- Brighton, N.Y. (WHAM) — In 1792, much of where the Stone-Tolan House on East Avenue now stands was forest.
Enter the Stone family.
"They came from Lenox, Massachusetts, and they bought land because Captain Enos Stone had been a Revolutionary War soldier, and when he came back he had sons that were ready to start a farm and a family," said Lisa McNamara, a tour guide at the house. "Land was very expensive in Massachusetts, this land was much cheaper."
Stone's son Orringh purchased more than 200 acres. Eventually, he met his wife, Elizabeth, and built her the home as a wedding gift.
The home was completed in 1805. The tavern room and kitchen served as a gathering place for many.
Not only was the house a place for people to gather for a drink or travelers to seek shelter, but it also hosted Brighton's first-ever town meeting.
The house is one of the oldest structures in the Rochester area still standing in muc...

- A tightknit community in Wayne County is about to lose its only grocery store.
Bob's Supermarket, also known as Save A Lot, once a staple in the small village of Wolcott, will close its doors for good next week.
Resident Doreen McGarr has shopped there for years.
"I don't know," she said when asked where she would go to shop. "Hopefully Dollar General will keep up their items for us to shop there."
Reliant on a wheelchair and oxygen, McGarr said simply travelling a short distance down the street to the store is already difficult. But she thinks others will have it much worse, particularly those without cars who have walked to the store for years.
"It's going to make it harder for them to survive, to get food for their families," she said. "And senior citizens that can't drive very far, it's going to make it harder on them."
Troy Keaton grew up in Wolcott and says the times have changed.

The fallen limb damaged part of the protective netting above the exhibit, the zoo said.
Tiffany LaDuca was visiting the zoo with family to celebrate her birthday when the event unfolded.
"We were looking at the baboons and it started with a small crack, but it didn't sound like a tree," LaDuca said. "Everyone kind of stopped and then it started to get louder, and I just grabbed the stroller and then my 6-year-old son. Thank God I ran out first and then we were with three other girls and my sister, and we just all ran."
After leaving the hut, LaDuca saw the aftermath.
"We were really, all of us were shaken up," she said.
Caroline McGavisk was also underneath the hut when the limb came crashing down.

"We are kind of learning as we go, " said Gilligan. “We're seeing people are losing weight, losing weight very quickly. We're reducing food noise, so people aren't fixated on food as much.”
Gilligan said the drugs, like Ozempic, Zepbound, Mounajro and others, work to reduce a user’s appetite. Some can go without eating, and in the process, their bodies lack needed hydration and nutrition.
“If you are on a GLP-1 losing weight quickly, there is a need for a little bit more protein," she said adding, "There is a huge protein push right now." Gilligan said protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, which you do not want to lose.

The suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, already was being sought by authorities when he began firing at police and bystanders in Midland on Friday before barricading himself in an abandoned veterinary clinic, where he was eventually found dead, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Police have provided limited details about how the shooting unfolded. Police arrived in the area after receiving reports of an active shooter, and Mata Villarreal started firing at officers, said Midland Police Chief Greg Snow. Several officers were pinned down behind their patrol cars and had to be rescued by an armored vehicle, Snow said, but no officers were shot.
Police then got everyone out of the area. “We moved to deny more targets for ...

"Peace has never been this close as it is now," Sharif wrote in a post on X.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed that optimism, saying an agreement "has never been closer." President Donald Trump later shared Araghchi's post on Truth Social. None of the leaders provided additional details about the reported agreement or the next phase of negotiations.
The apparent diplomatic progress follows a series of conflicting public statements from Trump, who accused Iranian officials of leaking inaccurate details about a potential ceasefire agreement.

In California, the Trump administration has suspended federal funding for a major Los Angeles homelessness program following allegations of financial mismanagement.
The funding freeze targets the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, a key agency responsible for distributing homeless assistance funds throughout the region. Federal officials pointed to a 2024 audit that found significant gaps in financial documentation. - A key surveillance tool seen as vital in preventing terror attacks and catching foreign spies is set to expire Friday after congressional efforts to temporarily extend it failed in bipartisan fashion.
It's a significant lapse for the program known as Section 702, and even as President Donald Trump nominates a new national intelligence director more palatable to both Republicans and Democrats than his initial pick, it’s unclear how soon lawmakers — set for recess — would be able to revive the spy program.
Still, there may not be an immediate drop-off given that a court order from March authorized these government surveillance powers to remain in effect for another year.
The provision is a part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, and grants American spy agencies sweeping powers to collect and examine the communications of foreigners located outside the United States without first getting a warrant.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted Friday on X that an agreement “has never been closer.” He gave no details, saying a final deal was still pending.
The apparent breakthrough in negotiations comes after Iran exchanged fire with the U.S. and Israel over three days this week, threatening to return the Middle East to full-scale war.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said multiple times in recent weeks that the countries were on the cusp of a deal. The war launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28 has rattled the Middle East and virtually shut down oil and natural gas shipments from the Persian Gulf. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since April 7.

The report projects that the program’s retirement trust fund will be depleted in 2032, about a year earlier than previously estimated. After that point, Social Security would still collect payroll taxes from workers, but those incoming revenues would only be enough to cover roughly 75 to 80 percent of scheduled retirement benefits.
"The OASI Trust Fund is projected to become depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032, one quarter earlier than projected in last year’s report," the document states.
That means benefits would not stop entirely. Instead, if Congress does not act before the trust fund is exhausted, payments will be reduced for retirees, people with disabilities, and families receiving survivors’ benefits.

- Description
- Disgraced hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, convicted last year for prostitution-related offenses, is being hit with another series of allegations that he sexually assaulted a minor.
In a lawsuit filed this week in California, an unidentified former child actor accused Combs of sexually assaulting him during a networking event in the Hollywood Hills in May 2007.
"Defendant Combs' conduct ... was outrageous, intended to terrorize and cause him emotional distress, and did in fact cause him emotional distress. This assault was so extreme as to go beyond the bound of decency and be regarded intolerable by civilized society," the lawsuit stated.
A spokesman for Combs, now serving a 50-month prison sentence, called the allegations "false and ridiculous."
"He's just another hater in a long list of people trying to get in on the money gravy train encouraged by personal injury lawyers. Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone--and that in...

- Bill Gates said Wednesday that he made a “grave error in judgment” by meeting with Jeffrey Epstein but denied any wrongdoing as the Microsoft co-founder faced hours of questioning from lawmakers about his relationship with the disgraced financier.
In an opening statement provided to The Associated Press, Gates said he “should never have met with Epstein in the first place,” but that he “never witnessed nor had any indication that Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct.”
The tech billionaire became the latest powerful figure linked to Epstein to testify before the House Oversight Committee in a closed-door deposition. The committee chairman, Republican Rep. James Comer, formally requested that Gates testify after he appeared multiple times in a trove of documents released by the Justice Department as part of its Epstein probe.
As Gates arrived at the Capitol, he noted that his appearance was voluntary and said he hoped his test...

- The CEO of the largest Democratic fundraising platform pleaded the Fifth nearly two dozen times Wednesday rather than answer questions from lawmakers. Her appearance came amid allegations that ActBlue misled Congress about alleged donor fraud.
Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, told The National News Desk, Regina Wallace-Jones initially volunteered to appear before his committee in May, but on Monday, her attorneys requested a subpoena for her testimony. Which he sent 24 hours later.
"I was mostly disappointed because I was concerned that she would ultimately plead the fifth rather than answer the questions that we have,” Rep. Steil said.
His concerns came to life during Wednesday’s hearing. Wallace-Jones pleaded the Fifth 22 times.
Including eight of his own questions.
"Did you weaken fraud prevention standards to increase donations on the ActBlue platform?" Steil asked. "On ...

- The United States launched a second round of airstrikes on Iran into Thursday morning after President Donald Trump warned that Tehran would “pay the price” for stalled negotiations.
The new assault across multiple cities comes as efforts to negotiate an end the war again appeared stuck, with Iran insisting it would maintain its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted global energy supplies and sent oil prices higher.
Iran threatened to retaliate for the strikes, and missile sirens sounded Thursday morning in Bahrain, home to the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet while the Kuwaiti military reported that its air defenses were firing. After the first round of American strikes on Wednesday, Iran launched missiles at Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
The U.S. Central Command said it had “completed” its latest round of airstrikes just before sunrise in Iran. The military command said the strikes came “in response to Iran’s...

- Members of Congress are questioning whether it has become too expensive and complicated for fans to watch their favorite NFL teams each week as the league expands its use of streaming platforms.
Lawmakers and witnesses raised concerns about the growing number of subscriptions needed to follow games, including out-of-market matchups carried on services such as Netflix, Amazon, Peacock, ESPN and the NFL Sunday Ticket package.
“It would cost the average sports fan at least 575 dollars or upwards of 800 dollars for those without existing subscriptions,” Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., said.
A Fox News poll from March found that 72% of sports fans and 60% of nonfans think sports should stay on free TV rather than move to streaming.
The scrutiny came ahead of a House Judiciary hearing examining the Sports Broadcasting Act. The committee released a report asking whether the NFL violated the antitrust exemption in the 1961 law that was int...

- A man who opened fire on a U.S. Marshals Service task force and was then shot Monday afternoon in Buffalo is linked to a recent homicide in Rochester, according to the Rochester Police Department.
Authorities said the task force was executing a federal warrant at a home on Glenwood Avenue in Buffalo when Keith Holmes, 30, of Rochester, shot at officers.
"They went in, they knocked and announced their presence," said U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo. "And as they approached the bedroom where Mr. Holmes was, Mr. Holmes began discharging a firearm, striking a shield, luckily being held by one of the marshals."
Authorities said the officers returned fire, striking Holmes and injuring him. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he remained Wednesday. No officers were injured.
Court records show Holmes was on federal probation after serving four years in prison on fentanyl sales and gun charges out of Augusta, Maine. Prosecutors s...

- Eight years of preparation have led up to the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. Unfortunately, many fans can't afford to attend.
This year's World Cup is the most expensive for fans in tournament history. When asked about the high ticket prices on Tuesday, FIFA president Gianni Infantino downplayed fans' frustration about being priced out.
"You know, they are not angry when they have to watch other sports in the U.S., of which the prices are actually much higher than the World Cup prices," Infantino told CNBC.
Last September, before tickets went on sale, FIFA said the lowest price for a group stage game ticket would be $60 and the most expensive ticket for the final game would be $6,730. However, the caveat was that once ticket sales started, FIFA would use dynamic pricing – the higher the demand, the higher the price.
As of Wednesday, the cheapest group stage ticket was $167 for a match between Cabo Ver...

- President Donald Trump warned Wednesday morning on social media that Iran “will have to pay the price” after Tehran allegedly shot down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz, escalating an already volatile military confrontation between the two countries.
Speaking from the Oval Office later in the day, Trump signaled that additional U.S. military action could be imminent.
“We’re going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard,” Trump said. “We hit them hard yesterday. We’re going to hit them hard again today.”
The latest escalation began Monday when an American Apache helicopter went down while operating near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. Trump said Iran “shot down” the aircraft, while a U.S. official later said an Iranian drone collided with the helicopter, causing it to crash.
The two pilots aboard the aircraft were safely rescued by what the U.S. military described as a dron...

- Description
- President Donald Trump signed a bill into law Wednesday that gives his immigration and deportation agenda a nearly $70 billion boost for the rest of his time in the White House.
The bill provides $38 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and $26 billion for the Border Patrol. An additional $5 billion would cover unforeseen costs, according to the White House.
Trump signed the legislation in the Oval Office on Wednesday, a day after House Republicans pushed the measure through by a 214-212 vote over the objections of Democrats. His signature ended a nearly six-month fight over Department of Homeland Security funding that began with the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, in January during federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis.

- The United States launched airstrikes early Wednesday against Iran, and U.S. President Donald Trump said more were on the way, as Tehran fired back at countries in the region. The escalating attacks threatened to derail efforts to end the war, with Trump warning that Tehran would “pay the price” for stalled peace negotiations.
Trump’s warning came hours after Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan — all of which host U.S. troops — came under Iranian fire. It was the second time this week that back-and-forth strikes have tested a two-month ceasefire.
On Monday, Iran and Israel targeted each other. Israel’s military said it launched multiple strikes in southern Lebanon over the past day, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.
Iran, meanwhile, has proved resilient despite having faced weeks of heavy bombing. It is betting that its ability to effectively close the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial passageway for the world’s oil and natural gas — gives ...
