What happens here matters everywhere. Donations from readers help our journalists continue to keep our community safe during disasters like a hurricane.

- What have Juvenile Welfare Board members said about CEO search? Texts offer a glimpse
- Runtime

- Description
- As the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County zeroes in on Glen Gilzean as its next CEO, board members have insisted during public meetings that the appointment is not political.
But text messages reviewed by the Times shed light on how some members of the board sought to drum up support for Gilzean in political circles.
In February, Brian Aungst Jr., a gubernatorial appointee to the board, texted a handful of well-connected Republicans about how votes for Gilzean were “gettable” from county officials and that he would “get it done.”

- Hillsborough has a class size problem. Leaders don’t see an easy fix
- Runtime

- Description
- Hillsborough has a class size issue, much like other school districts in the state.
But with fines and penalties nonexistent, enforcement for keeping headcounts under legal limits is largely toothless.
A Times analysis found that in the past two years, Hillsborough has had more than 40 of its schools’ class size averages exceed the legal limits.
Districtwide, the number of students per teacher has grown more than 18% in the last six school years.
And the fix is far from easy.
