- Description
- A new policy at the George Eastman Museum is drawing pushback from local photographers after the historic venue announced it will begin charging hundreds of dollars per hour for photo sessions on its property.
The museum posted revised rules Monday, stating it will now charge $400 per hour for outdoor photo sessions and $600 per hour for indoor sessions. The policy says all special-event photography will only be permitted with a pre-approved, paid reservation. This applies to both paid professional and unpaid non-professional photography.
Local photographer Erin Cummings, who has taken photos on the historic grounds for years, said the new fees could deter clients from booking sessions at the museum, which she described as her most requested location.
“I feel like a lot of photographers that I know are taking it as a message of ‘We just don’t want you there,'" Cummings said. "I hope that’s not their intention."

- As Bartlett Street and other nearby roads in the city of Rochester undergo chip sealing, the dust from the loose gravel is causing concern for some neighbors.
A Rochester spokesperson said this is a part of the city's lead service line replacement project, which aims to reduce exposure to lead in drinking water.
While neighbors who called the 13WHAM newsroom, like Lamontie Thurman, said they aren't opposed to the chip sealing project or its intent, they are concerned about the amount of dust on their street.
"I'm not trying to be disrespectful, and I know they're trying to do their job, but what about us living here?" Thurman said.
The project, spanning several streets, is listed on the city's paving planner website. The city said chip sealing to smooth out the roadway comes after the city replaced a significant number of lead pipes in the neighborhood.
Even though the city posted signs to drive slowly during chip sealing...

- What was once the Extended Stay America, tucked away behind West Ridge Road on Center Place Drive, is now under new ownership as Studio 6 Extended Stay.
One man who lives nearby said the prior business was, for years, a revolving door of illicit activity.
"From what I understand, there's been several instances of arrests and possible drug activity," he said.
The man wished to remain anonymous, as did an employee at a nearby clinic.
"We would walk dogs often, morning and afternoon, and unfortunately, I found baggies of illicit drugs of some type," she said. "It's just unusual. It's a hazard risk for the dogs."
She said people living at the Extended Stay would often come into her business and behave erratically, forcing her to call police.
"We've had something stolen off of our property, such as picnic tables," she said. "They've gone and actually have lived behind our garbage at one point."

- America’s strategic petroleum reserves are being drained to historically low levels as the United States responds to the ongoing conflict with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about how prepared the country would be if another emergency hits.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the Strategic Reserve is nearing a decades-low mark.
“The Strategic Reserve is probably just about a week or two away from reaching its lowest level since 1983,” De Haan said.
The reserve levels are approaching the low point of Joe Biden’s presidency, when his administration tapped the reserves after Russia invaded Ukraine and gas prices surged. That decision became a political flashpoint for Republicans, including when President Trump announced his bid for another run at the White House in 2022.

On Tuesday, WJAR spoke with Melanie Barrick, the owner of Sweet Stuff Bake Shop in Norton. Barrick said she was asked by a company to do it for an employee leaving.
After finishing the cake, Barrick posted it on her Facebook, as she does with all of her cakes, quickly after she took it down and posted an apology.
However, the Sun Chronicle obtained a screenshot of the post.
"It's deeply, deeply offensive, but not as a Jew as an American," said Rabbi Yossi Kivman, Manfield's Chabad Jewish Center. "We reached out to the bakery when we heard about this, and we offered to have her meet with a Holocaust survivor."

He added all contracts will be out by the end of this month, noting the department is making "great progress."
Mullin's comments came as he testified before the House Homeland Security Committee about his department's 2027 fiscal year budget. He testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee Tuesday.
However, Mullin clarified the primary wall is separate from the secondary wall.
"The primary wall is the first wall up because of the way the cartels adjust... they're thugs and they're terrorists," Mullin said. "We have to push out a secondary wall because they've been going in and cutting the wall, and before we can respond to some of these remote areas, they've been able to get through."

- A fundamental disagreement between the United States and Iran has impeded progress toward a peace deal: Tehran believes Israeli attacks in Lebanon equate to attacks on Iran, while Washington says they are two separate issues.
“Either the war ends in both Iran and Lebanon or in neither," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Lebanese outlet Al Mayadeen.
On Thursday, day 97 of the Iran war, Israel and Hezbollah continued to exchange strikes. The Iran-backed terror group rejected the terms of a renewed ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel brokered by the United States, further jeopardizing diplomatic efforts to end the broader war.
Araghchi said he had personally conveyed to American negotiators that Tehran would consider an attack on Beirut "a major act of aggression."

- President Donald Trump announced a nearly $700 million federal support package for the coal industry, using emergency powers under the Defense Production Act to help keep coal-fired power plants operating and expand coal exports.
Trump said the administration will use authority under a Cold War-era national defense law to support more than a dozen coal plants across the country and help build new coal plants in multiple states, including West Virginia and Alaska.
Trump bragged that his policies are putting coal miners back to work, but the numbers tell the exact opposite story. Since Trump retook office in 2025, the U.S. has lost 1,800 coal mining jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
If built, the plants would be the first new U.S. coal plants since 2013. The money will also help restart a coal-fired power plant in Maryland and support construction of a long-delayed coal export terminal in Oakland, California.

- A man carrying what authorities described as an explosive device powerful enough to damage a plane, as well as a torch lighter, knife, zip ties and other items, was arrested after trying to pass through a Sacramento International Airport security checkpoint over the weekend, federal prosecutors in California said.
The 49-year-old from Sacramento was wearing a scarf covering his face and latex gloves, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said in a news release. He also had five cell phones: one with a 15-minute timer set to begin, a second with a message on the screen from another phone number saying, “we will be awaiting your call.”
Evidence photos released by prosecutors show a cardboard tube about the size of a toilet paper roll fitted with a green fuse. Bomb technicians tested the device. The powder and fuse “were determined to be viable and energetic,” Grant said.

- The House approved a war powers resolution Wednesday that would halt the U.S. military action against Iran, defying President Donald Trump as a handful of Republicans joined with Democrats to seek to end the three-month-long war. Opposition to the war has only grown as the conflict drags on and as Trump struggles to negotiate a quick resolution.
The resolution from the House does not immediately stop the war. It now goes to the Senate, where four Republican senators last month joined Democrats in advancing a similar measure to curtail the U.S. campaign against Iran. The Senate has yet to take a final vote.

All Democrats present voted for the measure to effectively halt the U.S. military campaign against Iran. Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., Warren Davison, R-Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Tom Barrett, R-Mich., were the lone Republicans to buck the president and support the war powers resolution.
Massie, an ardent foe of the president who lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger, and Davidson, a libertarian-aligned lawmaker have criticized the war in Iran. Fitzpatrick and Barrett are both facing potentially difficult re-election bids in swing districts.

- The fate of California’s primary election for governor was unsettled Wednesday, with election workers yet to count millions of ballots and three leading candidates holding out hope that they would win one of two available spots in the general election.
Steve Hilton, a Trump-endorsed Republican, and Xavier Becerra, a former Biden administration official, led in incomplete results in the nonpartisan primary for governor, but Tom Steyer, a progressive billionaire, told supporters late Tuesday that he was “going to give democracy time to work.” In deep-blue Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, was forced into a runoff that could pit her against a Republican reality TV star.
Counting votes in California takes time — sometimes weeks — because of the state’s dependence on mail-in ballots, which require more labor to count, and the painstaking verification process for those ballots.

Democrats in the state Legislature are taking the first steps toward a plan to give themselves more control over redistricting, introducing a proposal Monday that could open the door to a new set of aggressively gerrymandered congressional lines for the 2028 elections.
The measure came as Democrats in New York vowed to counter Republican redistricting efforts elsewhere but were barred from redrawing the state’s map without a constitutional amendment, which requires two legislative approvals over two years before it can go to voters as a ballot referendum.
Democrats are instead moving forward with a proposal to change the state constitution’s redistricting rules, potentially allowing themselves to more easily draw new districts while also removing a ban on lines that favor political parties.

Though votes were still being counted, Democrats Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer and Republican Steve Hilton started looking to November, laying out their visions for leading the nation’s most populous state and one of the world’s largest economies.
Only two will advance to the general election, however, and The Associated Press has not yet called the primary for any candidate. The state has a history of substantial vote updates after Election Day that can sometimes shift the outcome of elections as late-arriving mail and drop-off votes are counted. Hilton and Becerra were leading so far, with Steyer running slightly further back.

- Description
- A man convicted of killing a 7-year-old girl nearly three decades ago in Wyoming County has been denied parole for the third time, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
Angel Colon, now 52, has been in state prison since October 1998 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Samantha Zaldivar, his girlfriend's daughter.
Zaldivar was first reported missing in February 1997. Her body was found three months later on the edge of a wooded area in a field less than 300 yards away from her family home in Hermitage, a hamlet in Wethersfield.
"Her last moments were — she was assaulted and then she screamed, and then she was smothered," said Elizabeth Delude, Zaldivar's friend.
Colon was also originally charged with sexual assault after authorities determined he raped Zaldivar before killing her.
Colon was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after accepting a...

- California: Voters are weighing in on who should lead the nation’s most populous state, where there is no clear leader among candidates vying to advance in the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Plus, U.S. House races are on the ballot, along with the Los Angeles mayor’s race.
New Mexico: Contests in the state include primaries for congressional seats, a U.S. Senate seat and a long list of statewide offices, but the governor’s race is the main attraction. Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland won the Democratic nomination Tuesday night, putting her on a historic path for Native American leaders.
New Jersey: One of this year’s most closely watched House midterms will take place in the battleground district represented by Rep. Tom Kean Jr., who has drawn public scrutiny and concern after missing more than 100 House votes due to an undisclosed medical issue. Democratic voters selected Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, to take him...

- U.S. forces disabled an oil tanker bound for an Iranian port after the vessel ignored repeated warnings and failed to comply with orders issued under a U.S.-enforced maritime blockade, according to military officials.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Tuesday said the Botswana-flagged tanker M/T Lexie was traveling through international waters toward Kharg Island, which is one of Iran's primary oil export terminals, when it was intercepted by American forces.
"The ship's crew ignored repeated warnings, failing to comply with directions from U.S. forces multiple times over a 24-hour period," CENTCOM said in a post on X.
"A U.S. aircraft ultimately disabled the vessel by firing a Hellfire missile into the ship's engine room, preventing the tanker from reaching Iran," according to CENTCOM.
Military officials said the tanker was "unladen" at the time, as it was not carrying oil or other cargo.

- Voters in Los Angeles are casting ballots on Tuesday in a closely watched mayoral election that will determine who leads the nation's second-largest city through some of its most pressing challenges.
The race comes as Los Angeles continues to grapple with homelessness, rising housing costs, budget pressures, and ongoing debates over immigration policy.
Who's Running?
Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass is seeking a second term after making homelessness a central focus of her administration. Bass has pointed to efforts to move people off the streets and into temporary housing, while critics argue the city continues to struggle with visible encampments and affordability concerns.
City Councilmember Nithya Raman has emerged as a prominent challenger, campaigning on housing affordability, homelessness solutions, and expanding access to housing throughout the city.

- President Donald Trump has tapped Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to serve as acting director of national intelligence — elevating a real estate scion with no clear national security credentials to a key post as the U.S. remains at war with Iran.
Trump made the surprise announcement Tuesday on social media that Pulte would be replacing Tulsi Gabbard, the former Hawaii congresswoman who had served as the director of national intelligence. Trump said Pulte will keep his other positions even as he fills in for Gabbard, who resigned last month after revealing her husband’s cancer diagnosis.

- Description
- California’s gubernatorial primary comes to a close Tuesday as voters choose from an extensive field of candidates hoping to replace termed-out Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The end of the voting period, which began in early May, concludes a chaotic contest without a clear front-runner. Candidates tried to elbow each other out in the final stretch as each sought to convince voters that they were best prepared to lead the most populous state and one of the world’s largest economies.
California puts all candidates on a single primary ballot regardless of party, and the top two finishers advance to the November general election. About 60 candidates were on the ballot, most of them largely unknown to the state’s roughly 23 million voters.
In the race’s final days, much of the attention focused on two Democrats — Xavier Becerra, a former state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, and Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist — and R...

- Dozens of first responders surrounded The Metropolitan in downtown Rochester Tuesday night for several hours as crews rescued three workers stuck on a window-washing rig.
A power outage at the building around 7 p.m. left the rig stranded more than 20 stories above the ground, according to Lt. Howard Villegas of the Rochester Fire Department.
Crews used a saw to cut open a window and rescue the workers after more than an hour, Villegas said. None of them were hurt or in distress.
Michael Tougas, who lives in the building, said he flew his personal drone up to the rig to make sure the men were OK.
"They honestly looked comfortable in the basket, waiting up there for someone to get them out," Tougas said. "I don't think it's their first rodeo. I think they've been stuck in a basket before. I can't image they were too pressed or scared."
Tougas said the men began work that morning to replace a broken window on the buil...

Nordquist, 24, a transgender man from Oakdale, Minnesota, traveled to the Finger Lakes region in September 2024 and stayed at Patty’s Lodge in Hopewell. Authorities said Nordquist's body was found in a Yates County field Feb. 13, 2025 after enduring weeks of torture.
Emily Motyka was among seven defendants awaiting trial in the case. In a release Tuesday, MacBride announced Motyka pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree kidnapping.
MacBride said Motyka has expressed remorse and is the only defendant to accept responsibility for Nordquist's death.
"Ms. Motyka is 19 years old, has no criminal history and, if we look at each of the seven defendants individually, Ms. Motyka certainly participated to a large extent but not to the same level ...

Police said a woman was eating a meal in her car outside the restaurant around 1:05 a.m. when Brian Wheeler, 45, forced his way inside the vehicle, pulled a razor blade and tried to take the car — slashing the woman's right hand in the struggle.
"(We) didn't really get a clear motive from him," said Captain Josh Spearman from the Greece Police Department. "Seemed like a crime of opportunity."
A man named Giuseppe, who was just getting off his shift at work, happened to be walking by. Police said he helped the victim escape and detained Wheeler until officers arrived.
"It could have ended poorly for sure, for everybody, so thank God we had somebody who stepped in and helped her out," Spearman said.
Giuseppe said he wasn't thinking — he just springing into action.

- The Trump administration is unveiling new details about how upcoming Medicaid work requirements will be enforced — a policy change that could affect millions of Americans who rely on the government health program.
The new rule, released this week by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, outlines how states must implement work requirements beginning next year. Under the policy, many low-income adults without disabilities will be required to prove they worked, volunteered, or attended school for at least 80 hours per month in order to maintain Medicaid eligibility.
Administration officials say the policy is designed to reduce fraud and ensure taxpayer dollars are protected.
“We’re not looking the other way; we’re aggressively taking on these challenges,” CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said ahead of a White House briefing on the rule.
Oz also defended the administration’s broader crackdown on improper Medicaid paym...

- Democrats hoping to flip a U.S. Senate seat in Maine are facing growing questions about their presumptive nominee, Graham Platner, as a sexting scandal and past controversies threaten to overshadow his challenge to five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Platner, who has gone from underdog to favorite in the race, acknowledged exchanging sexually explicit text messages with other women while married to his wife, Amy Gertner. Asked about Platner’s assertion that the messages should be private, Collins said, “I think it’s a reflection of character.”
Gertner defended her husband on Saturday.
“Graham and I have a great marriage. Being married is hard. Being newly married is hard. Being newly married and going through infertility is hard. Being newly married, going through infertility and a Senate campaign is hard," she said during a video released by Platner's campaign.
Platner has also apologized for offensive posts on Reddit,...

- Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared on Capitol Hill Tuesday for the first of two hearings in which he faced questions about the Trump administration's handling of the three-month war in Iran and the uncertain future of nuclear negotiations.
The former Republican senator was scheduled to present the State Department's annual budget request before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but lawmakers quickly turned their attention to Iran.
In his first public testimony since the conflict began, Rubio expressed optimism about the prospects for renewed nuclear talks despite growing uncertainty surrounding a fragile ceasefire.
Rubio told lawmakers that Iranian officials have agreed to discuss aspects of their nuclear program that they had previously refused to put on the table, though he declined to assess the likelihood of a final agreement.

- Democrats are trying to defend California and make inroads in Iowa in primary elections. California's governor's race is lacking star power this year. Big names like Kamala Harris and Alex Padilla have opted out, leaving a crowded field of about 60 candidates. It's a somewhat different story in Los Angeles, where a reality television personality is running for mayor as the city prepares to host the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Democrats are looking to Iowa for one of their best chances to pick up a governor’s seat in a state that's repeatedly disappointed them. Republicans are grappling with a New Jersey congressman whose unexplained absence could put their already slim majority at risk.
Here are some things to watch as voters in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota cast ballots.

- Secretary of State Marco Rubio says he is optimistic about the potential for a resumption in nuclear talks with Iran despite a shaky ceasefire in the war looking increasingly in doubt.
Rubio told lawmakers Tuesday in his first public testimony since the Iran war began that the Iranians have agreed to negotiate on nuclear points that they had not been willing to address in the past but would not offer an assessment on what those talks might produce.
“They have agreed to negotiate aspects of their nuclear program that just a month ago, just a year ago, they were refusing to even mention," Rubio told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He did not elaborate.
He added, however, that it’s “not a guarantee that ultimately it will lead to a deal that’s acceptable” and that these negotiations have been made difficult by the instability of Iran’s leadership.
His optimism is running into the revelation that Iran has stopped commu...
