- The European Union has expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to make changes to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, saying the required due process was not respected.
EU Deputy Head of Mission Lothar Jaschke has said bypassing the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) amounted to a disregard for the peace agreement, stressing that “RJMEC cannot be bypassed.”
Jaschke also raised concerns over the decision to defer the adoption of a permanent constitution until after the elections, warning that it could create legal uncertainty around the electoral process.
“We are in a legal limbo. There will always be doubts hanging over the elections,” he said.
