- The search for a 16-year-old boy who went missing in Gun Lake was temporarily suspended Thursday night, according to Michigan State Police (MSP), after crews spent a second day looking for him around Orangeville Island where witnessed said he went under water and did not emerge.
The teenager was last seen Wednesday evening, according to MSP.
News Channel 3 crews on scene have observed numerous boats, dive teams, drones, and a helicopter searching around Orangeville Island, in the southern part of the lake.

- The City of Kalamazoo has officially removed a large homeless encampment on North Edwards Street, citing right-of-way enforcement.
Now, those removed from the encampment are looking for a place to go.
There are several resources they can access to find short-term housing that can potentially transition into long-term housing. That includes Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries and Integrated Services of Kalamazoo (ISK), which are working to accommodate those who need shelter.
Both organizations have outreach teams connecting with people who are affected, according to the Kalamazoo County Continuum of Care, which is offering coordinated entry through local partners to connect people with available shelter space and other housing programs.

Dozens of people living in tents on North Edwards Street were given until 2 p.m. Thursday to pack up and move or be removed, according to city officials.
News Channel 3 spoke with Tim, who has been homeless for more than two decades.
Last week, Tim found himself living on the street. Not long after, an eviction notice was zip-tied to his tent.
"I have always lived in shelters, this is the first time I have been on the street," Tim said. "I was told this was a safe place to be at and now I can't live here either."

Information from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shows the plane, a two seat, fixed-wing single engine aircraft is owned by Matthew Thorne, though it is not yet clear whether Thorne is one of the two people on the plane when it crashed.
The plane crashed "under unknown circumstances" into a corn field near the Thrall Lake Airport Thursday around 7 p.m., according to Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers and the FAA's preliminary report.
Emergency responders took the two people on board to the hospital with serious injuries Wednesday.

An MSP spokesperson confirmed Wednesday a teen went missing in the water, and Thursday, troopers confirmed he is a 16-year-old boy who they believe drowned.
As of Wednesday afternoon, crews have not found a body yet. Sgt. Carlos Fossati with MSP Wayland Post told News Channel 3 that murky and mucky water conditions have made it difficult for divers to work through everything.
Crews searched through Wednesday night into until about 1 a.m. Thursday and started up again when visibility improved around 9 a.m.
All boat launches to the lake are shut down while the search continues, troopers said, and all boat owners with lake access are being asked to stay off the water.

- A Kalamazoo man will be sentenced for shooting and seriously injuring a Kalamazoo Township Police officer in March 2025.
A jury on Wednesday found Kenyun Smith, 25, guilty of assault with intent to commit murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing police officers and several felony firearm charges, according to Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Getting.
This comes over a year after Smith's girlfriend called 911 on March 27, 2025, telling dispatchers that he had pulled a gun on her at a home on Kendall Avenue.
Smith then ran nearly three miles away to the Kalamazoo Public Schools Administration building on Howard Street, where a shootout took place, according to the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.

A News Channel 3 crew on the scene observed numerous boats in the water searching around Orangeville Island, which is located in the southern region of the lake.

Drivers are forced to detour at Lincoln Road near Holland after an aging stormwater culvert maintained by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) failed under the road.
Allegan County's Drain Commissioner Chris Machiela says it's a sign of the corrugated metal material reaching the end of its life.
"At the bottom of those things after a while, they tend to rust out and rot," Machiela said.
MDOT blocked off the site before any cars struck the sinkhole.

A jury on Wednesday found Kenyun Smith, 25, guilty of assault with intent to commit murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing police officers and several felony firearm charges, according to Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Getting.
This comes over a year after Smith's girlfriend called 911 on March 27, 2025, telling dispatchers that he had pulled a gun on her at a home on Kendall Avenue.
Smith then ran nearly three miles away to the Kalamazoo Public Schools Administration building on Howard Street, where a shootout took place, according to the Kalamazoo Township Police Department.
Prosecutors say Smith not only hurt himself and Kalamazoo Township Officer Evan Finch, but he put the community in danger too.

- FEMA's denial of Michigan's appeal for tornado disaster aid after the March 6 tornadoes does not mean survivors in Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties are out of options for help, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Separate from FEMA, the SBA activated its own disaster declaration for Branch, Cass and St. Joseph counties this spring, according to a spokesperson, offering low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofits with tornado damage.
"The interest rate for most homeowners and renters is as low as 2.875%," said Brian Beard, a public affairs specialist with the SBA's Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience.
A $25,000 loan at that rate, spread over 30 years, would run about $108 a month, according to Beard.
The official deadline to apply for SBA disaster relief was June 29, but Beard said a 60-day grace period is extending that deadline to Aug. 28.

- A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday, with the powerful quake shaking as far as neighboring Ecuador, prompting evacuations and killing at least 111 people.
The epicenter of the earthquake has been reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in San Jose Del Palmar, a municipality in the Choco region with around 4,800 people, located around 250 miles west of Colombia's capital of Bogotá.
The USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of 66 miles and was felt as far as Ecuador and Panama, though minimal damage was reported there.
Local officials confirmed at least 40 people were killed in the Risaralda region and 27 people in the Valle del Cauca region. Risaralda is where the hard-hit city of Pereira is located and Valle del Cauca is where Colombia's third-biggest city of Cali is located.
The governor said at least three of those killed in Valle del Cauca were children.
