- Steve Mitchell moved around in the dark.
The 80-year-old sipped vodka from a paper cup inside apartment 206 at the Venetian Bayview condominiums on Friday night, only the light of a phone illuminating the unfamiliar space.
The power was out, and he was about to spend another night sleeping upright in his wheelchair. But at least he was dry.
He recalled the terror of two nights earlier.
When Hurricane Ian’s storm surge raged through downtown Naples on Wednesday, Mitchell watched as water seeped into the first-floor apartment he had called home for more than 15 years. He’d waited out Hurricane Irma in this apartment. Besides, he had no way to leave.
As fish passed his window, Mitchell thought the flooding had to stop soon.
That’s when neighbors picked him up and dragged him up the steps of the complex. He is 6 foot 3 and 285 pounds. It took an hour.

- Days after Hurricane Ian carved a path of destruction from Florida to the Carolinas, the dangers persisted, and even worsened in some places.
It was clear the road to recovery from this monster storm will be long and painful.
At least 68 people have been confirmed dead: 61 in Florida, four in North Carolina and three in Cuba.
With the death toll rising, Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said the federal government was ready to help in a huge way, focusing first on victims in Florida, which took the brunt of one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall in the United States.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden plan to visit the state on Wednesday.
Flooded roadways and washed-out bridges to barrier islands left many people isolated amid limited cellphone service and a lack of basic amenities such as water, electricity and the internet.

- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released aerial images from the coast around Fort Myers, Florida showing damage from Hurricane Ian.
Ian had come ashore Wednesday on Florida's Gulf Coast as a monstrous Category 4 hurricane, one of the strongest storms ever to hit the U.S.
It flooded homes on both the state's coasts, cut off the only road access to a barrier island, destroyed a historic waterfront pier and knocked out electricity to 2.6 million Florida homes and businesses — nearly a quarter of utility customers. Some 2.1 million of those customers remained in the dark days afterward.
In the Fort Myers area, the hurricane ripped homes from their slabs and deposited them among shredded wreckage. Businesses near the beach were completely razed, leaving twisted debris. Broken docks floated at odd angles beside damaged boats. Fires smoldered on lots where houses once stood.

Evacuation orders have been lifted in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, although officials are urging people to continue to shelter in place and not to emerge too early as workers deal with downed trees and power lines.
Some 500,000 people had no electricity this morning as crews raced to restore power and clear roads.
Our reporters and photographers have been cautiously documenting the aftermath around Tampa Bay. The Dali Museum's Wish Tree is among the damaged.
Much of the destruction seems mild compared to reports and images from our staff near Fort Myers.

DeSantis said he will ask the federal government to expand its emergency declaration to cover counties in central Florida that are also reporting damage.

- Hurricane Ian's most damaging winds began hitting Florida's southwest coast Wednesday, lashing the state with heavy rain and pushing a devastating storm surge after strengthening to just shy of the most dangerous Category 5 status.
Fueled by warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, Ian grew to a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane overnight with top winds of 155 mph (250 kph). That's according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm trudged on a track to make landfall north of the heavily populated Fort Myers area, which forecasters said could be inundated by a storm surge of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters).
"This is going to be a nasty nasty day, two days," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday morning, stressing that people in Ian's path along the coast should rush to the safest possible shelter and stay there.

The area is popular with retirees and tourists drawn to pristine white sandy beaches and long barrier islands, which forecasters said could be completely inundated.
Catastrophic storm surges could push as much as 12 to 18 feet (3.7 to 5.5 meters) of water over a nearly 100-mile (160-kilometer) stretch of coastline, from Bonita Beach north through Fort Myers and Charlotte Harbor to Englewood, the hurricane center warned. - Description
- The latex balloon sculptures hover in a room at The Gallery at Creative Pinellas, filling the cavernous space. In another space in the building, large-scale paintings on unstretched canvases layered with hand-written text beckon, while smaller colorful paintings fill the rest of the rooms.
These comprise “Darkmatter,” a showcase of St. Petersburg-based multidisciplinary artist Jason Hackenwerth’s work. It also includes a retrospective of 50 drawings and photographs from Hackenwerth’s exhibitions over the past 20 years. The gallery’s large space gave Hackenwerth his first opportunity to show the breadth of his artistic practice.

- Travel back to a low-rise time. Breathe in the Paris Hilton perfume. Sip the Vodka Red Bull. Wrap a skull scarf around your neck.
There. You have awoken in 2009. The country is barely climbing out of a recession and a little hoopla sounds tempting.
If you are a young adult in Tampa Bay, you might open your eyes behind aviators at the House of Hennessy, the storied Super Bowl home with a whole pirate ship. This rural estate once hosted everyone from Cuba Gooding Jr. to DJ Khaled.
The $2.5 million home at 19165 Geraci Road is now for sale, and columnist Stephanie Hayes took a look inside.

- For the second straight year, Tampa Bay picked up a win in Week 1 over the Dallas Cowboys. Chris Godwin and Donovan Smith both left the game early with injuries, but neither seem to be as serious as feared.

- Description
- Another US congressional delegation is visiting Taiwan as tensions with China remain high over its claims to the self-governed island.
Led by Florida Democrat Stephanie Murphy, the delegation met Thursday morning with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, whose administration China has relentlessly sought to deprive of diplomatic recognition and participation in international organizations.
Referring to China's military threats, Tsai said the delegation's visit "conveys rock solid support for Taiwan from the US Congress."
"Taiwan will not bow to pressure or coercion," Tsai said. "We will defend our democratic institutions and way of life. Taiwan will not back down."
Murphy replied that Congress "should advocate for greater Taiwanese participation in international organizations."

- Queen Elizabeth II: Longest-reigning UK Monarch dies
- Runtime

- Date posted

- Description
- Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a rock of stability across much of a turbulent century, has died. She was 96.
Buckingham Palace made the announcement in a statement.
A link to the almost-vanished generation that fought World War II, she was the only monarch most Britons have ever known, and her name defines an age: the modern Elizabethan Era. The impact of her loss will be huge, and unpredictable, both for the nation and for the monarchy, an institution she helped stabilize and modernize across decades of huge social change and family scandals.
With the death of the queen, her son Charles, automatically becomes monarch, even though the coronation might not take place for months. It is not known whether he will choose to call himself King Charles III or some other name.
