- Carrie Cocca owns R's Market on Monroe Avenue in Brighton and is one of many business owners battling rising costs for just about everything.
"I'm on my eighth year of owning the store. When I first bought the store, I’ll say that basically the red meat prices have doubled, and that is the cost that we pay plus what the cost ends up being for the customer," Cocca said. "It’s been crazy, it's been a wild ride, but we're getting through it, and we do the best we can."
With grocery bills climbing and meat prices squeezing both shoppers and small businesses, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer visited the Rochester area Monday to promote a new proposal he says would take on the meat industry's biggest players and lower costs.
Schumer visited Tops in Walworth to discuss the Family Grocery and Farmers Relief Act. He said the legislation is designed to break up meatpacking monopolies, help farmers and lower grocery costs — particularly meat costs....

- Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp survived President Donald Trump’s bid to oust him in a Republican primary four years ago. Kemp’s hand-picked candidate in a Senate primary on Tuesday might not be as lucky.
Peach State voters are casting their ballots Tuesday in two key Republican primary runoffs: choosing who will face Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in what will be one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races in November, and picking a nominee in the governor’s race, where Trump and term-limited Kemp are aligned.
The state is the focal point on a day in which voters in Washington, DC, will effectively choose their next mayor, those in deep-red Alabama and Oklahoma will pick nominees in major races and one California congressional district could fill a vacancy.
Here’s what to watch in Tuesday’s primaries.
In the Georgia GOP Senate primary runoff to take on Ossoff, who is widely seen as a potential 2028 presidential contender, T...

- The war between the United States and Iran overshadowed discussions on Ukraine Tuesday at the Group of Seven summit in France, as President Donald Trump devoted significant attention on day two to a newly announced ceasefire agreement and lingering tensions across the Middle East.
While European leaders sought to refocus attention on Russia's war in Ukraine, Trump remained largely focused on the aftermath of the three-and-a-half-month conflict with Iran. But according to the Associated Press, Trump told fellow leaders he expected Iran would soon be "back in the rearview mirror" and that he wanted to turn more attention to Ukraine.
Trump announced over the weekend that a U.S.-brokered peace deal with Iran was "complete" and that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes, had reopened to international shipping. Vice President JD Vance later confirmed a preliminary agreement had been signed and said the text would be released t...

Vice President JD Vance said he expected the text of the memorandum, which has already been signed digitally, would be released this week. A formal signing ceremony is planned for Friday in Geneva. Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner will lead the American delegation.

The Republican U.S. president sought to make clear that he arrived in Evian-les-Bains with the wind at his back for talks with G7 leaders, including some who have been sharply critical of his managing of the 15-week-old conflict, which has led to a surge in global energy prices — though he did not immediately seem willing to lay out the details of what was in the emerging deal.

- The U.S. military attack in Venezuela Friday that killed the leader of the Tren de Aragua gang reflects a strategic shift by U.S. President Donald Trump toward direct U.S. involvement in the war on drugs that began earlier this year, with a special focus this time on gaining access to Venezuela’s lucrative mining sector, analysts told The Associated Press.
Trump announced Friday the death of gang leader Hector Rusthenford Guerrero in an airstrike on his compound in rural Venezuela. He has long accused Guerrero’s organization, also known as TDA, of terrorizing communities across the United States, where it has been linked to extortion rackets, drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
The group was listed as a foreign terrorist organization by the State Department last year, with federal prosecutors accusing Guerrero of shipping drugs to the U.S. and organizing acts of terror across borders, including the murder of a Venezuelan dissident in Chile.

It's a significant lapse for the program known as Section 702, and even as President Donald Trump nominates a new national intelligence director more palatable to both Republicans and Democrats than his initial pick, it’s unclear how soon lawmakers — set for recess — would be able to revive the spy program.
Still, there may not be an immediate drop-off given that a court order from March authorized these government surveillance powers to remain in effect for another year.
The provision is a part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, and grants American spy agencies sweeping powers to collect and examine the communications of foreigners located outside the United States without first getting a warrant.

- Local bars are seizing the opportunity with extended serving hours during the FIFA World Cup, which kicked off in Mexico on Thursday afternoon.
48 teams are vying for victory and sporting glory across the North American continent.
While there aren't any games happening close to home, fans and business owners in Rochester still have plenty of reasons to celebrate.
"This afternoon was pretty busy," said Dan Zambito, owner of The Boot Room Pub on South Winton Road in the city.
Zambito describes his bar as Rochester's first all-encompassing soccer bar, dedicated to those devoted fans of the "world's game."
Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation earlier this week permitting New York bars and restaurants, like The Boot Room Pub, to stay open until 4 a.m. so fans don't miss a minute of the action.
"I hope that people can see me as the destination for World Cup games," Zambito said. "I hope that there's going to be a c...

- The Trump administration has identified more than 15,000 cases of adults gaining custody of multiple immigrant children who enter the U.S. without a parent, officials said Thursday, signaling a potential push to prosecute prolific child sponsors.
The Justice Department highlighted cases against three Guatemalan nationals that they say underscore the dangers of improper vetting of sponsors in a program that seeks to unite kids with relatives or family friends after they enter the U.S. Officials said they are investigating numerous other so-called super-sponsors — those who gained custody of more than three unrelated children — to determine whether the sponsors took the kids in fraudulently.
“We will not accept half measures when it comes to securing the border, protecting American lives and saving children from exploitation,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters.

- A new federal Trustees report is renewing concerns about Social Security’s long-term finances — but experts say some of the most alarming claims circulating online are misleading.
The report projects that the program’s retirement trust fund will be depleted in 2032, about a year earlier than previously estimated. After that point, Social Security would still collect payroll taxes from workers, but those incoming revenues would only be enough to cover roughly 75 to 80 percent of scheduled retirement benefits.
"The OASI Trust Fund is projected to become depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032, one quarter earlier than projected in last year’s report," the document states.
That means benefits would not stop entirely. Instead, if Congress does not act before the trust fund is exhausted, payments will be reduced for retirees, people with disabilities, and families receiving survivors’ benefits.

- President Donald Trump said Thursday he is nominating Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and a former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, as director of national intelligence.
Trump announced the nomination on social media amid pressure from Congress to name a permanent replacement for Tulsi Gabbard, who announced her resignation last month. Trump faced intense pushback over his decision to name Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting director. The job oversees the coordination of 18 intelligence agencies.
The resulting uproar led to a standoff in Congress after Democrats said they would refuse to renew foreign intelligence powers unless Trump pulled Pulte’s nomination and named a permanent nominee.
“Few people anywhere in the Legal Community are respected at the level of Jay,” Trump wrote. “I encourage the United States Senate to confirm Jay as soon as possible.”

- For Homeland Security Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., getting to the bottom of how the Coronavirus started has been a top priority for years.
During a May 2021 hearing, Senator Paul asked Dr. Anthony Fauci, “Will you, in front of this group, categorically say that COVID-19 could not have occurred through serial passage in a laboratory?”
Fauci was testifying before the committee and was asked to answer questions about the government's response to the pandemic.
Years later, in July 2025, Sen. Paul continued to assert that more answers were needed.
"The CIA, the FBI and the DOE all say with varying degrees of confidence that they fear that Covid 19 could have started as a lab leak."
Now, Paul has released a new batch of documents, including a timeline of events, showing Dr. Anthony Fauci's ties to the intelligence community date back to 2003.

- After two days of strikes targeting Iran, President Trump warned Thursday that more military action could be coming, even as he later said he was calling off additional strikes because a peace deal appeared close.
Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday morning that more military strikes against Iran were on the way. He also floated seizing Iranian land.
“My preference has always been Kharg Island. I don’t know if America has the stomach for it, to be honest with you. You’d make a fortune, but I don’t think America has a stomach. I think they’d like to see us come home, but we did it with Venezuela," he told Fox News Thursday morning.
By Thursday afternoon, Trump said he was cancelling the strikes and suggested a peace deal was nearing completion. In a post, he wrote in part that “discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership” and that “Discussions and final points have been...

- At more than 130 feet long and weighing 1.2 million pounds, Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 chugged through Western New York on Thursday.
"Pretty neat to see a company like that preserve its history and share that with everyone as well," said Caleb Swope, who came from Ohio to see the train pass through Letchworth State Park.
Big Boy, the world's largest and most powerful operating steam locomotive, is traveling across the country to celebrate America's 250th birthday.
"I think it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this," said Sarah Swope, Caleb's mother. "I think it's a good display of America's expansion and a good way to kind of tie the country together."
The train, built in 1941, traveled Thursday from Buffalo to Silver Springs, into Letchworth and through Hornell before continuing on. The stops drew thousands of spectators.

- Before the end of this Supreme Court term, the nine justices will release opinions in 20 remaining cases.
Thursday morning, President Donald Trump posted about one of these cases that could drastically change what it takes to become an American.
“The United States of America cannot live with the shackles of Birthright Citizenship. It is not economically, or otherwise, sustainable," Trump said.
On Inauguration Day, Trump signed an executive order that would prevent babies born inside the United States from gaining citizenship if their parents are not U.S. citizens. He claimed birthright citizenship was meant to apply to descendants of slaves and serves no purpose today. What's often considered a foundational American principle, Trump argued, is outdated.
“There are going to be people born here, if this order went through, who would no longer really have a country," said Washington Attorney General Nick Brown.

- The White House on Thursday opened its doors to reporters for a first look at the UFC arena constructed on the South Lawn ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated fight card, an event that has drawn both excitement and legal scrutiny.
Crews spent weeks transforming a section of the White House grounds into an outdoor venue centered around the UFC Octagon, which sits beneath a large overhead lighting and production structure known as “The Claw.” The temporary arena is expected to accommodate roughly 4,500 guests for what organizers have billed as a historic fight night.
The event marks one of the most unusual settings in UFC history. Fighters have already arrived in Washington and spent the week preparing not only for their opponents, but also for the challenges of competing outdoors, including heat, humidity and insects. For many, it will be the first outdoor professional fight of their careers.

- Construction of the 250-foot-high triumphal arch that President Donald Trump wants built near the Lincoln Memorial could occur 20 hours per day, year-round, as officials push to complete the project within three years, according to a preliminary assessment by the National Park Service.
Tower cranes up to 320 feet tall, forklifts, concrete pump systems and other equipment would be needed to build the arch, which would be more than twice as high as the Lincoln Memorial. Work would occur year-round in two 10-hour shifts per day, the Park Service report said.
The 24-page assessment by NPS staff was released last week as a part of a fast-tracked historic preservation review that began Friday. The park service oversees the land where the administration wants to build the arch.

The U.S and Iran traded strikes for a second day, pushing the Middle East closer to the resumption of a full-scale war.
It was the third time this week that back-and-forth strikes have rattled the Middle East. The first involved attacks between Iran and Israel, followed by the two rounds of fire between the U.S. and Iran, which hit countries in the region that host American bases.

- Description
- Eight years of preparation have led up to the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. Unfortunately, many fans can't afford to attend.
This year's World Cup is the most expensive for fans in tournament history. When asked about the high ticket prices on Tuesday, FIFA president Gianni Infantino downplayed fans' frustration about being priced out.
"You know, they are not angry when they have to watch other sports in the U.S., of which the prices are actually much higher than the World Cup prices," Infantino told CNBC.
Last September, before tickets went on sale, FIFA said the lowest price for a group stage game ticket would be $60 and the most expensive ticket for the final game would be $6,730. However, the caveat was that once ticket sales started, FIFA would use dynamic pricing – the higher the demand, the higher the price.
As of Wednesday, the cheapest group stage ticket was $167 for a match between Cabo Ver...
