- With the November election approaching, Gov. Greg Abbott fielded questions in Amarillo about his record and the issues Texas voters are watching as he seeks a fourth term.
Asked about affordability and the rising costs Texans face, Abbott outlined proposals focused on property taxes.
“What I'm proposing to do is to, for one, require a vote on every property tax increase and require a two-thirds vote margin for it to go into effect,” Abbott said. He also called for limiting appraisal increases, saying his plan “requires a reduction of the appraisal, which now is 10% a year, and reduce that to no more than 3% a year.” Abbott added that his proposal “would eliminate using your homestead to pay for public schools.”
Abbott also addressed data centers, an issue with a growing footprint across the Texas Panhandle.
“I'll put a moratorium on data centers moving forward. And on any new data centers,” Abbott said. He said the s...

- With the November midterms approaching, Senate Democrats have blocked Republican-backed legislation aimed at restricting lawmaker stock trading and establishing a national voter ID policy, keeping two politically charged issues at the center of debate on Capitol Hill.
'The Stop Insider Trading Act' failed to advance this week after every Senate Democrat voted no. The bill was sponsored by Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., who told CNBC in July, “This is common sense legislation to take a strong stand to prevent people from buying new stock once they get here."

Paxton, the Republican candidate for Senate, told the crowd he wants voters to judge him by his record.
“I am not asking you to imagine what I'd be like as a senator. I'm asking you to look at my record. I'm running America, not just rhetoric like my opponent. That's the key difference in this race,” Paxton said.
Paxton spoke at the Hodgetown rally Thursday night, focusing on the cost of living, health care and energy.
“My agenda is simple. I'm going to fight so that every Texan can buy a home, raise a family, and live a healthy life without struggling to make ends meet,” he said.
He pointed voters to his “Protecting the Texas Promise” agenda, which includes tax deductions aimed at housing and health care costs.

According to the International Monetary Fund, global debt was on track to reach World War II-era levels by 2028 before the Iran war. That record was broken early.
"The conflict is adding to fiscal pressures by causing a spike in energy prices, tightening financial conditions, and slowing growth, and it is unclear how long these pressures will endure," the IMF said in its annual report out this week, which described the world's fiscal picture as "highly worrisome."

The Canadian River flows 190 miles across the Texas Panhandle.

The meeting comes as the U.S.-China relationship remains strained over tariffs, technology restrictions and security issues, while the war with Iran has added another geopolitical complication.
The U.S. Treasury Department said in April that China purchases approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports, with independent Chinese refineries accounting for most of those imports. (TNND)

Speaking from the Senate floor Tuesday, Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said if the White House had asked for his input, he'd have told the Trump administration he thought it was a mistake to host Xi in Washington.
"But Mr. President, during every minute of dialogue, our commander in chief should keep in mind that his guest is a brutal, unelected, and oppressive dictator who seeks to dominate his neighbors and whose massive military arsenal is aimed directly at the United States of America," Wicker said.

Among the 16 people recently arrested for illegal voting or other election-related crimes, nine were from the state of Texas.
Mexican national Monica Carzoli, 46, a lawful permanent resident, admitted to registering to vote and then voting in the November 2024 election. Carzoli was arrested on criminal charges this week in Del Rio, Texas.
During a September 15 news conference, Ryan Raybould, a U.S. Attorney with the Northern District of Texas, said, "Anyone who is not a citizen and chooses to cast a ballot or claimed citizenship falsely is breaking the law. We cannot and will not allow that to stand."
