- Five British men arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses near a military base used by U.S. forces have been released on bail as authorities continue investigating what they initially feared could be a plot targeting the base.
The men, all in their 20s, were arrested Sunday near Royal Air Force Fairford in Gloucestershire after police received a report of three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the base. They were initially detained on suspicion of offenses under Britain's Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
British counterterrorism officials announced Monday that the men would be released on police bail following extensive interviews and inquiries.
Authorities stressed that their release does not end the investigation. The men remain under investigation and face restrictions on their movements and contact with others while the inquiry continues.

- Rescuers searching through the rubble of a two-story house that collapsed after an explosion in Athens ’ historic Plaka district recovered six bodies on Saturday, authorities said.
Documents and belongings found with four of the victims — two men and two women — indicated they were U.S. citizens, according to Greek state broadcaster ERT and other local media reports.
The blast on Friday was believed to have been caused by a major gas leak, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said. Neighboring buildings were damaged and evacuated, he added.
Plaka lies at the foot of the Acropolis, Greece’s most visited ancient monument.
Two women were injured in an adjacent building on Lysikratous Street, the fire department said. The search-and-rescue operation involved 30 firefighters and three dogs, and an investigation into the explosion was underway.

- Mediators are still working with Iran and the United States on brokering a deal to end the fighting and open the Strait of Hormuz — even after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly rejected Iran's latest proposal, three regional officials and a senior U.S. official told The Associated Press.
The indirect talks were expected to resume on Monday and come as the conflict that's caused global economic damage and badly battered Iran enters its eighth month. Multiple efforts to allow safe shipping on one of the world's most crucial waterways have failed.
The officials divulged that the behind-the-scenes efforts continue even after Trump spurned an Iranian proposal to reopen the strait in a week if the U.S. agreed to lift its blockade of Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian assets and waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, among other conditions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, remained in New York after last week's gathering of world ...

- SpaceX launched its enormous Starship into orbit for the first time Monday and successfully delivered the most advanced Starlinks yet, but cut the flight short to ensure safety.
The spacecraft reentered over the Pacific and splashed down north of Hawaii three hours after blasting off from Texas. The company had been aiming for a 10-hour flight, spanning six full laps around Earth, to prove its readiness for NASA’s Artemis moon program.
Starship tipped over and erupted in flames upon splashdown, a dramatic end to the mission.
Founder Elon Musk's Starship almost didn't make it to orbit when one of its engines shut down too soon. But with everything else working well and the bad engine no longer needed, flight controllers decided after several tense minutes to proceed as planned.

The men were detained early Sunday after three vans were spotted in the countryside near RAF Fairford, a U.K.-owned base that has been used by American bombers during decades of conflicts in the Middle East.
Investigators haven't concluded whether the incident was state-backed. They are investigating a possible link to Iran, Russia or non-state militant groups. RAF Fairford has also been the focus of protests by anti-war campaigners.
The five suspects, who haven't been named, were initially held over suspected explosives offenses, and later also arrested on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. Police said the men are all British nationals from London and in their 20s.

- Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a priest known for his frequent TV appearances, and who led the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester later in his life, was beatified Thursday at a ceremony in St. Louis.
Sheen was a pioneering radio priest who quickly adopted the new medium of television in the 1950s, when he began hosting the program "Life is Worth Living."
"He had this sort of mesmerizing way of speaking," said Very. Rev. Father Peter Van Lieshout from Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. "He had this really gentle smile, and he was he was kind of like a professor."
"You see, actually, the intelligence of the discourse at the time," Van Lieshout added. "This was not watered down."
Van Lieshout said it wasn't until Sheen was in his 70s in 1966 that he was appointed — rather unexpectedly — as bishop of Rochester, a position he held until 1969.

- Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his state visit to Washington on Friday by announcing that he expects to meet President Donald Trump two more times before the end of the year, doubling the number of face-to-face discussions between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies in 2026.
Trump on Friday took Xi to visit the National Archives, showing off the sacred texts of U.S. democracy to the leader of the world’s most powerful communist country.
Trump, a Republican, has been seeking to demonize Democrats as communists during the run-up to the November midterm elections, a message that has been muddied by the red-carpet treatment he has given Xi this week.

The address comes at a moment when Israel's standing on the world stage has grown increasingly fractured. Recent polling shows growing skepticism toward Netanyahu and Israel's conduct in its war with Hamas, as well as its role in the broader conflict with Iran. A Pew Research poll conducted over the summer found that 62% of Americans held an unfavorable view of the Israeli government. Crowds of protesters gathered outside the UN in the days leading up to Netanyahu's speech, underscoring the tension surrounding his visit.
Despite the friction, Netanyahu used his remarks to praise Israel's partnership with the United States and President Donald Trump, defend the ongoing war with Iran, and take direct aim at critics, including New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. ...

While Trump has many thorny issues to discuss with the president of America’s biggest economic rival, he focused on his long relationship with Xi as the two gathered with aides for opening remarks before formal talks.

Three tourists engaged in a beach-side photo op on Lost Boy Beach just north of Oceanside had become trapped by a fast-rising ocean tide last week.
One of the tourists used a satellite device to call 911.
Netarts-Oceanside Fire District Chief Jeff McBrayer said his agency sent its drone skyward and in minutes the trapped tourists, all in their 20s, had been located.
The arriving rescue team found the tourists had spelled out SOS on the beach using some driftwood.
The isolated beach and pounding surf made for a dangerous rescue, as falling temperatures and gusting winds raised fears of hypothermia.
“That team made their way to a rock face, and we had to wait a little while, about 40 minutes, for the wave action to recede, because we were having large waves that afternoon,” McBrayer said. “Once our team was able to safely make it around the rock face, we tethered those folks wit...

Some of the organizations involved are part of a broader activist network that has received financial support connected to Neville Roy Singham, an American businessman who lives in Shanghai and has funded progressive organizations including CodePink and the People's Forum.
The protests come as Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the United States for meetings with President Donald Trump. Xi's state visit runs from Sept. 23-25.
Republican lawmakers are raising questions about the network's funding and whether its activism could advance China's interests in the United States.

- Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington Wednesday for a high-profile state visit as the United States and China navigate tensions over trade, technology, Taiwan and global security.
President Donald Trump took the unusual step of personally greeting Xi at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, rather than waiting to receive the Chinese leader at the White House. Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, as they stepped off their plane.
The visit marks Xi's first state visit to the U.S. capital in more than a decade and comes after Trump visited China earlier this year.
Trump and Xi are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and geopolitical tensions. The two countries have also been working to maintain a fragile trade truce.
Xi's arrival is being met with scrutiny on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers from both parties have raised concerns about China...

- Americans already feeling the pinch from higher everyday costs could face another financial hurdle as borrowing becomes more expensive.
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate last week for the first time since 2023, increasing its target range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75%-4%. The effects can filter through to borrowing costs for consumers, including mortgages, auto loans and credit cards.
Financial adviser Jesse Cramer of Rialto Wealth said consumers shouldn't count on rates quickly returning to the lows seen earlier this decade.
"The challenge is that someone could have easily sat here a year or two ago and said, 'Man, interest rates are kind of high,'" Cramer said. "I'm just gonna wait for the interest rates to return back to where they were in 2020, 2021. ... And yet where did we end up? Now we're even higher."
Cramer said trying to time major purchases around future interest rate moves can be difficult.

- A federal court filing is revealing new details about a third person of interest who surfaced during the trial of two brothers convicted of killing a couple and their two young children inside their Irondequoit home.
Federal prosecutors allege Alberto Pomales stole two kilograms of cocaine from a drug-trafficking organization, setting in motion the events that led to the family's killings. They claim Pomales later remained outside the Knapp Avenue home as the murders unfolded but never called 911.
Julio Cesar Pimentel-Soriano and Luis Francisco Soriano were convicted Tuesday in the August 2024 murders of Fraime Ubaldo, his girlfriend, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, and their children, 4-year-old Evangeline and 2-year-old Sebastian.
During their trial, an Irondequoit police sergeant testified that phone records from Ubaldo and Moreno-Santiago led investigators to a third person of interest. Defense attorneys alleged Moreno-Santiago was having an affair...

- President Donald Trump is pushing for expanded cooperation against drug cartels and other criminal organizations across the Western Hemisphere, calling on U.S. allies to impose sanctions and other restrictions on 24 groups.
Trump met Tuesday with leaders and foreign ministers from the Shield of the Americas, an anti-cartel coalition launched by his administration earlier this year. It was the group's second meeting and took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump called on participating countries to formally recognize what he described as "narco-terrorists" as a common threat to regional stability and take action against 24 organizations already targeted by the United States.
"For years, cartels have waged war on the people of this hemisphere. Now we're waging war on them," Trump said during the meeting.
The participating governments later issued a joint statement outlining plans to pursue meas...

- A federal judge heard arguments Wednesday in a legal battle over President Donald Trump's decision to ban three major news organizations from White House grounds.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico sued the Trump administration Monday after their journalists' White House access was revoked. The outlets argue the decision violates their First Amendment rights and amounts to retaliation over their coverage.
The Trump administration has defended the move, arguing White House access is a privilege rather than a right and accusing the outlets of failing to meet standards of professionalism and decorum. Administration officials have also raised national security concerns about some of their reporting.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly did not immediately rule Wednesday on the outlets' request to restore their access. During the hearing, Kelly questioned whether the administration followed legal precedent requiring notice and an opportunity to respond before White...

- Waterview Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte is supposed to close by the end of the week, but more than 50 residents are still living there, according to Lifespan.
The troubled nursing home is supposed to shut its doors for good after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services stripped the facility of its license following numerous failed inspections and allegations of resident abuse and neglect.
More than 160 residents once called the facility home but have been moving out since the closure process began more than a month ago.
Ann Marie Cook, president and CEO of Lifespan, which operates the region's ombudsman program, said plans are still being finalized for some residents.
"There's a plan for about 30, and I think 20 are still waiting for a plan," Cook said. "But I'm going to tell you, I think it would be very difficult in this short time frame for all of those individuals to be placed in appropriate housing...

Schutt said the seasonable — but crispier — weather this summer and into the fall has been a blessing for his crop.
"Cooler weather is what you want," he said. "And that's why we think we grow the best apples is in this region because other parts of the country don't get cool like we do at nights. It helps bring color to the apples. It helps bring flavor to the apples."
The added rainfall has meant Schutt's 20-plus varieties are offering more for pickers.
"It does make things a little bit more juicy, a little bit more water is in the apples," Schutt said. "The size has increased, so I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised when you buy these apples locally. You're going to really enjoy the flavor."

"Allowing biological men to compete in women's sports breaks the promise of Title IX," Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said.
Republican witnesses argued that allowing transgender women and girls to compete in female categories can affect opportunities, awards and scholarships available to other female athletes.
Former professional soccer player Carly Smolak told senators she believes the effects extend beyond competition itself.

The Justice Department also announced charges last week against 16 people in several states for alleged illegal voting, voter registration and related election crimes. The cases include allegations of noncitizens voting in federal elections and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register or vote.
The administration's push comes as federal prosecutors pursue a separate case involving hundreds of mail-in ballots in Utah.

Trade, Taiwan, Iran and the growing competition over artificial intelligence are among the issues expected to shape the meeting.
Economic ties between the world's two largest economies have been strained by tariffs during Trump's second term.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration is considering a potential trade agreement with Beijing that could set most-favored-nation tariff levels for certain noncritical goods.
"On the U.S. side, it would mean selling more agriculture, selling more energy," Bessent said.
U.S. and Chinese officials have been holding talks ahead of the summit as the countries consider extending their current trade truce or pursuing a broader agreement.

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, was back in a federal detention center Tuesday after being treated and released at a hospital for a second time since he was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on Sunday in Austin, according to his attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch.
Austin police on Tuesday released body camera footage showing Garces Perez hunching over in the front seat of his car and grabbing his shoulder and rocking back and forth after the shooting. An officer later cut off Perez's shirt, and a wound can be seen in his upper back.
Garces Perez was making a DoorDash delivery Sunday afternoon when ICE officers in an unmarked truck sideswiped his car twice, Lincoln-Goldfinch has sa...

Sen. Jon Husted from Ohio and Senate candidate Mike Rogers from Michigan are among the Republicans, locked in tight races in key battleground states ahead of the midterm elections, calling for an end to the war, which has caused gas prices to skyrocket.
Trump took the stage at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday and told world leaders he has a choice to make a peace deal or "annihilate" Iran and said agreement likely wouldn't come until after the midterm elections.
Hours after those stunning threats, Trump told reporters that his chief envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met for about three hours with the Iranian officials on the sidelines of the annual gathering. But he offered few details about how the discussions transpired or the substance of the exchange.

- Dolly Parton 's estate accused the country music icon’s nephew of threatening to commit violence and destroy his aunt’s legacy and business empire in court filings that also asked a judge to keep him away from its employees and business dealings.
Court documents filed Tuesday in Nashville offer the first signs of discord in a carefully managed estate process for one of the most beloved personalities in music and beyond.
Bryan Seaver, who owns a company that provided Parton’s security detail and was handpicked by the star to announce her death from cancer last month, did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting comment.
In the temporary restraining order request filed by She’s Alive, the entity that manages and protects Parton’s professional property and business, and other court documents, it claims Seaver sent increasingly threatening messages over the last several weeks. She’s Alive is run by Danny Noz...
