- When Varun Venkatesh cast his ballot in New York’s primary this week, he thought about “a good litmus test for me as a voter.” He wanted to know what the candidates are doing for the Palestinian cause.
The 27-year-old Brooklyn resident decided to support Claire Valdez, who was backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, over Antonio Reynoso, another progressive who was the choice of the Democratic establishment, because she had “a clear and more consistent stance.”
Valdez triumphed in her congressional primary, as did two other insurgent candidates endorsed by Mamdani, and Israel was a key issue in each of the races. Now the question for Democrats is how many more voters like Venkatesh are out there as the party charts its path toward the November midterms and the next presidential election.
The war in Gaza began with Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which responded with a yearslong counterattack that left more than 73,000 dead. About 1,000 ...

“In a normal business model, if 70% of routes are losing money, you would adjust the routes. In a normal business model, if 60% of the stores you have are losing money, you’d close them. We’re not allowed to do either," said David Steiner, U.S. postmaster general, during his opening statements at a hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

- President Donald Trump berated Senate Republicans during a visit to the Capitol Wednesday for allowing a vote to block his war in Iran, further escalating a feud that has diverted GOP efforts to focus on election-year affordability issues and brought much of the chamber’s business to a halt.
Invited to speak at the GOP luncheon by Florida Sen. Rick Scott, Trump had signaled ahead of time that he would use the closed-door meeting to push senators to pass his proof-of-citizenship voting bill. But the conversation was more focused on Tuesday’s vote to approve the war powers resolution, a mostly symbolic measure that allows Congress to rebuke the administration’s military actions. The House passed its own version of the resolution earlier this month.
Trump had particular words for the four Republican senators who voted with Democrats on the measure — Republicans Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Lou...

Two incumbents lost to candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic socialist movement that propelled him to victory. Mamdani also backed a candidate who won the primary for an open House seat in the city, making him 3 for 3 with the candidates he endorsed.

The president is not pleased with the Republicans who have been critical of the deal he struck with Iran, according to one GOP senator granted anonymity to discuss the private dynamics.
The terms of the Iran deal are spelled out in a memorandum of understanding that Trump signed last week, starting a 60-day clock for the sides to reach a broader agreement over ending Iran's nuclear program.
But Republicans have particularly objected to the $300 billion fund to help Iran rebuild, which is far greater than the $1.7 billion then-President Barack Obama refunded the country under his administration's 2015 Iran deal.

It was the 10th time the Senate has tried to stop the war, and the outcome, on a vote of 50-48, was a stunning turnaround from past efforts. While the resolution is largely symbolic, and does not carry the full force of law, it reflects the growing concerns from a number of Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate over both the war and the deal Trump struck with Iran to end it. The House approved the resolution earlier this month.
Trump responded angrily Tuesday night on his Truth Social platform, calling the vote “poorly timed and meaningless” and saying it “provided aid and comfort” to Iran.

- A Mississippi family whose 1-year-old child was killed when police fired into a moving vehicle said Monday they want authorities to release video showing whether officers were in danger of being struck when one of them opened fire.
The shooting has sparked outrage in the small city of Senatobia, where some say it’s the latest in a series of troubling encounters between police and Black residents.
Kohen Wiley was riding with his mother and another woman in a Walmart parking lot on June 14 when police responded to a shoplifting call. The family says they were driving away, while the officers say the car was heading toward them.
“I watched my baby take his first breath, and I watched my baby take his last breath,” Vellesiya Wiley said at a news conference Monday.
The other woman in the car, whose name has not been released, suffered “critical injuries,” according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the...

- Vice President JD Vance on Monday said his lengthy talks with senior Iranian officials in Switzerland created a “good foundation for a successful final deal” as they seek a permanent end to the war that the U.S. and Israel began in late February.
Vance and U.S. officials claimed progress on multiple fronts, including the establishment of “mechanisms” to ensure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy shipments, stays open and to address fighting between Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon, where a ceasefire appeared to be holding.
The interim deal to end the fighting in Iran, signed last week by the leaders of the U.S. and Iran, sets a 60-day period for negotiations on key issues, including the future of Tehran’s nuclear program amid concerns that Iran wants to use it for military purposes, a claim the country denies.

- A ransom note related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, said the 84-year-old had died, CNN and other news organizations are reporting, citing law enforcement sources.
Some media outlets had previously reported receiving ransom notes tied to the case in the days after Guthrie’s disappearance in early February from her home just outside Tucson.
CNN reported Monday that one of notes revealed that Nancy Guthrie was dead — and those who kidnapped her did not mean to kill her, but she died shortly after her disappearance. CNN said it knew the contents of one such note, and that a Tucson TV station had received two notes.
CNN and the station agreed to hold off on sharing the contents of the notes publicly so any future communications with the kidnapper or kidnappers could be authenticated, CNN reported.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the note’s co...

- Friday was Kameron Nelson's first day on the job working as a cook at The Mafia Hub, a Buffalo Bills-themed bar on St. Paul Street downtown.
He ended up being fatally stabbed early Saturday morning outside the bar after his shift ended.
"He was just a very genuine, kind, caring, (person)," said Jonathan Quinones-Palermo, the bar's vice president. "Just a good guy."
Police said Alexavier Colon, 23, was involved in an argument with his girlfriend inside the bar. When they left the bar, it escalated into a fight.
"Nothing about (Colon) gave off alarm bells," Quinones-Palermo said. "We have a contracted security. They check people coming in."
Nelson, 33, saw the fight and attempted to help the woman, according to police, but Colon stabbed him multiple times. Nelson died from his injuries after being hospitalized.
"He instinctively stepped in and lost his life," Quinones-Palermo said. "Without any hesitation, he s...

- Twins Noah and Parker Hickman surprised their parents, Danielle and Matthew, by arriving five weeks early.
"Wednesday morning, my water broke at 9:15 at home," Danielle said. "Just was pretty uncomfortable at home, lower back pain, cramping. Told (Matthew) to come home from work to get everything ready. We packed our bags quickly."
Danielle said it takes about 30-35 minutes to get to Highland Hospital from their home in Macedon.
The plan was to have a C-section. But on the way to the hospital, those plans changed.
"Contractions got closer and closer as we got farther and farther away from home," Danielle said. "And about a quarter to halfway to the hospital, contractions were about every one to two minutes apart."
That's when they pulled over on Route 31 in Perinton and called 911.
"I have no medical background at all," Matthew said. "I had no clue what I was doing, (but) I guess I didn't really feel anxious ...

- A woman charged in connection with her 16-year-old son's death reached a guilty plea Monday.
Aneka Connor, 38, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child for the death of Ca'hry Gibson.
The two were involved in an argument Oct. 10 over Gibson's phone. Connor left her house on Breck Street, got into her car and began backing out of the driveway when Gibson ran out of the house and jumped onto the vehicle, according to authorities. Connor accelerated the vehicle at a high rate of speed, causing Gibson him to fall off onto the pavement.
Gibson was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he was placed on life support. He died Nov. 7. Connor was arrested Dec. 30.
Monday's plea includes a sentence of 1-3 years in prison. Connor's attorney declined to comment.
Gibson's father said the sentence is too small, compared to the life that was lost.

- Allegations of improper conduct at an early voting location have emerged in a Democratic race for a committee seat in New York's 137th Assembly District.
Monroe County Legislature Vice President Mercedes Vazquez Simmons is accusing fellow Democratic county legislator and opponent Rose Bonnick of electioneering after an incident at the Staybridge Suites site during the final weekend of early voting.
Vazquez Simmons said poll watchers she hired witnessed Bonnick bringing voters into voting sites and assisting them while casting ballots. Vazquez Simmons said she subsequently contacted the Monroe County Board of Elections to raise concerns about the interactions.
"There's many issues to that," Vazquez Simmons said. "I don't think any elected officials should ever put themselves in that situation, in that compromising situation, and more so if you're on the ballot, or your boss is on the ballot."

- Vice President JD Vance left Switzerland after expressing optimism that the United States and Iran have laid the groundwork for a final peace deal following a first round of new talks.
Vance said Iran agreed to allow international nuclear inspectors back into the country, calling it a significant step toward ending Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions.
“The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country. That is a major milestone for the American people and the first step in permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran, and that's exactly what we wanted to do. That's exactly what we asked to happen,” Vance said.
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that “Everybody is fully aware that Iran will agree to have Major Weapons Inspections in order to ensure ‘Nuclear Honesty’ long into the future,” but Iran had not confirmed that inspectors would be allowed into the country t...

Hearn, 67, donated to Democratic fundraising apparatus ActBlue 10 times while also contributing to Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns five times, an administration official told Fox News Digital.
Hearn was charged with a misdemeanor for destruction of government property Saturday after he reached into the water and allegedly grabbed a hose being used by a National Park Service worker, Fox News previously reported. The Reflecting Pool was drained and painted under President Donald Trump’s direction, sparking scrutiny over peeling paint and algae growth.

- President Donald Trump is renewing his call for Senate Republicans to rewrite the rules as he pushes an increasingly difficult congressional agenda.
He demanded in a Thursday Truth Social post that Majority Leader John Thune scrap the filibuster, which blocks most bills that are short of 60 votes, in favor of a simple-majority system. Trump’s failing effort to pass a voter ID bill has become even more challenging in the past few days, as he urges it attached to a foreign surveillance law being negotiated by the Senate.
“The Republican Party isn’t at stake, our Country is,” the president wrote. “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, AND IMMEDIATELY APPROVE THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.”
Thune has repeatedly rejected Trump’s demands to take the so-called nuclear option, which lacks Republican support.
“He’s passionate about it, and we are doing everything that we can, but it is a function of math,” the senator told Fox News on Tuesday. ...

De la Espriella, a conservative lawyer and dual citizen of the U.S. and Colombia, campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform and has promised to build 10 mega-prisons in the South American Country, inspired by the security policies of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, amid rising violence in the country.
De la Espriella was endorsed by President Donald Trump earlier this month.

- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday he will resign, forced out by his own party after missteps and mistakes soured voters’ goodwill following a landslide election victory two years ago on a promise of steady leadership and economic growth.
Starmer says he will remain caretaker prime minister until his Labour Party chooses a new leader — with expectations growing that it will be former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
Burnham confirmed on social media that “I will put myself forward as part of this process.” Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who was considered his main rival for the top job, said he will back Burnham.
It was Burnham’s victory in a special parliamentary election last week that triggered Starmer’s decision to resign, as Labour lawmakers flocked to the charismatic former mayor in the hope he can revive the party’s fortunes. After nearly a decade as mayor of the northwestern city, Burnham returned M...

Iran effectively closed the strait after the U.S. and Israel attacked on Feb. 28, causing fuel prices to skyrocket far beyond the region. The talks, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, began Sunday and stretched into the early hours of Monday. While the high-level discussions have concluded, technical negotiations are expected to continue in Switzerland this week.
Vance said the talks did not produce a final peace agreement but did establish diplomatic, security and nuclear-monitoring frameworks needed to pursue a broader and more permanent regional settlement.
