- Classic Autumn is here with one week warm, the next week cold. The days ahead lean warmer than average with warmer nights on the way this Friday and weekend.
However a significant temperature drop comes next Monday and Tuesday with some places in the south down over 10 degrees on where they are this week.
But mid to late next week another high rolls in - there may even be a sub-tropical low following that. Welcome to classic Autumn across New Zealand!

- It’s the final weekend at Covid Alert Level 4 and next week the weather is in favour of people being more outdoors than indoors with high pressure on the way.
However we have some windy weather this Saturday and Monday, especially in the usual windy westerly areas like the lower South Island, the Southern Alps and Cook Strait/Wellington area.
Northern areas look fairly calm and most regions are average to above average temperature wise.

- It was windy in a number of regions over the weekend but conditions are now improving as high pressure rolls in across New Zealand.

However the Southern Ocean is especially stormy right now, more like mid-winter than Autumn. It’s encouraging typical autumn like westerlies, but also frequent southerlies.

- Easter Weekend is here and the weather is doing what it typically does at Easter - be changeable. While today, Thursday is a bit windy in some places Friday and Saturday will see many areas calmer and warmer.
However on Sunday and Monday a low will cross NZ from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean and start to rapidly deepen - on top of that a high from Australia is trying to move in next week and the combined effort will make for gale force winds developing Sunday PM and across Monday in both islands. Some isolated power cuts are possible - so be prepared.
We also take a look at Severe Cyclone Harold which overnight returned to Cat 5 strength as it approached Tonga. It’s now moving out to sea and away from land.

High pressure over Tasmania next week will influence the precise tracking of this storm and whether or not it directly hits Northland or brushes by out at sea will be decided by that large high.
If the tropical storm does move in it would likely have a very positive impact on the drought - but may be too much of a good thing with a risk of slips and flooding and also wind damage too (if the low itself comes in).

- We’re into the third month of 2020 already (can you believe it!?) and with it comes a slight change in our weather pattern - with better chances for rain.
The first chance for wet weather is this Tuesday to Thursday, the next chance is March 9 and 10, then again maybe mid month. While many areas do still lean drier than average, this change is boost to confidence with at least some silver linings appearing after a very dry start to 2020.

- We have a cooler change for some places on Saturday, like Canterbury, but by Sunday high pressure smothers the country and by Monday hotter, more humid northerlies will spread across both islands making for warmer than average weather.
Around Tuesday and Wednesday high pressure finally departs New Zealand for a short time - but hopefully enough time to get a cold front into the country and some afternoon downpours.
Wednesday has the better chance of downpours and areas of rain around the North Island - we’ll be locking this in by Monday with more detail.

- An absolutely enormous area of high pressure is stuck out to NZ’s east and will help encourage more humidity into parts of the country, as will a sub-tropical northerly flow developing this weekend and into next week.
While conditions are mostly dry in the days ahead we do see some West Coast rain and a few North Island showers - also some showers into Canterbury.
Next week, between highs, NZ may have a chance for further rain or showers , before the next high rolls in from the west.

- For those in drought we take a closer look at rainmakers in the NZ area with a special outlook to March 9th when we have our next best chance of rain.
Nothing is locked in yet, so instead what we’re looking for is where and when we have our best chances for rain - rather than a focus on how dry it is.
We’ll try to do more of these outlooks as we head into March.
We also have look at the South Island and lower North Island which over the next 48 hours will be windier.
Much of NZ is also about to get sub-tropical winds - pushing temperatures up even further.

- We have the first map for March and the lead up for the end of February shows high pressure is in charge.
We will have a few showers in the mix though, they are fairly isolated in the upper North Island from Wednesday to Friday but a few hit and miss downpours.
The West Coast has some rain later this week and a burst of strong west to north west winds up to about the lower North Island.
March 1 kicks off with more high pressure - but we are seeing some changes as we head into March to the belt of high pressure that has been affecting NZ since the start of the year.
