- With the Nov. 3 midterm elections approaching, millions of ballots are expected to move by mail as the U.S. Postal Service prepares to implement a new rule to track mail ballots and related applications.
The Postal Service on Thursday published a final rule requiring states to submit voter lists to a federal portal so ballot barcodes can be tracked in and out of the system. The rule also includes the possibility that the Postal Service could refuse delivery for states that do not comply. Whether the rule will be in effect in time for the midterms remains uncertain as legal challenges continue.
This week, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted one injunction affecting the rule and a federal judge lifted another obstacle. Even so, additional lawsuits are being filed, leaving states unsure which procedures will govern mail voting for the midterms.

- It's been nearly 15 years since Jen Pilato and her sister Angel Pilato-Shuman lost three loved ones in a house fire.
Their father, Carmen.
"My dad was amazing," said Jen. "He was everybody's best friend."
Their 12-year-old adopted brother, Joshua.
"He had a lot of friends, boys and girls," Jen said. "All the girls thought he was dreamy."
And their 16-year-old adopted brother, Peter.
"His biggest thing that he always said to me was, ‘When I grow up, I want a wife and I want kids. I want to have a family," Angel said.
The family's Webster home was set on fire early Dec. 7, 2011 by their adopted brother Michael, who was 15 years old at the time.
"We got a phone call at like 1 in the morning that said, 'There's a fire, Dad and the boys are missing, you gotta hurry up and get over here,'" Jen said.

Zymire Hughes, 22, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Nevada Violent Offender Task Force at about 8 p.m. in Las Vegas, according to authorities. He is being held at the Clark County Detention Center as he awaits extradition to Pennsylvania.
“Tonight, the fear that one man brought to the Philadelphia community comes to an end,” Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Clark said.
Investigators said Hughes fled Philadelphia on Aug. 19, first flying from Trenton-Mercer Airport to Orlando, Florida. Authorities said he then flew from Orlando to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

Dr. Gregory Saathoff focused more on the forensic side of things. He highlighted what he felt are inconsistences in Clancy's story and told the jury about the intentional sequence of decisions she made on Jan. 24, 2023.
Saathoff is a forensic psychiatrist who works with the FBI's behavioral analysis unit.
Like other prosecution witnesses, he said the way Clancy described the voices she heard on Jan. 24 was unusual.
"Just as soon as it had started, it stopped," Saathoff said. "The voice had stopped as soon as she had strangled her last -- Callan, her youngest child."
He testified that the fact that the voice was constant, and stopped after she strangled her youngest child, was unusual.

"I noticed a pretty heavy gauge black plastic garbage bag off to the left side of the path, sort of wedged in between the path and a large upright rock," Minervino said.
At first, he didn't think much of it.
"There tends to be a lot of garbage that collects down in that area, all through the forest actually, as you make your way down the hill," he said.
"But then, I noticed that there were a few openings in the garbage bag and noticed what appeared to be fur, a beige-colored fur of some kind," he added.
