- President Donald Trump’s efforts to combat violent crime have included dispatching federal troops and law enforcement to Washington, D.C and Los Angeles, with promises to send federal agents to other Democratic-led cities, including Chicago.
The strategy has faced legal obstacles and mixed public opinion. Data shows a decline in violent crime nationwide, and Tuesday, a federal judge declared the June deployment of federal agents to L.A. unlawful.
Supporters of President Trump point to the fact that crime in D.C. has decreased since troops arrived in August compared to the same period in 2024, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department.
All of this raises questions about how the response from both parties could influence the upcoming election. Will President Trump’s tough-on-crime approach bolster his support among Republicans, or will voters see it as an authoritarian overreach? Can Democrats find an effective middle ground that...

- Date posted
- Description
- Should we be sounding the alarm for higher education? Colleges and universities, both public and private, are facing enormous challenges.
State and federal funding has steadily declined, forcing institutions to tighten their belts, cut staff, eliminate departments, and shutter facilities. The Trump administration’s immigration policies have meant significantly fewer international students, cutting into a once reliable source of full-tuition revenue. And looming over it all is the so-called “demographic cliff” — a sharp decline in the number of college-aged students, which is shrinking enrollment across the country. These pressures have pushed many smaller schools to close their doors or merge with larger institutions.
At the same time, prospective students and their families are questioning the value of a college degree, especially as tuition continues to climb.
This episode, we examine the crisis in higher education and what the future may hold for America’...

- Description
- California Governor Gavin Newsom is grabbing headlines thanks to a recent strategy switch-up. In response to redistricting efforts in Texas, the democrat began copying President Donald Trump’s social media style – memes, TikTok trends, ALL CAPS tweets. It’s an energetic and aggressive approach that draws attention, followers and hopefully some voters.
At the same time, a new meme-style mural of Vice President JD Vance on the side of a Fishtown diner has gone viral, drawing visitors from around the country. The organization behind the artwork gained attention in the past for publicly demolishing a Tesla to protest DOGE cuts by Elon Musk.
Pot-stirring stunts, internet speak, and meme trolling have become wildly popular political strategies. Far-right influencers and some of the president’s strongest supporters have been experts in this approach for over a decade. But Democrats have long failed at – or even avoided – this more internet-native style o...

- Description
- The recent battle over funding public transit has laid bare a deeper and growing divide between Pennsylvania’s urban and rural regions. In the debate over support for SEPTA, Republican leaders, many representing rural western districts, have resisted efforts to direct more funding toward the southeast.
This conflict highlights a broader political and ideological rift that’s been intensifying across the commonwealth, especially as the Philadelphia suburbs have become bluer.
Gains by Democrats in the southeast helped them overtake the House in recent years, but gone are the days when top GOP lawmakers had strong ties to our region.
The SEPTA fight highlights competing priorities, lifestyles and values between two very different parts of the state.
On this episode of Studio 2, we’ll explore this “Philly vs. farm” divide by talking to key Democratic and Republican lawmakers from our region about how they make our case in Harrisburg.

- Texas Republicans failed again to reach the quorum needed to pass their redrawn congressional map on Tuesday. House Democrats fled the Lone Star State to temporarily block the redistricting plan, which would potentially flip five Democratic seats to Republican ahead of the midterms.
As Texas Governor Greg Abbott ramps up threats on the absent state House Democrats, the debate over gerrymandering has spilled out across the country. In response, some Democrat-led states are now threatening to “fight fire with fire” and redraw their maps. California, for example, is mulling a new proposal that could potentially hand Democrats five seats.
But what will this tit-for-tat partisan redistricting battle mean for the upcoming election? Is it legal to redraw maps mid-decade, before the new census? And how will this redistricting arms race escalation affect voting rights and the health of our democracy?

- How we remember America’s past | Studio 2 from WHYY | 8/5/25
- Date posted
- Description
- President Donald Trump pledged earlier this year to “restore truth and sanity’ to American history by prohibiting funds for exhibits or programs that “divide Americans based on race.” As a result, several exhibits at Independence National Historical Park may be removed or covered up. This comes ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary, which is expected to bring a mass of tourists to the area next summer.
‘The President's House’ is one of the displays under federal review. It highlights the contradictions of our Founding Fathers advocating for freedom and liberty while owning enslaved people. The exhibit’s creators say it’s important to face and reflect on the uglier parts of American history. The Trump administration says “disproportionately emphas[izing] negative aspects of U.S. history…can unintentionally distort understanding.”
Have we lost a shared understanding of American history? Have we ever had one? What happens when the stor...

- Pennsylvania as an AI hub? | Studio 2 from WHYY | 8/04/25
- Date posted
- Description
- With the artificial intelligenceI boom, tech companies are rushing to build data centers to power their super computers. And they are coming to our region.
A few weeks ago, President Donald Trump was in Pennsylvania, alongside U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick and Gov. Josh Shapiro, to highlight a $90 million AI investment in the commonwealth from companies including Google, Amazon, Coreweave and Blackstone.
Proponents argue the data centers will bring money and jobs to states and see this as an opportunity for Pennsylvania to become an artificial intelligence hub.
Detractors point out these centers use enormous amounts of energy. Every time we use tools like Chat-GPT, super computer servers kick into gear. Experts predict that by 2028, AI will use 12% of all U.S. electricity, putting more strain on our overworked power grids.
Consumers are already seeing their electricity costs increase from data center competing power demands. In Philadel...

- History on a half shell: How Philadelphia was built on oysters
- Date posted
- Description
- In 1776, Philadelphia’s population of about 35,000 consumed millions of oysters a year. The colonial city was riddled with taverns and street vendors who sold oysters on the half shell. Residents could wade into the Delaware River, before it became industrialized, and pull oysters out of the water by hand.
Leftover shells were used to pave streets and packed into the hulls of freight ships as weight ballasts. They were burned for their lime and used to make mortar for Philadelphia’s early brick buildings.
Learn more about the role of oysters in the American Revolution.

- Why everyone’s a critic | Studio 2 from WHYY | 7/31/2025
- Date posted
- Description
- An app that lets women anonymously review men soared to number one in the app store this week. ‘Tea’ users post photos of guys they’ve dated along with ‘green’ and ‘red’ flags and detailed gossip – it’s like Yelp, for singles seeking love.
Before the internet age, we asked trusted friends and family for recommendations and advice. The best hair stylist, a meal at a nice restaurant, new electronics, beauty products…the list goes on. Now, in our search for the best of everything, we turn to strangers online who leave five-star raves or single-star complaints.
Most Americans read reviews before making any purchases, and almost half of US consumers contribute to Google reviews, Yelp, TripAdvisor and other review sites. When did everyone become a critic? On this episode of Studio 2, we’ll talk about why we love to read and write reviews, their massive impact on businesses and why they’re getting harder to trust.
