- A copilot stabbed a captain in an apparent attempt to crash a jetliner as it was flying 174 people to Israel on Wednesday. But passengers burst into the cockpit and wrestled with the attacker even as the plane descended sharply, witnesses and Israel’s government said.
The plane made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The shaken passengers from the FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv landed Wednesday evening in Israel on another flight, as onlookers cheered. Israel’s emergency services said they treated three passengers with minor injuries.
It was not clear what motivated the attack, which led Israel to scramble warplanes amid concerns about a possible hijacking. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saudi Arabia arrested the copilot, who was not identified.
Aviation experts were surprised the plane did not crash after a descent so extreme that most of the rudder was ripped off the tail.

- A spike in stolen vehicles and car break-ins in August prompted the Brighton Police Department to increase overnight patrols.
Police reported 20 vehicles were stolen in the town last month, a sharp increase from earlier in the summer, according to Sgt. Rebecca Halpin.
"May through July, single digits — one vehicle stolen in May, four or five maybe in July," Halpin said. "And then we came to August, and we had 20 stolen vehicles."
According to Brighton's Crime Watch database, many of the vehicles stolen or broken into in August and September were either unlocked and/or had keys left inside. In a few cases, vehicles were left with door handles ripped off.
Halpin said the recent cases do not appear to be tied to a single pattern.

Police said the victim, a man in his 60s, was found on Genesee Street around 11:30 p.m. with several stab wounds.
According to police, the man told officers he saw the suspect, 48-year-old Cordell Lanier, yelling at an unknown female. Court documents said that when the victim told Lanier to leave the girl alone, a fight ensued, and he was stabbed multiple times in the back.
Lanier fled the scene on a bike, but officers located him shortly after and took him into custody near Stratford Park. Police said the victim was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
