- A man was sentenced Friday to 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of fatally shooting an East High School senior and trying to kill another man last spring.
Authorities said Michael Garcia, then 18, shot Michael Springs, then 36, with an illegally possessed semiautomatic 9mm pistol during a confrontation outside a home on Alphonse Street in Rochester around 1:40 a.m. April 30, 2025. An errant round struck Danyelisse Pabon-Cubero, 17, who was inside the home. She later died from her injuries. Springs survived the shooting. Garcia fled the scene but was apprehended at a home on Main Street in Brockport.
"This was a dispute that stemmed from the defendant's best friend over baby formula with his best friend’s baby mom," Assistant District Attorney Kenisha Flowers said. "So, in my eyes, that was so trivial and just highlights how senseless this all was."

- Hopewell, N.Y. (WHAM) — People convicted of abusing, neglecting or torturing animals in Ontario County will soon be prohibited from owning pets under a new Animal Abuse Registry approved by county leaders.
The Ontario County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Thursday to create the registry, joining Livingston, Allegany and Steuben counties in adopting the measure.
"There was great support to get this into place," said Kurt Koczent, board president of the Ontario County Humane Society.
Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione announced Friday that anyone convicted of qualifying animal cruelty offenses will be barred from owning animals for 15 years and must submit a photograph and personal information for inclusion in the registry.

The complaint also alleges that on June 8, Eckert sent a direct message to Evans’ Facebook political account, used a racial slur to refer to Evans and said the mayor’s life was over.

- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday that he is rolling out a new screening program for “testosterone deficiency” among troops, calling it necessary to allow them to operate at their "absolute best.”
The screenings will be conducted annually as part of service members' required medical screenings for those 30 and older, he said. Troops under 30 can volunteer to be tested. In a video on social media, Hegseth said receiving testosterone replacement therapy would be voluntary.
