- Description
- For years, Mark Hager’s job as an observer aboard New England fishing boats made him a marked man, seen as a meddling cop on the ocean, counting and scrutinizing every cod, haddock and flounder to help set crucial quotas.
On one particularly perilous voyage, he was met on the dock at 4 a.m. by a hostile captain cleaning his AK-47 assault rifle. And for the next 12 days at sea, no crew member even uttered a single word to him.
Now Hager is working to replace such federally-mandated observers with high-definition cameras affixed to fishing boat masts. From the safety of his office, Hager uses a laptop to watch hours of footage of crew members hauling the day’s catch aboard and measuring it with long sticks marked with thick black lines. And he’s able to zoom in on every fish to verify its size and species, noting whether it is kept or flung overboard in accordance with the law.

- The U.S. Holiday shopping season officially began on Friday morning, known as Black Friday.
The Best Buy Galleria in Houston, Texas opened it's doors at 5am Central Standard Time (1100GMT) and a long line of bargain hunters made their way in.
The outlook for retailers is uncertain this year, as inflation is weighing on consumers.
Elevated prices for food, rent, gasoline and other household costs have taken a toll on shoppers.
As a result, many are reluctant to spend unless there is a big sale and are being more selective with what they will buy - in many cases, trading down to cheaper stuff and less expensive stores.
Shoppers are also dipping more into their savings, turning increasingly to “buy now, pay later” services like Afterpay that allow users to pay for items in installments, as well as running up their credit cards at a time when the Federal Reserve is hiking rates to cool the U.S. economy and slow down infla...

Travel experts predict this year's crowds to rival those of 2019, the last Thanksgiving before the pandemic. Remote work is allowing some travelers to leave earlier or return home later, spreading out the holiday rush over more days than usual.
Transportation Security Administration screened nearly 2.33 million travelers on Sunday, surpassing the 2.32 million on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2019.
AAA predicts that nearly 55 million people in the U.S. will travel at least 50 miles from home this week, an increase over last year and only 2% less than in 2019.
Airlines say they're ready for crowds and aim to avoid a repeat of widespread delays and cancellations over some holiday weekends in late spring and early summer.

It's the first time a capsule has visited the moon since NASA's Apollo program 50 years ago, and represents a huge milestone in the $4.1 billion test flight that began last Wednesday.
The close approach of 81 miles (130 kilometers) occurred as the crew capsule and its three wired-up dummies were on the far side of the moon. Because of a half-hour communication blackout, flight controllers in Houston did not know if the critical engine firing went well until the capsule emerged from behind the moon, 232,000 miles (370,000 kilometers) from Earth.
The capsule's cameras sent back a picture of the world _ a tiny blue orb surrounded by blackness.
The capsule accelerated well beyond 5,000 mph (8,000 kph) as it regained radio contact, NASA said.Less than an ...

Speaking during a visit to Bali for the G-20 summit, Biden said Republicans were likely to take control of the House, putting them in position to block any such legislation.
Although Democrats will maintain, or even expand, their narrow majority in the Senate, some members of his party are unwilling to sidestep filibuster rules to pass an abortion law.
“I don't think they can expect much of anything,” Biden said.

The property fell into disrepair over the years and was closed in 2017 after an electrical fire.
The property's future is unclear after voters on Tuesday rejected plans for a high-rise hotel and condo tower.

The rare November hurricane had already led officials to shut down airports and theme parks and order evacuations in areas that included former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club.
Authorities warned that Nicole’s storm surge could further erode many beaches hit by Hurricane Ian in September. The sprawling storm is forecast to head into Georgia and the Carolinas later Thursday and Friday, dumping heavy rain across the region.

- Description
- Striding onstage with his children and wife Casey, DeSantis made his victory speech in Tampa.
"Thank you for honoring us with a win for the ages." He thanked two historically Democratic strongholds, Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County, for their support in his landslide win.
Then, standing before a giant American flag, he compared Florida to the "failed leadership in Washington."
"I believe the survival of the American experiment requires a revival of true American principles," he said. "Florida has proved that it can be done."
Then red, white and blue confetti rained down onto the stage.

- Description
- As of 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, statewide results showed DeSantis had a roughly 14-point lead over Crist. That margin, if it holds, would be considered a mammoth win in the state of Florida, a state accustomed to razor-thin margins. The Associated Press called the race just a few minutes after 8 p.m., almost immediately after the last of the state’s polls in the Central time zone closed.

- Description
- A team of four explorers recently completed a daring, nearly 130-mile canoe trek across the Florida Everglades to assess human impact on the world's largest subtropical wilderness.
The explorers started at the mouth of the Harney River in the Gulf of Mexico on October 27 and ended in downtown Miami on November 2.
The 2022 Willoughby Expedition team retraced a canoe journey that was first completed by explorer and scientist Hugh de Laussat Willoughby 125 years ago in 1897.
Dr. Tracie Baker served as the lead scientist to sample and test for the same water constituents that Willoughby did more than a century ago.
Willoughby's charts aided in creating the first accurate maps of the region, and his water sampling provided the baseline water chemistry for the Everglades.
The team also tracked water pollutants that Willoughby couldn't have foreseen, including microplastics, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pestici...

- US President Joe Biden pilloried Republicans up and down ballots across the nation as election deniers who revelled in political violence, while his predecessor, Donald Trump, urged voters to oppose “growing left-wing tyranny" on the final Sunday before midterm elections that could reshape Washington's balance of power.
Wrapping up a five-state, four-day campaign swing with an evening rally at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York, Biden championed Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.
She's locked in a tight race with Rep. Lee Zeldin, who is looking to become the state's first GOP governor since George Pataki left office in 2006.
Biden also used the appearance to blast Trump's economic record.
"He's the first president in America since Herbert Hoover to lose more jobs than he got than he had when he came to office," Biden said.
Meanwhile, Trump campaigned in Miami with Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

After all the protests and the noise — including a faculty senate vote of no confidence in the secretive process — Sasse walked into the post after a lengthy Q&A with trustees. The vote was unanimous. Next up, Sasse must win approval from the system Board of Governors.

- Biden campaigns for Crist and Demings in Florida
- Runtime

- Description
- US President Joe Biden on Tuesday lashed out at Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, zeroing in on a potential 2024 GOP presidential contender as he campaigned for Democrats facing uphill fights in next week's midterm election.
In a final-week sprint for Democrats before Election Day, Biden will campaign in New Mexico on Thursday, California on Friday and Pennsylvania on Saturday. By many accounts, Democratic control of Congress and several statehouses is in peril, and Biden is trying to stem that tide.
In Florida, a state famously popular among retirees, he focused on federal programs for elderly people and the less well-to-do. He declared that the current crop of GOP candidates "ain't your father's Republican party" and said that he prayed God would deliver his opponents "some enlightenment."
After those remarks in Hallandale Beach, he headlined a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist in Golden Beach. He capped the evening with a...

- Mourners in Haiti flocked to a cemetery in the capital, kicking off Voodoo's annual two-day festival of the dead.
Some people lit candles and stoked small fires as they evoked the spirit of Baron Samedi, known in Haitian Voodoo as the guardian of the dead.
Voodoo was brought to Haiti by enslaved Africans and blends in elements of Catholicism.
The government lifted sanctions on the religion in 2003.
Families cleaned the graves of their loved ones and left flowers and food at a neighborhood cemetery in the Mexican capital.
Day of the Dead commemorations have remained important in Mexican culture, dating back hundreds of years to the Aztecs.
In Peru, it was the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began that mourners could take part in the tradition without restrictions.
In that country's tradition, Nov. 1 is mainly dedicated to children who have passed away and Nov. 2 is dedicated to adults.

- Residents of a Miami Beach building on the same street where a condominium collapse killed nearly 100 people were forced to evacuate on Thursday evening after officials determined the structure was unsafe and gave orders to leave.
Miami Beach spokesperson Melissa Berthier said around 4 p.m. Thursday that the city planned to post an unsafe structure notice and order residents of the 14-story Port Royale building to vacate immediately.
Around 5 p.m., the condo board sent residents a mandatory notice to vacate by 7 p.m., the Miami Herald reported.
Residents of the Port Royale said City of Miami Beach officials informed them Wednesday that the building would need to be evacuated, but the notice to leave immediately was not delivered until Thursday, WPLG-TV reported.
A report from the building's structural engineer prompted the evacuation notice of the 164-unit structure at 6969 Collins Avenue, which is in the process of undergoing a 50-ye...

The defense, meanwhile, remained unable to play a sound game through all four quarters.
