“I remember the first time I held my son when he was born,” Gonzalez said. “I promised that everything that I went through, you won’t go through, and I’m going to try to make sure that I do my best in setting you up for success.”
That promise now fuels nearly every decision she makes for her 4-year-old son, Jairo.
But Gonzalez fears that promise and the future she has worked to build could become harder to keep as Michigan lawmakers debate the future of a child care assistance program thousands of working families rely on.
A growing budget battle in Lansing has reignited concerns about what advocates are calling a looming “childcare cliff” as federal pandemic-era funding dries up and state lawmakers weigh major changes to how Michigan funds childcare subsidies.
At the center of the debate is Michigan’s Child Development and Care program, c...

- A Michigan House bill has been introduced in the legislature that would expand DNA testing post-guilty convictions.
Sponsored by Rep. Kara Hope (D - Holt), the bill would update the state's post-conviction DNA testing law, expanding access to DNA testing, which could lead to exonerations of wrongfully convicted individuals.
The state's post-conviction DNA testing law hasn't been updated since 2001, and DNA testing technology has progressed significantly since then, which led to the bill being drafted.
DNA testing technology can now identify profiles from much smaller and more degraded samples, which could lead to better identification of criminals.
Guilty pleas account for around 95% of felony convictions nationwide, while 18% of exonerees pleaded guilty to crimes they did not commit.
Jessa Webber of the Innocence Project told News Channel 3 lesser sentences and pressure to plead guilty contribute to those numbers.

- Description
- On Saturday, Kalamazoo celebrated Juneteenth, with the goal of turning the holiday into something more than a celebration.
The Bronson Park event was sponsored by the Rootead Enrichment Center, a group that offers support for new mothers and creates youth opportunities.
Alongside more than 70 vendors, the stage featured a variety of artistic styles, including spoken word, dance and traditional West African music.
Organizers tell us they wanted to allow the community to show off their talents and support each other in the heart of downtown.
"For me, it's just a moment to really just acknowledge that we have come a long way, but there's still more to do," Rootead Youth Enrichment Coordinator William Stewart said. "...while still also celebrating the fact that we have a lot of say and more freedom in where we're at now, it's always a good thing for hope."
This is the fifth year for the official Juneteenth celebration in Kala...

- Did Michigan beat the Wright Brothers? The Story of Augustus Moore Herring

- Description
- At the turn of the 20th century, there was something in the water in Michigan.
Year after year, inventors and businessmen made countless innovations, with natives like Horace and John Dodge and William Upjohn paving the way for the technology of today.
Hidden among those trailblazers is Augustus Moore Herring, a boat engineer who turned his work from the water to the skies.
He experimented with aviation technology in the late 1800s, and according to one Michigan historian, he was the first person in history to fly in a powered machine.
Stuart Boekeloo believes the St. Joseph man deserves the credit as the first in flight at Silver Beach on a windy day in 1898.
At first, Herring built gliders for researcher Octave Chanute while working for the Truscott Boat Company. But he had bigger goals: he wanted to see a human fly.
Herring attached a two-cylinder compressed air engine to his and Chanute’s designs to cre...

- More than six weeks after the entire Wildwood Off Main apartment complex was condemned, residents are taking their experience and turning it into something all tenants can learn from.
Ever since notices went up on every door, residents have been searching for answers– where to go, who to talk to, and how to find help.
Property owner Peter Slaugh said repairs for decaying decks and staircases are on the way for tenants, after the Kalamazoo Area Building Authority (KABA) approved permits Friday.
But this progress comes more than 40 days in, with residents still living in limbo.
Weeks of chaos and confusion has lit a fire in tenants, who’ve spent the last few weeks attending various county and township meetings, learning more about how local government works and who to turn to.
Residents have also been hosting an internal town hall and keeping extensive records in a Google Drive, from timelines to resources.

- June 19th is also Juneteenth, which signifies when the final African-American slaves in the United States learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.
It became a federal holiday in 2021, and it's celebrated strongly in West Michigan.
In Kalamazoo, there will be festivities in Bronson Park from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, including food, dancing, and music.
This Juneteenth is a reminder of how far Black Americans have come, but a difficult reminder that there is still a long way to go for equality.
This week, a Black teenager was handcuffed and detained in the Washington Heights neighborhood in Battle Creek.
The boy's family accused the officer of racial profiling, and the Battle Creek Police chief stands by his actions.

- As data centers pop up in more places across the state, many want to see rules to constrain the projects.
Now, Michigan Senate Democrats are wading in with a move to regulate facilities across the state.
Drawing from lessons learned in other states, the group of Senators say they're charting a different path with seven bills.
“We're building the economy of the future, but in a way that protects our environment, strengthens our communities, and ensures working people share in the successes," Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) said.
One bill would put in place permitting requirements for entities using 550,000 gallons of water per day, with a daily cap of 2 million gallons.
Water infrastructure upgrade costs could not be passed onto residents, as well.

The park is in its pre-production trial stages as it works to hire more staff members. 500 employees have already been hired, and they're looking for hundreds more, according to BlueOval CEO Scott Davis.
"We are on pace to have 800 employees by end of year," Davis told News Channel 3. "That's a key step for our ultimate number of 1,700 employees on the site."
The park is focusing its hiring efforts on the local workforce, as 70 percent of employees are from the Albion and Battle Creek areas.

"It allows them to engage on a daily basis with their family members and community stakeholders, but also as we have outreach into the community, whether it's volunteering events, such as tree plantings, or also volunteering for food pantries, or ...
