ALDOT is expected to approve the field work and design by the end of the year.
Construction could start next March with a completion date in May 2027.

- Weather Aware Thursday: Overnight Storms, Heavy Rain, and Flooding Concerns-Bob Jeswald 5/5/2026 6PM
- Date posted
- Description
- We’re tracking a Weather Aware period stretching from midnight through 4 PM Thursday, and it’s one you’ll want to stay on top of as timing and impacts continue to evolve.
Right now, the leading edge of a cold front pushes into the region late Wednesday night, (GRAF, RRFS-A, and GFS all in agreement) mainly affecting areas northwest of Interstate 85 between 11 PM and shortly after midnight. From there, it gradually sags south, reaching East Alabama and West Central Georgia between about 3 and 4 AM.

Some of these storms may “train,” meaning they move over the same locations again and again. That setup could lead to rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches, especially north of Columbus.
There is also a low-end, marginal risk for a few stronger storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, and while not the main ...

A strong cold front moves in early Thursday morning, bringing a round of showers and storms. We’re already tracking the potential for a few strong to severe storms, especially across parts of east Alabama.
Behind that front, temperatures cool back down, but the pattern stays active. Rain chances return Saturday and continue through Monday with scattered showers and storms.
And we’ll be watching Monday closely there’s another setup that could support strong to severe weather.

A pleasant late morning Saturday will lead into a sunny Sunday, along with cooler temperatures. This rainfall is especially welcome news for ongoing wildfires in southeast Georgia, as measurable rain should help slow their spread and allow fire crews to gain better control in some areas.
High temperatures will remain in the upper 60s on Saturday, with cooler morning lows in the mid to upper 40s Sunday into Monday. Warmer weather returns by midweek, with highs back in the 80s and the next chance for storms arriving around that time.
