- With a decision from the President on the Keystone XL Pipeline project on the horizon, Nebraskans are taking to the nation's capitol to ask the President to "Protect and Reject."
Starting today, a group of ranchers, farmers and indigenous leaders known as the Cowboy and Indian Alliance are hosting a weeklong encampment on the National Mall. The group promises a week's worth of "Reject and Protect" actions against the Keystone XL pipeline.
On Saturday, over 5,000 people are expected to join the Cowboy Indian Alliance for a ceremonial walk by the Capitol. The "Protect and Reject" week will culminate when the Alliance delivers a tipi, painted by the week's participants, to the Museum of the American Indian in honor of President Obama.
The Cowboy Indian Alliance is the same group responsible for the recently unveiled, world's largest crop art installation in a field near Neligh, Nebraska.

- We've heard debates between U.S. Senate candidates and gubernatorial candidates, but tonight the people of Grand Island will get the chance to hear the three mayoral candidates face off.
Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek has experienced a term filled with tension and controversy, including a suspected DUI and two attempts to recall him from office. But despite it all... he's running for another term.
Tonight all three mayoral candidates; including Mayor Jay Vavricek, Council Member Chuck Haase, and Grand Island Senior High soccer coach and financial planner Jeremy Jensen; will be right at Walnut Middle School.
Councilmember Chuck Haase has been openly critical about Mayor Vavricek's term in office. News 5 spoke with him back in January at his campaign announcement. Haase said one of his priorities is to replace City Administrator Mary Lou Brown.
And Jensen, who is new to politics, says his financial background will help him in city offi...

While you've known her for the past few years for her weekly segment "What's Going Around," Ginger has been reporting on news of all kinds in Central Nebraska since December of 2000.
Ginger's award winning journalism caught the attention of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association as well as the Associated Press.
And even though the former Miss Rodeo Nebraska hails from the Cornhusker State... one of her many claims to fame comes from her time in Nashville, and the contacts she made while recording in Music City.
But just because she picked up a camera and microphone, doesn't mean Ginger stopped singing. So when then-President George W. Bush made a stop in Grand Island... there was only ...

The mysterious disease is causing pork prices to skyrocket across the country. In February a pound of bacon averaged 5 dollars and 46 cents. Up 13 percent from last year, now perhaps even higher.
"There's maybe a 20-30% price appreciation," said Mark McHargue, Owner of Big Valley Pork.
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea or the PED Virus is believed to have originated in China. It has killed an estimated 5 million piglets since it hit the United States in May of 2013.
The PED virus causes diarrhea in pigs. A symptom that's uncomfortable for adults, but can be deadly for piglets.

"Very often offenders will talk to kids and make them think they're going to get in trouble, or they've been going along with this so now it's their fault. So parents need to talk to kids about how someone might trick them into going along with it or not telling."
The seminar was developed through advice from child molesters on how they felt they were able to get away with abuse. Experts say it's important to talk with kids several times a year about sexual abuse... an...

- Veterans will now receive in-state tuition rates under a bill passed by the Legislature that was signed into law. Under LB 740, introduced by Bellevue Senator Sue Crawford, veterans who have separated from a branch of the Armed Forces of the United States within the past two years are eligible for in-state tuition. It also applies to their family and children.
The bill started at Central Community College in Grand Island. In fact, they've had the policy at the school for the last two years. Travis Karr, the Veteran Student Coordinator says service members typically move from base to base so their residency changes. But this bill will encourage vets to move to the Cornhusker state.
Karr says their program has helped 12 out of state veterans not pay the added expense on their tuition. In November, CCC ranked first by the Military Times as Best for Vets among two year colleges.
