Lake sturgeon, sometimes called "living dinosaurs," have been around since before the Great Lakes even formed. Now, researchers say these massive prehistoric fish may live far longer than previously thought.

- The National Blueberry Festival began Thursday in South Haven, bringing visitors to local farms and businesses for a tradition that has continued for more than six decades.
At DeGrandchamp Farms, blueberries stretched across the fields as visitors picked fruit, shopped and sampled blueberry-themed treats.
“I just tried the blueberry salsa. I’d never heard of such a thing,” Natalie Roedemeir, who was visiting from St. Louis, Missouri, said. “It was really good.”
Rick Oberle, who's visiting from Columbia, Missouri, told News Channel 3 he and others were eating blueberry ice cream and taking fruit home.
“We’re having blueberry ice cream. And it’s delicious,” Oberle said. “We loaded up our car with blueberries we’re going to bring back home to Missouri.”

Throughout her 20 years running for office, Rogers said she’s seen skepticism surrounding the election process really ramp up, and she’s now working to restore confidence in the process by making sure no questions go unanswered.
“I think it's important to kind of lay out the facts and lay out people's rights,” Rogers said. “We really want to get people the information that they're asking for.”
Rogers will be joined by Michigan Deputy Secretary of State, Aghogho Edevbie, and other community experts to provide a behind the scenes look at how Michigan’s elections are run.

- Progressive candidates have garnered support across the country in Democratic primaries, prevailing over moderates.
That was true in Michigan in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary for former public health official Abdul El-Sayed, and also in the U.S. House District 7 primary for Will Lawrence.
"A lot of rank-and-file ordinary Democrats who are not the establishment, they are eager for candidates, officeholders who are going to fight, who are gonna be combative," Grand Valley State University political science professor Don Zinman said.
Lawrence appeared with fellow democrats at a press conference Thursday and explained what he thinks propelled progressive wins.
"We're seeing a movement of voters and candidates who are declaring themselves to be unbought and our standing alongside working people against these entrenched economic powers," Lawrence said.
There is concern among some Democrats, however, about whether the candi...

Political science professor John Clark of Western Michigan University said El-Sayed’s performance across the region stood out because his support was not limited to one type of community.
“I think that a lot of folks, and I’d probably be one of them, were surprised that El-Sayed did as well as he did across the entire state,” Clark said. “His success wasn’t just concentrated in the college towns or in this place or that place.”
El-Sayed won five of the seven most populated counties in the News Channel 3 viewing area, including Kent, Ottawa and Kalamazoo.

A major theme of the remarks was the need for stronger data-sharing between state and federal governments. Vance said the federal government often lacks visibility into who ultimately receives benefits administered by states, and he urged Congress to require states to share information more consistently.
Chairman Andrew Ferguson, who also spoke at the event, said fraud has been enabled by weak penalties and outdated systems. He argued that better technology and shared databases could prevent many fraudulent claims before money leaves the government.
“Data is the enemy of fraud,” Ferguson said, adding that simple verification measures could save taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.

- Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, defeating U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in a massive victory for the party’s progressive wing in a battleground state.
The real test of El-Sayed’s and progressives’ strength will now come in a November matchup against Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman who ran unopposed for the GOP nomination. The seat is pivotal to Democrats’ chances of flipping the Senate and El-Sayed will face the challenge of uniting a divided Democratic base after a bruising primary.
The race remained tight throughout Tuesday night, with a winner not declared until early Wednesday. In his final remarks at a primary night party before the race was called, El-Sayed said “tomorrow we begin to mend fences.”
El-Sayed’s campaign said Stevens called to concede Wednesday.
El-Sayed’s win represents a significant shift for the Democratic Party; in 2018 he lost the gubernatorial p...

"We knew that this was going to be a close race, and that's exactly what we've got," Stevens said. "I am feeling fired up, and you should be too."
The closely watched and costly primary drew national attention because the winner will face Republican Mike Rogers in a race expected to help determine control of the U.S. Senate. The contest also emerged as a key test of the Democratic Party's establishment and progressive factions.

- Congressman John James is now the Republican nominee in the race for Michigan's governor, fending off a challenge from businessman Perry Johnson.
Johnson, while addressing his supporters Tuesday night, said he was proud of the coalition they created, and what he called a movement for government efficiency.
He did not directly concede to James in his speech, as the votes were not all in.
"The early results aren't what we hoped for, but we have united conservatives to create the MEGA MOVEMENT," Johnson said on Facebook. "...We will continue to demand the MEGA audit, income tax elimination, property tax reform, and skepticism towards data centers!"
He continued, "The career politicians and special interests may win tonight, but they will not win the future. We will make Michigan great again!"
According to Johnson, his campaign brought the different movements of the Republican Party, and he feels the desire for more transpare...

- Good Morning Minute🗳️
Moderate candidate U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and progressive favorite Abdul El-Sayed were in a tight race for Michigan's Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
Both addressed supporters, saying the vote count could continue well into the day.
"We knew that this was going to be a close race, and that's exactly what we've got," Stevens said. "I am feeling fired up, and you should be too."
The bitter and expensive campaign attracted national attention not just because the general election for the seat will help decide which party controls the Senate. It also became the most notable proxy battle between the Democratic Party's establishment and progressive wings.
Candidates from the left-flank — including democratic socialists — have found surprising success in the party's U.S. House primaries, including in New York and Denver. Those races, however, were in deep...

- Michigan voters head to the polls Tuesday in one of the nation’s most closely watched primary elections, with U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Michigan) seeking her party’s nomination for the open U.S. Senate seat against former public health official Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
Polls close statewide at 8 p.m., and political observers across the country are watching because the outcome could shape not only Michigan’s representation in Washington, but also the future direction of the Democratic Party.
Stevens currently represents Michigan’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before serving in Congress, she worked in the Obama administration, where she was part of the team that helped oversee the federal response to the auto industry’s financial crisis.
Throughout her time in Congress, Stevens has centered her message on growing American manufacturing, supporting union jobs, strengthening the economy, investing in technolo...

El-Sayed is facing off against Congresswoman Haley Stevens in the primary race. The winner will face off against Former Congressman Mike Rogers, who's running unopposed in the Republican Primary.
El-Sayed has said he did not grow up with ambitions of becoming a politician, and instead worked in health care before entering politics because of what he has called “our broken politics.”
“I’m running for U.S. Senate because in the state that built the American dream, it shouldn’t be this hard just to get by to pay our bills or afford our groceries, or see our doctors, or get our politicians in D.C. to give a damn about us,” El-Sayed said in a campaign ad.
