- Description
- The CEO of TikTok made a rare, high-profile appearance Thursday before a U.S. Congressional committee to make the case for why the hugely popular video-sharing app shouldn’t be banned.
Shou Zi Chew’s testimony comes at a crucial time for the company, which has acquired 150 million American users but is under increasing pressure from U.S. officials concerned about data security and user safety.
TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have been swept up in a wider geopolitical battle between Beijing and Washington over trade and technology.
Chew, a 40-year-old Singapore native, told the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce that TikTok prioritizes the safety of its young users and denies allegations that the app is a national security risk.
"We spent a lot of time adopting measures to protect teenagers. Many of those measures are firsts for the social media industry," Chew told lawmakers.

- Rob Stirling has been working out for more than 40 years, but only added push-ups to his exercise routine because injuries forced him to find a replacement for the bench press.
Now, no one in the world can do more push-ups than Stirling in 60 minutes.
On Feb. 24 at Tampa’s Powerhouse Gym Athletic Club, Stirling completed 3,264 push-ups in one hour, giving him the unofficial record until Guinness World Records certifies his attempt, which was filmed from multiple angles.
The previous record of 3,206, according to Guinness, was achieved by Australian Lucas Helmke on Nov. 17, 2022.
Stirling, an insurance agent who was born and raised in Tampa, said Helmke is half his age.
“It’s probably not going to sit really well with him that a 60-year-old has the record,” Stirling said. “So, I hope he does come back and he’s a competitor. And if he does break it, I’ll challenge him to a head-to-head competition.”

- Authorities in Florida were searching on Sunday for two missing boaters, who are believed drowned in a lake near the Legoland theme park.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the two men jumped into Lake Eloise on Saturday evening to save a third person from their group, a woman, who was struggling in the water after jumping in with the boat's anchor.
The men became separated from the boat and disappeared.
The woman was rescued by sheriff’s deputies after a girl on the boat dialed 911 on a cellphone.
The lake is beside Legoland in Winter Haven, but the incident was not connected with the theme park.

- Description
- Farmworkers were leading a five-day, 45-mile (72-kilometer) trek on foot this week from one of the poorest communities in Florida to a mansion-lined, oceanfront town that is one of the richest in an effort to pressure retailers to leverage their purchasing power for better worker pay and working conditions.
The farmworkers said they were marching to highlight the Fair Food Program, which has enlisted companies like McDonald’s, Walmart, Taco Bell and Whole Foods to use their clout with growers to ensure better working conditions and wages for farmworkers. The farmworkers hoped to use the march to pressure other companies, like Publix, Wendy’s and Kroger, to join the program that started in 2011.
The march began Tuesday from the farming community of Pahokee, one of the poorest in Florida, where the median household income is more than $30,000. The march's launching point was a camp where farmworkers were coerced into working for barely any pay by a labor con...

The story of a teacher who openly harassed students — to include singling out their race and gender — provides insight into the discrimination students can face within their own schools. It shows how schools can respond tepidly, choosing to tolerate a teacher like Harvey while students in formative years are left feeling unheard and without a sense of recourse.

He's traveled the country talking about how America should be more like Florida.
This session, that means issues like telling teachers what pronouns they can use for students, making guns more available to Floridians and keeping keeping immigrants who are in the country illegally out of the state.

The SpaceX capsule and its four astronauts had to wait 65 feet (20 meters) from the orbiting lab, as flight controllers in California scrambled to come up with a software fix.
It's the same problem that cropped up shortly after Thursday's liftoff. Although all 12 hooks on the capsule appeared to be fine, the switch for one of them malfunctioned.
SpaceX Mission Control urged patience, telling the U.S., Russian and Emerati astronauts they could stay in this holding pattern for up to two hours.
Once new software commands were relayed, the astronauts received the go-ahead to proceed. In the end, the linkup occurred an hour late as the capsule and space station soared 260 miles (420 kilometers) above the coast of Somalia.

The president sees a chance to use Social Security and Medicare to drive a wedge between GOP lawmakers and their base of older voters who rely on these government programs for income and health insurance. Biden is trying to lay the groundwork for an expected reelection campaign announcement this spring.
White House aides have been using the votes and words of Republican lawmakers to make their case that Social Security and Medicare benefits are under threat, while GOP leaders say their statements are being mischaracterized.
Even as Biden said his focus is on getting things done, his speech in Tampa and remarks the day before in Wisconsin showed how he's trying to rally the public to his side now that Republicans control the House. I...

- Big John, world’s largest triceratops, finds home at Glazer Children’s Museum
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The 26-foot-long dinosaur made history when it was first discovered in South Dakota in 2014. And it made history again in 2021 when it fetched a record $7.7 million at an auction in Paris, the most ever paid for ancient bones that weren’t a T. rex. The winning bid came from Tampa entrepreneur Sidd Pagidipati, chairperson of Ayon Capitol and Better Health Group. He is lending Big John to the museum for the next three years.
The auction made international news because of the stunning sight of the triceratops once it had been excavated from the rock and because missing parts were filled in with 3D printing. The 10-foot-tall dino the size of a moving van is one of the most complete sets of fossil remains ever unearthed, roughly 60% whole.

A group of Jacksonville residents and civil rights organizations successfully sued the city last year, alleging the council's redistricting plan amounted to racial gerrymandering by packing Black communities into a handful of districts.
A U.S. district court judge last fall ruled in their favor and ordered the maps redrawn.
Advocates said the city returned with more of the same, and in December the same court ordered that a map proposed by the advocates be used for Jac...
