- Description
- 'Vote Yes for Kids.' That's the message one group has for Grand Island voters. They are in support of the nearly 70 million dollar school bond issue.
"In a new building it's a dream," said Jeanna Fiala, the Principal at Jefferson Elementary.
A 69.9 million dollar proposal is on the ballot in Grand Island that would renovate and rebuild several of the Grand Island Public School buildings.
One of them is Jefferson Elementary school.
"It's never really quiet at Jefferson because we really don't have anything keeping the noise out," said Fiala.
Fiala says that the combination of open classrooms and the growing number of kids is tainting the learning experience for her students.
"The concept was teachers would have one area to do their planning and the rest would be wide open. I would stand here and I'd be able to look across the building and see what everyone else was doing. How that made sense, I can't tell you,...

- Description
- Hall County farmers learned earlier this spring that ag land was valued at a 40% increase.
Now the Hall County Board of Supervisors is in the midst of budget discussions, and are at odds over how to spend the money.
With higher land values, comes higher taxes, thus more money available for the budget.
Supervisors are trying to determine what's best for the taxpayers and the county.
"We're trying to make the tax dollars stretch as far as they can go." Said Supervisor, Gary Quandt.
The Board of Supervisors have a growing list of budgetary needs, including salary increases for some county workers.
"It's only fair. We've got union employees and non union employees and we have to treat everybody fairly." Said Quandt.
Courthouse renovations are a priority for the county.
While they may not see major decisions made this fiscal year, there are smaller projects that some Supervisors say need to be c...

- Description
- It's been an issue in Kearney and Grand Island. We're talking about chickens within city limits. Now, Hastings City Council could be voting on the ordinance.
Sarah Hoops, a member of Hastings City Council will help outline proposed changes in the city ordinance to consider chickens as pets.
Back in March Grand Island decided against upping the number of chickens a resident is allowed to own from 4 to 8.
Hoops says the ordinance would help promote healthier behaviors in the community.
Meaning kids are more likely to eat what they plant and produce themselves.
"It's a good way to fall and step with an idea of improving public health and it's in line with a movement towards urban agriculture and the idea of shortening the distance between farm and fork," said Hoops.
The proposed changes would limit the number of chickens someone could have. It would also require them to be enclosed in a healthy environment. Sla...

Ross, executive director of the Head Start Child Development and family program in Hastings says the main reason for the increase is under employment. She says only 2% of Nebraska residents receiving any type of assistance are unemployed.

- In the middle of farming season, the equipment shop that farmers in Clay County rely on is facing major renovations. The John Deere shop in Fairfield went up in flames last night. It's being ruled a total loss.
A dozen different fire departments worked through the night to put out the blaze.
"This is probably one of the larger fires we've had in the county," said Clay County Sheriff Jeff Franklin.
Franklin says the large amount of fuel, oil and other combustibles inside the Oregon Trail Dealership triggered multiple explosions.
"It has a lot of different roofs and ceilings and stuff so it's been a hard fire to fight," Franklin said.
There were no injuries during the blaze. But, the building is a total loss.
"One of the buildings is only being held up by several combines that are sitting in there that are pretty much melted underneath," said Franklin.

But, one immigration advocacy group says there's more to the issue than meets the eye.
The Governor says the main concern is making sure those kids don't receive any federal or state funded taxpayer benefits, including for education.
But, Yolanda Chavez-Nuncio says these children need help. She's a former chair of the Nebraska Latino American Commission, and a representative with the Saint Mary's Immigration Program. She says parents wouldn't send their children to the country for education, but that it's a matter of safety.

Now a surveillance video from the day the tornadoes hit is making the rounds on social media. The more than 10 minute long video shows the exact moment when the EF-4 tornado hit, as the nearly 200 mile per hour winds demolished the store in a matter of seconds.
The video also shows as those hiding inside the store make it out to safety. Not everyone was as lucky. The two tornadoes killed two and injured more than a dozen. One of those killed was 5 year-old Calista Dixon.
Just yesterday, Nebraska's Congressional delegation wrote to President Obama urging him to approve Governor Heineman's disaster declaration. The declaration is for the widespread storms, including tornadoes, hail, wind, and flood damage between June 14th and June 21st.

- US Senator Deb Fischer announced this morning she's heading a bipartisan effort to incentivize employers to provide paid parental or medical leave.
Senator Fischer and US Senator Angus King of Maine introduced The Strong Families Act this morning.
While the current Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 requires employers of more than 50 to provide unpaid leave, it does not involve paid time off.
The new legislation would create a tax credit to encourage employers of any size to voluntarily offer paid leave for workers.
Senator Fischer says with more than half of women working as primary breadwinner, workplace flexibility has become a necessity for 21st Century families.
She goes on to say that it's not just children who require personal care and attention, it's also elderly parents.

Demolition began this afternoon on the front of the building. Crews say the work will continue through Friday.
The new Russ's Market opened June 25th just behind the old one. Since then, crews have been clearing out the old building.
After the debris is cleared, that area will be used as a parking lot. But, crews say the finished product could take a couple months.

"Trying to make real injuries for them, so they have to do first aid, along with the accident investigation. That includes evidence collection, measuring the scene, photographing the scene like they would in a real life situation."
Fire and rescue personal from Grand Island, Kearney and Hastings participated in the training. The victims were ...

- News 5 at 10 - Hall County no longer upholding detainers from ICE / July 14, 2014

- Description
- For years the Hall County Jail, and counties across the country have agreed to hold detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE.
"The request is to hold them for up to 48 hours." Said Fred Ruiz, Director of the Hall County Jail.
When an inmate is arrested on state or local charges, ICE will issue a detainer if they suspect the inmate is in the country illegally.
"The problem is the request doesn't come from a judge." Said Ruiz.
Recent court cases across the country including Nebraska's Sarpy County are challenging these requests.
Fred Ruiz, Director of the Hall County Jail says he sought legal advice including that of the Chief Deputy Hall County Attorney.
"We operated how we thought appropriate until we were told otherwise." Said Ruiz.
Chief Deputy Hall County Attorney, Jack Zitterkopf says without judicial review, the ICE detainer forms don't protect the county.

- Date posted
- Description
- The State Fire Marshall is working to determine the cause of a massive downtown fire that sent flames and smoke into the Grand Island skyline late last night.
While no one was injured in the fire at 3rd and Elm Street, officials have determined the building was completely destroyed.
Crews were called to fire around 8 PM last night. Officials say the fire appears to have started in Ron's Transmission. Departments from Grand Island, Grand Island Rural, Hastings and St. Paul all responded.
The building houses Ron's Transmission, Edward's Audio and a local thrift store. The fire caused part of the building to collapse, making at least the thrift shop a total loss.
While it appeared the fire was put out by 11:00 last night, crews remained on the scene this morning putting out hotspots.

- News 5 at 5 - Area Farm Crops Damaged By Severe Weather / July 10, 2014

- Description
- Last night's storms came out at a bad time for area farmers. Many are now left trying to figure out their next move after crops were damaged even destroyed.
Many corn crops around the area were hit with wind, hail, and heavy rain. Fields were littered with broken tassels and defoliated stocks. But it wasn't just the corn crops that suffered. Beans and wheat crops were also left in poor condition.
Local agricultural producer, Michael Schukei was caught off guard by last night's storms.
"This is kind of the storm you didn't see coming. Everything yesterday was business as usual, getting pivots going, things looked wonderful. By nine o'clock last night they looked like this."
Farmers like Schukei say it's not too late to start re-planting. But, with it being so late in the growing season crop producers know it would be a gamble.
"It would have to be a pretty unique situation in order to look at re-planting anything at thi...
