Classical music legends like Beethoven and Paganini are returning to the stage through Korean original musicals. Rather than being portrayed as distant figures from history books, they are being reimagined as artists struggling with passion, ambition, and personal conflict. Today, we'll explore how these iconic musicians are being brought back to life on stage with culture critic Professor Chie Hye-won at Kyung Hee University. Welcome back, Professor Chie!
Q1. Recently, we've seen a growing number of Korean original musicals based on real-life musicians and composers.
What are some notable examples?
Q2. Let's go into the details and start with Beethoven, which opened on June 9. The production has attracted considerable attention because two of Korea's most prominent musical actors, Park Hyo-shin (also well-known as a ballad singer) and Hong Kwang-ho, are sharing the title role....

When a night out in Korea ends with a car in the parking lot and drinks at the table, a quiet, highly efficient system steps in to get you home safely.
Korea’s nights are anything but quiet. It’s a culture built around food, drinks, and long social evenings that often end with one more round over dinner. But if you drove there—and had a drink—what then?
In Korea, even after drinking, there’s a simple solution: someone comes, gets behind the wheel of your car, and drives you home safely. It’s not self-driving tech. It’s something older—and far more human.
It’s called designated driving. Open an app, enter your destination, and a driver is on the way to take over your car.
The service isn’t unique to Korea. But few countries have integrated it so deeply into daily life. Then why has it taken such a strong root in Korea in particular? The answer lies in Korean society itself.
Nightlife built around work ...

An artist who first picked up a paintbrush at the age of 85 is now holding her first solo exhibition.
Through her paintings, she offers a powerful reminder that it is never too late to begin something new.
Kim Suh-young has the story.
These vibrant works, capturing the natural beauty of Jeju, were painted by 87-year-old artist Jwa Gi-chun.
Her canvases are filled with the landscapes of the island, the sea, wildflowers, and mountains.
Having spent her whole life in rhythm with nature, she seems to have a connection with the land through every brushstroke.
"When I paint, I feel as if I'm in the painting. I keep thinking about how nature grows the trees, the stones, and the life within them."
She spent most of her life farming.
It was only two years ago that she began to paint, encouraged by her family.

Seoul and Washington have reaffirmed their shared goal of the denuclearization of North Korea during their latest Nuclear Consultative Group, or NCG, meeting held in Seoul.
Following the sixth round of NCG talks on Thursday, the two sides released a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to the denuclearization of North Korea, marking the first time such language has been included in an NCG statement.
The statement also said the allies would strengthen extended deterrence through the continued development of the NCG in response to the North's advancing nuclear and missile capabilities.
The move has drawn attention as China made no mention of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during a summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang earlier this week.

Young farmers are keeping Korea's rural communities alive.
One of them is a young woman now running her family's third-generation dairy farm.
Kim Suh-young tells us more.
Four in the morning.
That is when 33-year-old dairy farmer Kwak Jin-young begins her day.
"When I get up at four in the morning, I check whether the cows were okay overnight, and whether there were any alerts. Then I get ready for the milking."
The dairy farm is named after her grandmother.
She began working on the farm full-time eight years ago, following in her father's footsteps.
But this isn't just any farm.
Each cow wears a chip around its neck or ear, which works as an ID card.
It is part of an ICT-based system that helps monitor a cow's health, including how much they have eaten and how much milk they are likely to produce.

Back to today's while it won't be excessively hot and with an ideal humidity, you'll still want to bring a hat or umbrella to protect yourself from the strong sunshine and high UV levels.
And this afternoon, Seoul and Chuncheon will get up to 28 degrees, Daegu and Gyeongju will be hotter at 30 degrees Celsius, with normal air quality nationwide. Meanwhile, most regions will stay dry, but inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon-do Province could see a brief afternoon shower.
Sunny skies will continue through the weekend with a chance of passing rain on Sunday. Next week looks hotter with temperatures staying in the low thirties.

The move comes after a year of rate cuts and reflects growing concern over rising energy costs and inflation pressures triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.
The ECB is the first G7 central bank to raise rates since the latest surge in global prices began.

British Defence Minister John Healey resigned Thursday, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of failing to commit the resources needed to keep the country safe, dealing another blow to a leader already facing calls to step down. Healey said the proposed defence spending plan "fell well short" of what was needed against rising threats from Russia and demands for a greater military presence in the Arctic and the Middle East. A junior defence minister also quit on the same day. Starmer appointed security minister Dan Jarvis as Healey’s replacement. The resignation comes less than a month before a NATO summit.

Korea's national soccer team will kick off its first World Cup match shortly, and for those planning to join outdoor cheering events, the weather should be nice under sunny skies. But since we are getting into mid-June, the weather pattern will be changing with southwesterly winds pushing temperatures higher.
Back to today's weather, while it won't be excessively hot and with ideal humidity, you'll still want to bring a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sunshine and high UV levels.
And this afternoon, Seoul and Chuncheon will get up to 28 degrees, and Gwangju will top out at 29 degrees. Daegu hotter at 30 degrees Celsius. Air quality will be normal in most parts of Korea.
Sunny skies will continue through the weekend with a chance of passing rain on Sunday. Next week looks hotter with temperatures staying in the low thirties.
