Police say the measures are aimed at protecting lives and preventing criminals from exploiting the celebrations. Authorities also say security forces are fully prepared to ensure a safe and peaceful Independence Day across the country.

Yakani says the reported clashes in Walgak and Panyikang raise concerns over growing tensions between government forces and the SPLA-IO, despite the 2018 peace agreement.

Parliament has approved and ratified amendments to the Revitalized Peace Agreement, allowing South Sudan to move toward elections without first completing the permanent constitution-making process and the national population census.
The amendments were passed during a joint sitting of the National Legislature on Wednesday. Under the new arrangement, the next elected government will be responsible for finalizing the permanent constitution and conducting the national population census.
