- Seventy-five miles, 90 driving minutes and two counties separate downtown St. Petersburg and Arcadia, a city of around 8,000 deep in the state’s rural interior.
Welcome to the new District 16, one sprawling puzzle piece of Florida’s new congressional map, which is expected to give Republicans an electoral advantage after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it into law last week.
To explore the reworked district’s competing priorities and lifestyles, the Tampa Bay Times drove a slice of the new District 16 this month, from downtown St. Petersburg, to Bradenton and Palmetto, to Arcadia and Wauchula more than an hour east.
With stops for interviews, gas and lunch, the trip took about 11 hours. Read more about what we learned here: https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/elections/2026/05/10/florida-redistricting-desantis-election-lawsuit-st-petersburg-bradenton-arcadia-wauchula/

Districtwide, the number of students per teacher has grown more than 18% in the last six school years.

- Description
- Hummus samples, K-pop merch and vintage Florida oddities now fill the parking lot of Derby Lane every weekend.
The casino and former dog track has become the site of a popular farmers and flea market — but that isn't the only attraction coming to this repurposed space.
For nearly a century, Derby Lane was known for greyhound racing, it even became the backdrop for films like Ocean’s 11.
Now its sprawling parking lot is filled with tents, vendors and a new kind of crowd.
We took a peek into how this historic site has been reimagined for foodies and bargain shoppers. Read the story: https://www.tampabay.com/life-culture/entertainment/things-to-do/2026/03/23/derby-lane-st-petersburg-farmers-market-flea-history-development-tampa-rally/

- Description
- On a sunny morning in early January, real estate reporter Rebecca Liebson and two friends set out to test the limits of St. Pete’s street grid by walking the entire length of Central Avenue from Tampa Bay to Treasure Island Beach.
In a world obsessed with optimization, walking has become a chore. It’s something you do simply to close the circle on your Apple Watch, Liebson writes.
But for generations, walking was not just a necessity — it was a form of leisure.
Equipped with a beach towel, a water bottle and a disposable camera, they made the nine mile trek, wtih Liebson documenting what they saw along the way.

- Christopher Torres was looking for more work after his hours were cut on a project in Colorado.
Torres, a 39-year-old union member of Oklahoma City’s Ironworkers Local 48, hit the road. He drove 21 hours to St. Petersburg and walked into what was left of the dome with a bag of tools.
All he really needed was a harness and a helmet.
His job: Take the old work net and brackets off, put new brackets on; unfold the Teflon-coated fabric roof panel, pull it open with a pulley and tie it down with a bunch of straps. It was a workout in the late summer heat.

- Bees are Florida’s backbone, but the state is becoming less pollinator-friendly

- Description
- Florida is a bee paradise — so much so that out-of-state beekeepers and their pollinators often winter here.
But honeybees aren’t the only pollinators around. The state is home to more than 300 local bee species that vary in size, looks and food preferences.
Across the board, these bees boost Florida’s agriculture industry and prop up our environment.
But in recent years, Florida has become less friendly to managed honeybees and native bees. They’re facing a laundry list of threats that could spell trouble for Florida’s way of life.
