Moore said standing with survivors also means listening to their experiences and demanding change.
"We need to hear their voices," Moore said. "We need to lift up, and we just can't push it underneath the carpet or the rug anymore, and we got to say enough is enough."

- A federal immigration officer shot and wounded a Dominican man while arresting him in New York City on Thursday, during what the Department of Homeland Security called a “targeted enforcement operation.” Protesters decried it as an example of the dangers of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
The man survived and is being treated at a hospital, the agency said. It did not describe exactly what led to the shooting, saying only that “during the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon” and that the man was injured.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul said they had received reports the agents fired at the man while he was inside a vehicle with a 5-year-old child, who was apparently unhurt. Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable and incredibly serious” and said he aimed to tell President Donald Trump to end all federal immigration enforcement actions in the city.

Built in the 1950s, and abandoned in 1995, the building used to house the Rochester Psychiatric Center. It's now riddled with asbestos, with broken windows and graffiti visible from the street.
Grace Carswell has lived across from the building for about 40 years, since before it was abandoned. She said she's watched the building deteriorate and become a hot spot for vandals.
"It's been a terrible eyesore all these years," she said. "There hasn't been news about what's going to be done, just that it might be coming down, and so it's been a long, hard siege."
In 2019, two people were trapped on the roof during a fire. It took about 60 firefighters to search the vacant, 17-story, 500,000-square-foot building.

"But when and if any contacts occur, we're very closely (working) with the system and importantly with the health department," Wong said.
Yet, a concern for Dr. Michael Apostolakos, chief medical officer at Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals, is the downward trend of people getting vaccinated.

- A 67-year-old man jumped to his death Monday after he called 911 to report his apartment in Clifton Springs was filling with flumes, Ontario County David Cirencione said Tuesday.
Cirencione said the county's 911 center received a call at 8:49 a.m. Monday from a resident of the Foster Block Apartments who said his fourth-floor apartment was filling with fumes and causing him to suffer a headache.
The man did not answer the door when first responders arrived, Cirencione said, prompting them to force their way in. Upon their entry, the man jumped out his window, falling 28 feet before landing on a second-story porch roof.
Cirencione said the man was unresponsive when first responders got to him, but they were able to help him regain a pulse. He was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.
An inspection of the apartment found no gas leaks or other hazardous conditions, Cirencione said. The man's body was tak...

- A man accused of stabbing his mother to death last month at a mobile home community in Penfield pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder, burglary, and petit larceny.
According to a felony complaint, Joseph Petrella, 39, stabbed and cut Amy Hogan, 60, multiple times during a confrontation inside their trailer on Ewald Drive, causing her death.
"I don't know if we'll ever know the full story of how it unfolded, how Amy Hogan died that night, fully what led up to it, why he did what he did," Assistant District Attorney Ellie Laloudakis said. "But we do believe between the nights of the night Sept. 12 into Sept. 13 of 2026, he did stab Amy Hogan to death and left her in the home during that time up until deputies found her on Sept. 13."
Deputies initially responded to a neighboring trailer Sept. 13 for a report of a burglary. According to a supporting deposition, a neighbor told deputies the inside of their car was ransacked and items were missing. Aft...

- A new report is raising questions about whether ChatGPT's safeguards are doing enough to protect teenage users.
Common Sense Media, a nonprofit research group focused on children's digital safety, says its testing found ChatGPT for Teens poses an "unacceptable risk" to teenagers, less than two months after the platform launched.
ChatGPT for Teens was introduced by OpenAI as a learning-focused experience with additional protections and safeguards for younger users.
Those features were promoted as being able to predict a user's age, discourage cheating through a study mode, remind teenagers to take breaks, enhance privacy and avoid language that could foster unhealthy attachment.
The platform is also designed to alert parents about potential self-harm.
Common Sense Media said its testing found a teen account could discuss suicide, self-harm or disordered eating for an extended period without triggering a parental notificati...

- Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets across France in protests that began over concerns about school conditions and education spending but have grown into wider demonstrations, some of which have turned violent.
The protests began with students demonstrating over poor conditions at schools and teacher shortages.
"To them, we are young enough to be kicked, to be gassed, but we are not old enough to be listened to," French high school student Octave Marty said. "We should be listened to."
President Donald Trump weighed in on the unrest Wednesday, disputing that education is the driving force behind the demonstrations and instead blaming immigration.
"What's happening in France is nothing less than out of control mass migration," Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that he believed the unrest was about Islam rather than schools.

- The State Department has sent Russia a formal diplomatic complaint seeking additional information about the death of 28-year-old lab researcher Darya Shipilova.
"We have officially requested additional information from the Russian government," a State Department spokesperson said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also called on Russia to provide more information about the circumstances surrounding Shipilova's death.
"I think it's incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world. That's what they should do," Rubio said.
Russian authorities have not confirmed that Shipilova died from pneumonic plague, instead saying her pneumonia was caused by an "unknown cause."
The World Health Organization said Wednesday it has also requested more information about her death.
"We don't yet have the full picture of this event," a WHO official said.

- On a field where music festival revelers were gunned down by Hamas-led militants three years ago, Israelis on Wednesday embraced and wept for those lost in an attack that plunged the Middle East into war.
Israelis mourned at the site of the Nova Music Festival, as well as at bomb shelters, intersections and in communities targeted on Oct. 7, 2023. On that day — the deadliest in the country’s history — militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostage. Israel’s retaliatory offensive killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, destroyed much of Gaza and drove most of its 2 million residents from their homes.
This is the first anniversary since all the hostages, living and dead, were returned. Signs calling for their return are mostly gone, but reminders of those who were killed are ubiquitous in a country still reckoning with the trauma of that day.
For Palestinians, the anniversary brings another day of fear and misery. Most Gaza residents l...

- A former high-ranking Department of Justice official will look at how Cornell handles sexual misconduct complaints, university trustees announced Tuesday as they tried to address an outpouring of anger over allegations of a 2024 gang rape at a fraternity house.
Sally Yates, who was a deputy attorney general in the Obama administration, will spearhead the review, the trustees said. The assessment is to include how the Ivy League university investigates reports of sexual assault and sexual harassment, how the disciplinary process works, campus police responses and more.
“It is imperative that Cornell be willing to examine itself with the same rigor we expect of others," trustee Chair Anne Meinig Smalling said in a statement.
The announcement comes after days of outrage and a large protest over Cornell’s response to a complaint from a woman known publicly only as Jane Doe. She told campus police in November 2024 that, a few weeks earlier, she had...

- Raymond Wolfgram has lived along Freshour Road in Hopewell for six years, and says he's watched the intersection with State Route 488 become a trouble spot in that time.
"Usually, it's like a rear-end accident or they’re trying to turn the corner," Wolfgram said of crashes at the intersection.
Ontario County records show more than 100 incidents reported at the intersection since 2014.
One of them recently had a devastating outcome. A dump truck collided with a medical transport bus Aug. 19, killing Tiffany Stewart, 33, and injuring six others.
Now, the state is changing the way drivers move through the intersection. Freshour Road and Route 488 will become a four-way stop. New stop signs and stop-ahead signs are being installed to give drivers more warning.
The New York State Department of Transportation said work will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will be done by the end of the day.

- Description
- With the November 3 midterm elections less than a month away, control of the U.S. Senate could hinge on a handful of closely watched contests.
Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to reach 51 and take control of the chamber, making both Republican-held seats they hope to flip and Democratic-held seats they must defend important to the overall balance of power.
Four races stand out: Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Michigan.
Republican Ken Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico in one of the most closely watched races of the cycle.
Texas has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections, but polling shows a competitive Senate contest. The latest Siena College poll, conducted October 3, has Talarico leading Paxton 51% to 45%. A Fox News poll conducted just before that had Talarico ahead 51% to 49%. Across five recent polls, Talarico leads Paxton by about four points.

Federal authorities arrested Wanying Zhang at Los Angeles International Airport as she allegedly attempted to board a flight to Shanghai.
Investigators allege the Chinese government sent Zhang to surveil the family of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, including taking photos and videos of their license plates.
Zhang is charged with acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the arrest is part of the bureau's efforts to target national security threats involving foreign governments operating inside the United States.
"The Chinese government allegedly sent an operative to surveil the family of Taiwan's President on AMERICAN SOIL — photos, video, license plates — then she tried to hop a flight back to Shanghai," Patel...

- France is struggling to contain its largest student protests in decades as demonstrations that began over conditions at a suburban high school expand into a nationwide crisis.
The protests began in September in support of striking teachers at a high school north of Paris who were raising concerns about systemic failures within the country's education system.
The demonstrations have since spread, with students taking to the streets and, in some cases, clashing with police as they demand their concerns be heard.
"We, to them, we are young enough to be kicked, to be gassed, but we are not old enough to be listened [to]," high school student Octave Marty said. "That's pretty crazy. I mean, we should be listened [to]."
Hundreds of schools have been forced to close amid the unrest.
More than 5,000 people have also been taken into police custody, most of them minors with no previous criminal records.

- Death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking as she remains hospitalized after surviving Tennessee's attempt to execute her by lethal injection.
Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed Sept. 30 for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer but survived after receiving two doses of the execution drug pentobarbital.
Her attorneys said she remains in critical care and faces what could be a lengthy recovery. Her prognosis remains unclear.
The failed execution is also raising questions about what happens next and whether Tennessee could attempt to execute Pike a second time.
Attorney David Raybin said the circumstances could lead to arguments that another attempt would violate the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.
Pike's attorneys have also raised concerns about injuries they say she suffered during the execution attempt and have sought to preserve evidence related to the procedure.

Jackson, meanwhile, sought to portray Collins as out of step with Maine voters and argued it is time for new representation in Washington.

Republicans are also sending additional resources into competitive races as the party works to maintain its position in Congress. A Republican-aligned super PAC is putt...

- A 69-year-old woman is accused of stealing more than $230,000 from a local construction company that later closed amid financial difficulties.
Kathleen Merriam, who worked for Redman Construction in the town of Sweden, was arrested Thursday on charges of grand larceny, identity theft and falsifying business records, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Merriam was hired as the company's controller in September 2018, giving her access to its financial accounts.
Court paperwork alleges Merriam stole $233,350.34 between June 2020 and February 2026. Investigators allege that included more than $105,000 in unauthorized raises, about $60,000 in personal purchases on company credit cards, nearly $52,000 in unauthorized paid time off and more than $16,000 charged to a credit card opened in the owner's name.
