- A new weather radar in Hillston is now operational, bringing more reliable and up-to-date weather information to farmers, emergency services and the wider communities of western New South Wales.
The benefits include:
tracking of the location and strength of wind changes using Doppler technology
improved rain image quality
improved severe storm prediction by detecting weather systems such as tornadoes and intense rain during storms that can cause damage
enhanced information for emergency services with better fire plume height estimation and detection of fire-generated thunderstorms
increased accuracy and reliability of the radar.
The new Hillston radar is a result of a $24.5 million investment from the NSW Government to construct three Doppler radars in partnership with the Bureau of Meteorology and remove the weather radar ‘blackspot’ covering regional New South Wales.

- Wild weather continues across much of southeast Australia with heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding, damaging wind, and snow to low levels.
Damaging wind warnings are current across much of Victoria, including the Melbourne area and northeast Tasmania for south to southeasterly winds gusting up to 120km/h about elevated areas.
There is also a Warning current for expected heavy rain with the potential for flooding across west Gipplsland and the Central highlands, including surrounding areas of Melbourne of the Yarra Ranges and about the Daylesford area.
This cold snap is dropping temperatures across NSW and Qld 6-10 degrees below average, and even, with a chance of snow as far north as the Granite belt of Qld later this afternoon or evening and around the Canberra and Goulburn area tonight.

Severe thunderstorms are forecast to bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding from the early hours of Tuesday morning, peaking during Tuesday afternoon.
Storms are possible along much of the east coast and adjacent land areas north of Wollongong, as well as parts of central and southern NSW, however severe storms will be most likely north of Kempsey extending into southeast Qld.
Storms and convection are expected to continue into Wednesday and Thursday, however they're less likely to be severe.

This radar is one of 3 new radars in western NSW being built by the Bureau and funded by the NSW Government. It is also part of the Bureau of Meteorology's program to deliver the most significant uplift to Australia's radar and observation network in a generation.

Damaging winds are forecast for Alpine areas of Victoria on Tuesday with a wintry week ahead as a series of cold fronts sweep across the south bringing snow to Alpine areas of Victoria and down to 700m in Tasmania. Dangerous surf is also forecast to develop for parts of South Australia, western Victoria and western Tasmania.
