- It's an area many of you drive by every day, located off Highway 281. A group of nearly 70 workers are swarming the fields this season to do detassling and help Nebraska farmers with their crops. Maybe you've seen them on your commute to work.
But, in the midst of their jobs, there is one big issue weighing heavy on their minds -- the crisis at the border.
In the Target 5 Investigation: Working Through a Crisis, we talk with some of those workers about their journey from the Mexican border to the Cornhusker state.
The sun beats down on this summer evening as the workers sit shaded under the tall trees. Pesticides, heat stroke, dehydration. Just a few key words used during this lesson.
"Nobody ever thinks that agricultural work is dangerous, but when you're out working in the fields with the chemicals and pesticides and the heat it's really easy to get injured," said Jody Stutzman, Case Manager for Proteus Inc.

- Husker game day may have been yesterday, but It was a sea of red today at the Nebraska state fair.
Fair goers showing their husker pride by dressing in red for the first ever red out day at the nebraska state fair.
A pep rally was held this afternoon with an appearance from Husker cheerleaders.
Officials with UNL say they are excited to have this opportunity to celebrate husker football at the nebraska state fair.
"We love it, we wear red everyday so we love it when other people share our passion for the university and for our husker teams so were loving this day at this fair, were loving everyones enthusiasm and were hoping this is an event that gets bigger and bigger every year."
There was even a competition for the huskers biggest fan.
20 people were randomly selected to participate, they had 15 seconds to get up on stage and prove they were the biggest fan.

Today musicians from across the state competed in the Galaxy of Stars Finals at the Nebraska State Fair in hopes of launching a career in music.
22 contestants competed in the finals... for over 9–thousand dollars in prizes and recording sessions.
The competition is open to singers, songwriters, instrumentalists and dancers.
To qualify performers must enter a local partnering talent search competition.
The Galaxy Stars Talent search got started back in 1993, and its founder, Wynne Adams says it grows every year.
"I think the talent is exceptional in the past we've had great talent from across the state of nebraska but i think as the program grows and the word gets out with all of the talent searches out there we just keep getting better talent."

- From the "mud soup" parking lots, to lower attendance, and even cancelling some events. The 2014 Nebraska state fair has been at the mercy of summer storms.
Earlier today the national weather service was predicting that severe weather might hit the state fair. A few hours ago the skies were looking pretty cloudy, there were some strong winds. but now skies are clear. The national weather service says the storms have moved south east of the fair, but there is still a chance of thunderstorms for tonight.
Heavy winds, lightening, and rain have taken a toll on this years state fair.
"We've had quite a bit of rain through the week and i think probably the most affect has been in our parking lots," said Joseph McDermott Executive Director of the Nebraska State Fair.

- From Older Nebraskan's Day, to Cattlemen Day, today it was time for County Fairs to shine at the Nebraska State Fair. 8 different counties came together to promote their own local fairs.
Just a few hours ago there was a county fair parade right here...each county had the opportunity to design their own float, and the winning county took home a trophy and a check.
"It gives us a sense of pride to be able to come to the state fair and show people of the state that we are proud of our county and we do have a county fair," said Terry Christensen, President of the Loupe Valley Ag Society.
Every year the state fair takes a day to recognize the importance of county fairs.
"I just think its a good deal because that's what the state fair is about all of the county fairs coming together and showing their products and livestock," said Kevin Jorgensen, Howard County Fair Manager.

- It's like The Voice and America's Got Talent at the Nebraska State Fair.
The competition is a chance for everyone from kids to adults to get the chance to earn a recording session in Nashville. Those that qualified for the semi-finals will face off Saturday on the Bristol Windows Stage at the Fair from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The finals are being held on Sunday from 1 to 5.
Former News 5 reporter Ginger ten Bensel will be one of the Finals judges, and she says this is really important for the kids in the competition.
"I think it can really make a difference in a child's life, especially if they can compete and grow and learn, and allow this to be a stepping stone for them for the future," Ginger said.
In between the performances and the winners being named on Sunday, you can catch Ginger herself singing on the Bristol Windows Stage as well.

- There are hundreds of strains of E. Coli and although most are harmless there are a few that can make you sick, some can even kill you. One Hastings girl had to experience the horror of the food borne illness firsthand.
15 year old Tasia Theoharis was just a week away from starting high school.
"I missed the beginning of my freshman year so that's been hard," Tasia said.
And the last thing she expected was to have to battle a life-threatening bacteria. Earlier this month, Tasia started to experience severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
Tasia was diagnosed with E. Coli. At first Tasia was under the care of Mary Lanning in Hastings, but she soon developed hemolytic uremic syndrome or HUS.
"The bacteria attacked her blood cells which is part of this hemolytic uremic syndrome, so the blood cells kind of broke down into pieces and clogged up her kidneys and made them shut down."

Thousands of people pass through to see a work of art come to life.
It's the Quilt Exhibit...
And it's bigger than last year's exhibit.
There are 662 quilts on display.
The quilts are judged by a national certified judge...
And took three days to examine before prizes were given out.
Kay Grimminger, a volunteer for the exhibit,
says each year the styles change.
"Quilting has been here for centuries but quilting is always growing and expanding and lots of new things are on the forefront."
She says that modern quilts sometimes use brighter colors and designs that are less repetitious.

- Four different candidates on the ballot for U.S senator debated Monday at the Heartland Event Center on the site of the State Fair. Hundreds came out to watch.
A hot topic as of late has been immigration reform. Especially with recent events where 200 undocumented children entered Nebraska without even Governor Dave Heineman's knowledge. It wasn't a surprise when the topic of immigration reform came up.
There were two unverified candidates that were in the debate who are still trying to get enough signatures on the ballot. Voters have between now and November to decide who the next US senator will be.

- Tri-City authorities are investigating the possibility of a counterfeit cash crime ring, with almost daily reports of counterfeit cash in Grand Island and four reports in Hastings in the past week.
"A man came through the drive through, ordered a Jr. Bacon. That's a small amount," said Stacy Scribner.
Scribner is the Co-Manager of the Hastings Wendy's on South Burlington. She said the suspect handed the cashier a $20 bill on August 17th.
"My drive through operator thought it looked kind of funny but he had already driven through," Scribner said.
But Scribner says she knew at first glance that the bill was a fake.
"So I called the police and reported it," said Scribner.
That was the second report of four that Hastings Police received in just nine days. Sgt. Steven Murphy said this is uncommon.

- For many people, the Nebraska State Fair is the highlight of their summer, but it can come at a high price. One of the best days to come to the fair is next Tuesday, the fair will be offering a Two Dollar Tuesday where admission and fair rides are reduced to $2 and even some of the vendors will be offering 2 dollar specials.
"I mean coming to a fair you've gotta expect the higher prices," said Jacob Reynoso of Bennington.
The Nebraska State Fair is full of fun and games but it can put a dent in your wallet.
"The prices are just the prices were willing to pay what it takes to come," said Kim Canfield of Wood River.
From the food, to the carnival rides and games if you don't know how to save it could cost you.
If you plan on riding more than a few rides the best option is the bracelet. For 22 dollars on week days and 25 on weekends, you can ride all the rides for that day until the fair closes.

- From classic cars to hot rods, the 5th annual Melon Roast Car Show put them all on display at Hastings Brickyard Park this afternoon.
"My car is a 1934 Hudson and it's a model they made for 6 months. I bought it in high school and I've owned the car since 1961." Said Bob Johnson.
"This is our car show. We have approximately 250 cars in the lot. This is the biggest. We've ranged from 196 to 216." Said David Schawang, President of Melon Roasters Car Club.
"This is a 1973 MGB V8 Conversion. It's a little bit of freedom. It's the closest I can get to a Harley and still have 4 wheels." Said Mike Grieco.
"It's nice to see a lot of different cars." Said Taidyn Johnson, grandson of one entrant.

- Former owner of KHAS-TV, Ulysses Carlini Sr, died Sunday at the age of 89.
He passed away at home with his wife and family.
Carlini began his television career in 1953 in Henderson, Kentucky, handling announcing, writing, sales and production duties.
He even hosted his own kids program on Saturday mornings.
In 1968 he moved to North Platte assuming the position of Vice President/General Manager of KNOP-TV.
In September 1997, Carlini partnered with Dick Shively to purchase KHAS-TV... creating Greater Nebraska Television Inc.
His son, Ulysses Carlini Jr. served as the general manager of KHAS-TV until last month.
The elder Carlini was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
There will be a rosary at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte on Wednesday... a funeral service will follow on Thursday.

- The state fair kicked off to a hot and sunny start, but by Friday night thunderstorms hit quickly bringing heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 50 mph, prompting officials to take action to keep fair goers safe, eventually closing down the midway.
On Friday, the storm was about 10 miles away and that was when midway officials decided to shut down the tall rides, because of the lightning that was in the area.
Once the storm was 2 miles away they made the decision to close down everything.
"I just heard some screams coming from the barns," said Brett Klanecky, Supervisor of Pizza Hut. "A big gust of wind came through and i looked down and I was actually picking up some of our stuff trying to get ready for it saw a couple of umbrellas flying through the air."

- The State Fair is not the only big event in town. The Oregon Trail rodeo kicks off Friday night at the Adams County Fairgrounds. Friday morning, area 4th graders had their chance to learn from the pro's.
Today 450 area 4th graders galloped into Hastings. They're learning all about the role rodeo has played in the cornhusker states history.
For the past 8 years it's been a part of their Nebraska state history curriculum. The kids stop at different stations at the Adams County Fairgrounds, where they learn rodeo 101 from cowboys and cowgirls.
"These kids get to come out and see what the rodeos all about it gives them firsthand knowledge so that when they're sitting in the stands and they see an event they can really relate to it," said Troy Heinert with the Oregon Trail Rodeo.
The kids learn about taking care of the rodeo animals, they even get to simulate several rodeo events from barrel racing to cattle roping and rough stock.

- Each year millions of people become ill across the country from eating
poorly prepared food.
That's why local health inspectors were on site today giving the green
light to vendors at the fair.
There are just about 100 food serving vendors here, that includes all the ones outsideand even those that serve samples in places like the exhibition building.
All of them must pass an inspection in order to serve food here at the
fair.
This is the 5th year that local vendor, Cactus Jacks is serving up burgers
to Nebraska State Fairgoers.
From burgers to pulled pork this comfort food has been rated among the top vendors at the fair three years running.
"It's everything for our business." Said Owner of Cactus Jacks, Jeff Leo.
Serving an average of 1,000 mouths a day, food health and safety remains
a priority for the mobile restaurant.
