Dan Maurer founded the nonprofit Elevate Nepal more than a decade ago. The organization works with rural Nepali communities to provide resources including clean drinking water, sanitation and electricity.
Now, Maurer said the organization is preparing to help communities devastated by the flooding, but the scale of the disaster has made it difficult to determine exactly what is needed.
Elevate Nepal, which has experience responding to natural disasters, has launched a fundraiser and plans to coordinate with partners on the ground to determine where resources are needed most.

Dan Maurer founded the nonprofit Elevate Nepal more than a decade ago. The organization works with rural Nepali communities to provide resources including clean drinking water, sanitation and electricity.
Now, Maurer said the organization is preparing to help communities devastated by the flooding, but the scale of the disaster has made it difficult to determine exactly what is needed.
Elevate Nepal, which has experience responding to natural disasters, has launched a fundraiser and plans to coordinate with partners on the ground to determine where resources are needed most.
Maurer cautioned that the danger is not over. Nepal remains in its monsoon season, meaning additional flooding could further complicate recovery efforts.

- A local animal rescue is picking up the pieces after it says someone vandalized a cat colony it cares for in Rochester.
Hand to Paw Cat Rescue operates a sanctuary for community cats on a vacant lot along Pullman Avenue. The nonprofit said volunteers arrived Wednesday morning to find shelters at the site intentionally destroyed, leaving the cats vulnerable.
The organization has cared for cats at the property for more than two years and said it is particularly concerned about their safety with colder weather approaching.
Steve Drave, vice president of Hand to Paw Cat Rescue, said the organization wants neighbors to understand that it is not bringing cats into the area.
“People feel that we are bringing cats here. We're feeding cats. We're drawing cats into the neighborhood,” Drave said. “What we want the community to understand is that is not the case.”

The recordings, obtained by 13WHAM through a federal Freedom of Information Act request, capture communications between airport operations and air traffic control moments after a passenger reentered the secure side of the airport through an exit lane.
In one recording, an airport operations employee is heard telling the tower to stop a Southwest flight from leaving.
