Members of the Children’s Parliament are calling for people who litter to be fined 200,000 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), as littering continues to be a concern in Juba and other towns, with plastic bottles and soft drink containers often thrown on streets and in public spaces instead of designated bins.
Speaking during the seventh episode of the Child Rights Forum program on Eye Radio, Child Parliamentarian Desmond Kennedy suggested the fine to discourage littering and encourage proper waste disposal
Do you think people who litter should be fined, and what do you think can be done to keep our streets and public spaces clean?

We begin with rule of law and justice. The Joint Special Emergency Court has sentenced Customs Police Captain Richard Ruai Kuol to six months in prison and fined him five million South Sudanese pounds after convicting him of assaulting a civilian in Juba.
The court found that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The prosecution has welcomed the verdict, saying it sends a strong message that security personnel can be held accountable, while the defense says it will not appeal the decision. Following the verdict, court officials also reaffirmed that no one is above the law.
Question
Do you think the conviction of a police officer by a special court can help strengthen public confidence in the rule of law and accountability in South Sudan? Share your views with us constructively.

Police spokesperson Major General Daniel Justin spoke to Eye Radio’s Obaj Okuj Shaqawa in a phone interview.
