- Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren for not prosecuting certain crimes, removing him from office and naming his replacement.
At a news conference flanked by police from around Tampa Bay, DeSantis said Warren has “put himself publicly above the law” by signing letters saying he would not enforce laws prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors or laws limiting abortion.
“Our government is a government of laws, not a government of men,” DeSantis said.

More than 24 million tons of sargassum blanketed the Atlantic in June, up from 18.8 million tons in May, according to a monthly report published by the University of South Florida’s Optical Oceanography Lab that noted “a new historical record.”
July saw no decrease of algae in the Caribbean Sea, said Chuanmin Hu, an optical oceanography professor who helps produce the reports.
Hu compiled additional data for The Associated Press that showed sargassum levels for the eastern Caribbean at a near record high this year, second only to those reported in July 2018.
Levels in the northern Caribbean are at their third highest, following July 2018 and July 2021, he said.

One of the directives will allow states that have not outlawed abortion to apply for Medicaid waivers that would help them treat women who've traveled from out of state.
The order will also call on health care providers to comply with federal nondiscrimination laws and streamline the collection of key maternal health data.
The order falls short of what many Democratic lawmakers and abortion advocates have demanded of Biden since the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe vs. Wade.

- During a meeting with CEOs Thursday, President Joe Biden continued to dismiss claims the U.S. is in a recession, pointing to a "historically strong" job market along with robust consumer spending and business investment.
Biden spoke after a GDP report was released showing the U.S. economy shrank from April through June for a second straight quarter, contracting at a 0.9% annual pace and raising fears that the nation may be approaching a recession.
Consecutive quarters of falling GDP constitute one informal, though not definitive, indicator of a recession.
Rejecting the notion the U.S. is in a recession right now, Biden said there is "no doubt we expect growth to be slower than last year." But he said that's "consistent with a stable steady growth and lower inflation."

- More research suggests it's time to abandon the craze over vitamin D. Taking high doses of "the sunshine vitamin" doesn't reduce the risk of broken bones in generally healthy older Americans.
It's the latest in a string of disappointments about a nutrient once hoped to have wide-ranging protective effects. That same study of nearly 26,000 people already had found that popping lots of vitamin D pills didn't prevent heart disease, cancer or memory loss either.
"Those who had vitamin D deficiency had no benefit from taking vitamin D supplements," said Dr. Steven Cummings, the Director of the Coordinating Center at Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center.
That's according to a large study that tracked people given either high-dose vitamin D or dummy pills for five years.

- A baby dolphin that was stuck in a crab trap off Clearwater Beach on Wednesday was rescued and taken to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation, according to Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
Clearwater law enforcement notified the aquarium of a distressed animal near Pier 60 about noon Wednesday, aquarium spokesperson Kelsy Long told the Tampa Bay Times. A lifeguard cut the calf free from the remains of a crab trap. The baby dolphin was separated from its mother and was showing signs of distress, including abnormal breathing and low energy.
“Our team was out there in hopes that the mom would return for her calf,” Long said. “Unfortunately, that did not happen.”

- The biggest active Texas wildfire is the 4,000-acre Chalk Mountain Fire about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
The fire, which began Monday afternoon, was just 10% contained after blackening about 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) as of midday Tuesday, and crews using bulldozers were digging containment lines while fire trucks and aircraft worked to extinguish the flames, the forest service said.
No injuries have been reported from the fires, and their causes were under investigation.
A combination of near-record- and record-high temperatures approaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) combined with breezes gusting as high as 30 mph (40-50 kph) and drought conditions to leave the region ripe for fire, the forest service said.
Eight structures are known to have been lost in that fire.
A red flag warning was issued for northern and central Texas.

- Four Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputies shot a 43-year-old Tampa man Thursday who they believed was involved in a carjacking the day before, according to the Clearwater Police Department.
Robert Hubbard was shot after he pointed a handgun at deputies, police said. He later died.
The Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Task Force is investigating the shooting, with Clearwater police taking the lead. Under the guidelines laid out in the task force’s partnership agreement, the Clearwater and St. Petersburg police departments divide use-of-force incidents involving Pinellas County deputies, with Clearwater police investigating those that happen north of Ulmerton and Walsingham roads and St. Petersburg police handling those that happen south of that.

- Since the war in Ukraine began, Tatyana Borisiak has been helping family members and other Ukrainians in relief efforts.
She said on the first day of the war, she was sheltering 27 people in the home she owns in her hometown of Verhovyna in Western Ukraine when many more flooded into the village.
"All the situation in Ukraine. It affects us all. And all of us have to do some kind of part," Borisiak said.
Borisiak remembers working in her hometown village hospital as a teenager and seeing the ambulance that is still used today.
And so came the Idea to raise enough money to purchase a new ambulance to help support displaced families.
By going door to door, asking for donations, she was able to raise $37,000.
The ambulance was outfitted in Germany and arrived in June to the village by way of Poland.
The ambulance is in full operation, providing for the people of the region.

- A team of biologists recently hauled in the heaviest Burmese python ever captured in Florida, officials said.
The female python weighed in at 215 pounds (98 kilograms), was nearly 18 feet long (5 meters) and had 122 developing eggs, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida said in a news release.
The team used radio transmitters transplanted in male "scout" snakes to study python movements, breeding behaviors and habitat use, said Ian Bartoszek, wildlife biologist and environmental science project manager for the conservancy's program.
The team used a scout snake named Dionysus — or Dion for short — in an area of the western Everglades.
Biologist Ian Easterling and intern Kyle Findley helped capture the female snake and haul it through the woods to the field truck.
A necropsy also found hoof cores in the snake's digest system, meaning that an adult white-tailed deer was its last meal.

- Forty-six people were found dead in and near a tractor-trailer and 16 others were taken to hospitals in a presumed migrant smuggling attempt into the United States, officials in San Antonio said.

Ten migrants died in 2017 after being trapped inside a truck that was parked at a Walmart in San Antonio. In 2003, 19 migrants were found in a sweltering truck southeast of San Antonio.
