A strong cold front will drag cold air from Antarctica, bringing showers, hail, thunder and widespread snow to low levels across many parts of southeastern Australia. The system will impact Tasmania from tonight, with snow levels dropping down to 400 m, before sweeping across Victoria and NSW on Friday.
Snow levels are expected to fall to 600 m in Victoria and southern parts of NSW, and down to around 1000 m in northern parts of NSW. Alpine areas will see blizzard-like conditions at times, with 50 to 100 cm of snow expected by Sunday night.
