- News 5 at 5 - UNK To Launch New Broader Special Education Program / August 21, 2014
- Date posted
- Description
- Many schools in rural Nebraska are struggling to find qualified special education teachers, but the University of Nebraska at Kearney is launching a new program to help fill those gaps.
The program at UNK will certify Special Education students for Kindergarten through 12th Grade. In the past, you would have to get two separate certificates for K through 6th and 7th through 12th grades, but this new program is important especially for rural school districts who can only afford one teacher.
In rural Nebraska, qualified special education teachers aren't easy to track down.
"A lot of schools our size have 200 students k-12 and a lot of schools in a rural area our size only have one special education teacher so were fortunate to have three but it is a shortage," said Vic Young, Principal at Wilcox-Hildreth Elementary and High School.
Vic Young is the principal of Wilcox-Hildreth Elementary and High School. While they are lucky enough to h...

- Date posted
- Description
- ACT scores from last school year have been released and the numbers show that Nebraska is above the national curve in the standardized t test. Hastings didn't do nearly as well, but there's a reason for that.
Nebraska's average ACT composite score was 21.7, topping the national average of 21.0. 36 is the highest score.
In the Tri-Cities, Kearney came in at top at with an average composite score of 22.1 and Grand Island at 20.6. However, Hastings High is at 19.1. But why is that?
"Our score is lower because we are testing every kid," said Hastings High Principal Jay Opperman.
Hastings High offers a unique state Pilot Program that has EVERY junior take the ACT free of charge. The program has brought scores down for the district, but Opperman said the advantages go beyond the numbers.
"Maybe we will have a handful of students that get a score that says, wow, maybe I should be thinking about something different and the...

- It's been nearly two years since the tragic Blue Hill school bus accident that killed four. One of those students, 18 year-old Dustin Tesdahl. Today the South Central Children's Services held a 5k run in his memory.
He may have only lived for 18 years, but Dustin Tesdahl left an imprint on the hearts of everyone who knew him.
"I think Dustin unfortunately was taken away from us too early and I wish I could see the young man he would have become," said Dustin's social worker, Brenda Aipperspach.
Dustin was headed to Hastings College to run track, and now his community
is lacing up their sneakers and running for him.
"One of his favorite things was to have me come out and time him on the running," said Dustin's stepfather.
The 2nd annual 5k run was held at Lake Hastings on Satuday.
"Dustin loved to run that was just his passion so this is a way to promote that legacy," said Brenda.

- It's been nearly two years since the tragic Blue Hill school bus accident that killed four. One of the victims was a senior at Blue Hill, 18 year-old Dustin Tesdahl.
Those who knew him said he didn't have the easiest life, but that didn't hold him back. This weekend many will be lacing up their running shoes in memory of Dustin.
His life may have been short, but Blue Hill senior Dustin Tesdahl touched the lives of everyone he knew.
"He was just a special kid he was just somebody that would just light up the room when he walked in it," Brenda Cook said.
Brenda Cook is the resource development specialist at South Central Children's Services.
Dustin spent part of his life in and out of foster care, but Cook said that doesn't define him.
"It just seems so unfair to kind of tag him with the fact that he was a foster child, because to me and all of us here at South Central he was much, much more than that and he...

Every few weeks Arden Svoboda collects the donations inside each bucket. Two weeks ago he found something he wasn't expecting.
Inside the bucket, he found $29.35, what else he found, committee members say is priceless.
"I saw inside, this envelope. I thought it was a bit unusual." Said Svoboda.
