- Bob Severe Weather Preparedness-Day 4 Lightning Safety 2/5/2026
- Date posted
- Description
- Lightning remains one of the deadliest weather hazards in the United States. In Georgia alone, lightning strikes claimed 30 lives between 1995 and 2016. Most of these tragedies happen during the summer months, especially in the afternoon and evening when thunderstorms are most common. Many fatalities occur when people are caught outdoors as storms move in. Even when a lightning strike isn’t fatal, survivors can suffer long-term, life-altering injuries.
Lightning forms when electrical energy builds up between positive and negative charges inside a thunderstorm and between the storm and the ground. When that energy is suddenly released, a lightning bolt flashes. Temperatures within a single strike can reach up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hotter than the surface of the sun. That intense burst of heat causes the surrounding air to rapidly expand and collapse, creating the shock wave we hear as thunder. Lightning tends to strike the tallest object in the area, whether that...

- Bob Jeswald Weather Update 2/5/2026 Columbus, Ga.
- Date posted
- Description
- We’re settling into a stretch of fair, dry weather, with a few breezy moments mixed in. High pressure will stay in control and act as a shield, keeping the colder Arctic air locked well to our north—unlike what we dealt with last week.
A couple of cold fronts will try to push toward the area, but they won’t make it far enough south to impact us. The only noticeable change comes on Saturday, when temperatures briefly dip into the lower 50s. After that, we rebound nicely, warming back near 60 and even climbing into the lower 70s by early to midweek.
A weak disturbance may pass through around midweek, but it looks minor, bringing at most a few stray showers. Overall, dry conditions stick around, so drought concerns remain unchanged.

- Bob Jeswald Weather Update 2/4/2026 Columbus, Ga.
- Date posted

- Description
- You’ll want the jacket to start your Thursday. It’s a cold morning, and even with plenty of sunshine this afternoon, it’s going to stay on the chilly side. A breezy, gusty wind will kick in as cooler air settles in behind a passing front, keeping afternoon highs stuck in the upper 40s.
The good news? We’re on a warming trend. Temperatures climb into the upper 50s to near 60 on Friday and Saturday, and it keeps getting better from there. Lower 70s look ready to make a comeback next week. As for rain, not much to worry about—right now, only a weak system around Tuesday could bring a few spotty showers.

- Bob Highlights Day 2 For Severe Weather Preparedness Week 2/3/2026 - Severe Weather Preparedness Day
- Date posted
- Description
- Damaging wind is actually the most common type of severe weather we deal with across north and central Georgia. It can happen any time of year, but it really ramps up in July, when quick-hitting summer thunderstorms can produce strong downbursts. Looking at records from 1950 to 2010, damaging winds were responsible for 18 fatalities and more than 300 injuries in our part of the state — a reminder that these storms shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Hail is another threat that can pop up during any month, but it’s most likely in the spring. May is the peak month for hail across north and central Georgia, with April close behind. Most hailstones here are about one to two inches in diameter, but we’ve seen some extremes. In fact, softball-sized hail — around 4.5 inches — has been recorded in north Georgia four separate times.

- Description
- As Georgia experiences these changing weather conditions, it also marks an important time for awareness and preparedness. This year (2026), Georgia will recognize February 2–6 as Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Severe weather is no stranger to the state, and the past several years have brought multiple high-impact events to the region.
One of the most notable was the January 12, 2023 tornado outbreak, when more than a dozen tornadoes—some rated EF2 or stronger—tracked across parts of central Georgia. Events like these highlight the importance of having a weather plan, staying informed, and knowing how to respond when severe weather threatens.

- Bob Jeswald WRBL Tuesday Forecast and the 7-Day Columbus, Ga.
- Date posted
- Description
- After a stretch of frigid air, the First Alert Forecast shows we’re on track for a welcome rebound in temperatures. Readings are expected to return closer to average, bringing a brief break from the cold as we move through midweek.
A fast-moving storm system will arrive mainly in the form of rain late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. The rainfall will be short-lived, moving in and out quickly, with minimal impact for most of the day on Wednesday.
While the system exits, cloud cover will linger through Thursday, keeping skies mostly overcast. Unfortunately, rainfall totals remain light, and the region continues to fall short of the precipitation needed to significantly ease ongoing drought conditions.
Looking ahead to the weekend, another modest warm-up is expected. Daytime highs should climb into the lower 60s, while overnight temperatures dip into the lower to mid-30s—cool, but seasonable for this time of year.
