the US Postal Service announced a plan to close nearly 3,700 Post Offices across the country to cut costs. But, after receiving backlash from small towns, they amended their decision. Instead, they decided to cut hours.
Over the past few months, 9 area post offices have had community meetings to determine the fate of their locations. One of those was a meeting held in June for the Giltner Post Office. Residents say they depend on their local service.

For many, the cracks and booms of fireworks can trigger painful flashbacks.
"It gave me goose bumps and I just broke out in this cold sweat," said Veteran Zeke Zornes.
Zornes served in the Korean War for 15 months: "And I never knew from one day to the next if I was gonna be alive to come home or not because a lot of my buddies were killed."
For many Veterans, the sounds of fireworks can mimic the sounds of combat.
"I started getting jumpy and jittery again and all of that and I kept saying well it's just fireworks, it's just fireworks," Zornes said.

The latest Drought Monitor report issued Thursday shows that just over 61% of Nebraska is now fully out of the drought. That compares with only 8% of the state with adequate moisture levels this time last year.
1% of the state, located in southwest Nebraska, is still listed in severe drought, with 14% at moderate drought levels. Another 24% of the state ranks as abnormally dry.
The condition in Kansas is far worse; with nearly 100% of the state at some sort of drought level, including over 12% with extreme drought.
The significant rainfall in portions of Nebraska that helped reduce those drought conditions also qualified for the record books.
The National Weather Service in Hastings said this past June was the third wettest on record for Grand Island and the fifth wettest for Hastings and Kearney.

For years roundabouts have been a topic of controversy across the country.
"I think they're annoying it can just be a regular intersection they don't need to have a roundabout it just makes it kind of confusing," said Alec Baker.
Right now there are only two roundabouts in Hastings, both at Central Community College, but Lincoln has 34 roundabouts with three under construction.

And they could be safer. Russ Rader with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety out of Virginia says studies show intersections converted to roundab...

These are pictures taken by Hastings football coach Erik Emerson. His players approached him about helping Pilger.
Emerson then contacted Wisner-Pilger football coach Brett Bauer. Bauer said area farmers were in desperate need of help clearing their fields.
Twin tornadoes destroyed the Stanton County town on June 16th.

- Description
- University of Nebraska Kearney is using new technology to stay hydrated and improve the environment one bottle at a time. The campus will soon have 12 new EZ H2O stations.
It's a move that encourages students to use fewer plastic bottles. The stations allow them to refill their water bottles. These EZ H2O products have a sensor that turns on a stream of filtered water. Three are currently located on campus. In the first six months, they've saved almost 16 thousand water bottles in one residence hall.
The availability of the product encourages folks to consider drinking more water, staying hydrated, and it encourages people to consider filling a cup instead of buying a bottle of water.
UNK students came up with the idea after traveling to a conference on the campus of the University of Colorado Boulder. They noticed the stations all over campus.
To encourage students to use refillable water bottles, all UNK students living in residen...

- Description
- It's been a topic of debate in Hastings for the past four years, whether to close off 9th Street Between Ash and Elm Avenues. Hastings City Council was supposed to discuss the project on Monday, but the issue was tabled.
It takes commuters right through the heart of the Hastings College campus. Talks of closing 9th street between Ash and Elm Avenues have been ongoing since 2010.
"I usually take 9th street here just to get to Burlington. It's a faster and easier way than going around."
Hastings City Council delayed discussion of the issue until July 14th.
"Anyone who may have concerns will have the opportunity to speak."
Hastings City Administrator Joe Patterson says they postponed the issue because two City Council members were absent and paperwork still needs to be filled out.
Patterson also notes that leadership turnover at the college has led to delays.
"There's been a little bit of a change in p...
