- Description
- The biggest active Texas wildfire is the 4,000-acre Chalk Mountain Fire about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
The fire, which began Monday afternoon, was just 10% contained after blackening about 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) as of midday Tuesday, and crews using bulldozers were digging containment lines while fire trucks and aircraft worked to extinguish the flames, the forest service said.
No injuries have been reported from the fires, and their causes were under investigation.
A combination of near-record- and record-high temperatures approaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) combined with breezes gusting as high as 30 mph (40-50 kph) and drought conditions to leave the region ripe for fire, the forest service said.
Eight structures are known to have been lost in that fire.
A red flag warning was issued for northern and central Texas.

The jurors also heard testimony from two students who were wounded as they sat in their English class when Cruz fired through a window in the door.
William Olson was writing an essay when "all of a sudden I hear a bunch of noise in the hallway. I did not know what it was."
Olson said he looked over and saw another freshman draped over a desk, blood pouring out of him as he died.
At that point, Olson said he and other students scrambled next to the teacher's desk.
"While I'm laying in front of the desk I realize there's blood all over me," he said. He had suffered arm and leg wounds.

- The U.S. House overwhelmingly approved legislation Tuesday to protect same-sex and interracial marriages amid concerns that the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade abortion access could jeopardize other rights criticized by many conservative Americans.
The vote was 267-157, with dozens of Republican joining Democrats for passage.
With a robust but lopsided debate, Democrats argued intensely in favor of enshrining marriage equality in federal law, while Republicans steered clear of openly rejecting gay marriage. Instead leading Republicans portrayed the bill as unnecessary amid other issues facing the nation.
Tuesday's election-year roll call was partly political strategy, forcing all House members, Republicans and Democrats, to go on the record with their views. It also reflected the legislative branch pushing back against an aggressive court that has sparked fears it may revisit apparently settled U.S. laws.

- The Biden administration is calling on people to exercise renewed caution about COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of getting booster shots for those who are eligible and wearing masks indoors as two new highly transmissible variants are spreading rapidly across the country.
The new variants, labeled BA.4 and BA.5, are offshoots of the omicron strain that has been been responsible for nearly all of the virus spread in the U.S. and are even more contagious than their predecessors. White House doctors stressed the importance of getting booster doses, even if you have recently been infected.
"Currently, many Americans are under vaccinated, meaning they are not up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines," said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Staying up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines provides the best protection against severe outcomes."

- U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday revealed the first image from NASA’s new space telescope - the deepest view of the cosmos ever captured.
The first image from the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope shows the farthest humanity has ever seen in both time and distance, closer to the dawn of the universe and the edge of the cosmos.
That image will be followed Tuesday by the release of four more galactic beauty shots from the telescope’s initial outward gazes.
Biden showed what NASA calls a “deep field" image. It's a shot filled with lots of stars, with massive galaxies in the foreground distorting the light of the objects behind, telescoping them and making faint and extremely distant galaxies visible.
Part of the image will be of light from not too long after the Big Bang.

As Biden was speaking on the White House South Lawn hailing the new legislation, Oliver demanded, "we need to do more than that."
The bill, passed after recent gun rampages in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, incrementally toughens requirements for young people to buy guns, denies firearms to more domestic abusers, and helps local authorities temporarily take weapons from people judged to be dangerous.
But the "celebration" came a week after a gunman in Highland Park, Illinois, killed seven people at an Independence Day parade, a stark reminder of the limitations of the new law in addressing the American phenomenon of mass gun violence.

The team used a scout snake named Dionysus — or Dion for short — in an area of the western Everglades.

Gov. DeSantis' office said it would appeal the ruling and he has pledged to "expand pro-life protections" in the future.
Meanwhile, a Kentucky judge temporarily blocked that state's near-total ban on abortions, allowing the procedures to resume after they were abruptly stopped when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week.
The cases in Florida and Kentucky reflect battles being waged in courts across the country after the Supreme Court said abortion was no longer protected under the federal constitution. "Now with Roe gone, let's be very clear, the health and life of women across this nation are now at risk," he said from the White House.
He added that "the court has done what it's never done before — expressly taking away a constitution right that is so fundamental to so many Americans," he said.
The White House has been preparing for this moment since a draft of the decision leaked in May. Officials have been huddling with state leaders, advocates, health care professionals and others to prepare for a future without Roe v. Wade.
Now Biden's plans will be tested in terms of politics and policy. Biden said his administration would defend a woman's right to cross state lines to seek an abortion.

"I speak as a mayor, a mom, and I speak for millions of Americans and America's mayors who are demanding that Congress do its job. And its job is to protect us, to protect our children from gun violence."
Speaker after speaker in Washington called on senators, who are seen as a major impediment to legislation, to act or face being voted out of office, especially given the shock to the nation's conscience after 19 children and two teachers were killed May 24 at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
"If our government can't do anything to stop 19 kids from being killed and slaughtered...

- A major media deal supported by Democratic fundraisers to recover lost ground among Hispanics by purchasing Spanish-language radio stations around the United States is stirring up opposition in Miami, where Cuban exiles describe it as an attempt to stifle conservative and anti-Communist voices.
The Latino Media Network, a startup founded by two political strategists who worked for President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, reached a $60 million deal to acquire 18 AM and FM stations in ten U.S. cities from Televisa/Univision.
The agreement announced last week still needs Federal Communications Commission approval.
The audiences in these markets are diverse, with Hispanics with roots all over Latin America listening in from Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, McAllen, Fresno and Las Vegas.
The network said it will focus on creating content that addresses the

- Description
- House Speaker #NancyPelosi says the House stands ready to consider a gun bill from the #Senate “if it’s life-saving and can make a difference.”
But she cautioned: “We cannot have subterfuge. We can’t have them say well, it’s about this and it’s about that. No, it’s about guns.”
This comes after the House approved a “red flag” bill Thursday that would allow families, police and others to ask federal courts to order the removal of firearms from people at extreme risk of harming themselves or others.
It's the Democratic-controlled chamber's latest response to U.S. mass shootings and likely stands little chance in the Senate.
Nineteen states and the District of Columbia currently have such “red flag" laws. Under the House bill, a judge could issue an order to temporarily remove and store the firearms until a hearing can be held, up to two weeks later, to determine whether the firearms should be returned or kept for...

- Academy Award–winning actor #MatthewMcConaughey took center stage at the White House briefing Tuesday to call on Congress to "reach a higher ground" and pass gun control legislation in honor of the children and teachers killed in last month's shooting rampage at an elementary school in his home town of #Uvalde, Texas.
In a highly personal 22-minute speech, #McConaughey offered a full-throated exhortation for a gridlocked Congress to pass gun reforms that can save lives without infringing on Second Amendment rights.
McConaughey used his star power to make an argument for legislation in a fashion that the Biden administration has not been able to, offering a clear connection to the small Texas town and offering vivid detail on the sheer loss of the 19 children and two teachers in the second worst mass school shooting in U.S. history.
"We want secure and safe schools and we want gun laws that won't make it so easy for the bad guys to get the damn g...

Sunday's pageant began with a military parade of 200 horses flanking a gilded carriage that transported the queen to her coronation 69 years ago.
The queen did not join her family in the royal box watching the pageant.
Boisterous, colorful dancers in the street celebrated the queen's life and highlighting Britain's diversity.
Ed Sheeran sang his hits and the cast of the stage show Mamma Mia performed "Dancing Queen" outside Buckingham Palace as a finale.
Organizers say the pageant was likely to be watched by 1 billion people around the world.

- Biden urges gun action to end the 'killing fields'

- Description
- U.S. President #JoeBiden has delivered an impassioned plea to Congress to act on gun control. In an address to the nation Thursday night, he called on lawmakers to restore limits on the sale of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines after a string of mass shootings in the country.
Speaking at the White House, #Biden acknowledged the stiff political headwinds as he sought to drive uppressure on Congress to pass stricter gun limits after such efforts failed following past attacks.
He said if Congress won't embrace all of his proposals, they must at least find compromise on other measures, like limiting access to firearms to those with mental health issues or raising the age to buy assault-style weapons from 18 to 21.
"How much more carnage are we willing to accept," Biden said after last week's shootings by an 18-year-old gunman, who killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and another attack on Wednes...

- The House is swiftly working to put its stamp on gun legislation in response to mass shootings in Texas and New York by 18-year-old assailants who used semi-automatic rifles to kill 31 people, including 19 children.
Partisan positions were clear at a Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday on legislation that would raise the age limit for purchasing semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21.
The bill also would make it a federal offense to import, manufacture or possess large-capacity magazines and would create a grant program to buy back such magazines.
It builds on the administration's executive action banning fast-action “bump-stock” devices and “ghost guns” that are assembled without serial numbers.
The Democratic legislation, called the Protecting Our Kids Act, was quickly added to the legislative docket after last week's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. A vote by the full House could come as early as next week.

The exhibition is co-organized by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. It is co-curated by Katherine Pill and Melinda Watt. After the exhibition ends its run here, it will travel to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, in 2023.

- Description
- It should have been the first day of a joyous week for Robb Elementary School students — the start of summer break. Instead on Monday, the first two of 19 children murdered inside a classroom were being remembered at funeral visitations.
The gathering for 10-year-old Amerie Jo Garza was at Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home in Uvalde, Texas, directly across from the grade school where the children, along with two teachers, were shot to death on Tuesday before the gunman himself was killed.
On Monday, some mourners at Amerie's visitation wore lilac or lavender shades of purple — Amerie's favorites — at the request of her father, Angel Garza. Many carried in flowers, including purple ones.
Esther Rubio called Uvalde home for 48-years. She now lives in San Antonio.
She is a friend of the gunman's grandmother, who was shot in the face by her grandson before he stormed the school.

- Steven Peterman started The Sketchbook Project with a group of friends in 2006, while he was studying printmaking at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus. Through social media, they spread the word and sent participants blank sketchbooks, which were then returned and became part of the permanent collection.
Submission fees helped fund the project, which moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2009. In 2010, the project received 20,000 submissions.
In 2020, Peterman created the nonprofit Brooklyn Art Library, which housed the collection. Since its inception, there have been 19 volumes of the project, with submissions from around the world.
Peterman and his wife, Sara, moved to St. Petersburg a few years ago to be closer to family, and in 2019 opened Pete’s General Store in Historic Uptown. They eventually moved to a larger space, now called Pete’s Bagels in the Grand Central District.
