- NZ has a southerly with snow & frosts along with a sub-tropical low this week - but many regions may not have much “weather” to really talk about. The South Island is most exposed to extremes with big frosts next couple nights ahead and more snow in the Southern Alps (in the northern end).
Meanwhile the North Island has a developing low which will likely brush Northland on Wednesday with some wind and rain.
Australia is a little unsettled from SA to TAS but a huge high is developing this week. This weekend, however, rain returns to QLD and NSW, sliding in with an easterly flow.

- NZ has a big shift in airflows, away from the frosty southerlies and back to the mild northerlies. This weekend should temperatures jump, especially by night, compared to where they have been over the past 72 hours.
Some wet weather will also move in from the west, out of Tasmania area which has some windy/wet weather in the days ahead.
Next week there are conflicting models - some show a big low with rain/wind around Wednesday, others show calmer weather with more high pressure. For updates over the weekend please refer to the forecasts at WeatherWatch.co.nz and RuralWeather.co.nz.

By Friday (Matariki) we’ll be seeing northerlies over NZ which will lift temperatures up from where they are today - but showers line up western NZ going into the weekend, while westerlies blow through southern parts of Australia.

- It’s a short week in NZ as we head towards our first official Matariki celebration on Friday and this weekend. We have the forecast across New Zealand for this week and the upcoming new long weekend.

- New Zealand and Australia continue to share similar weather patterns with a couple of big high pressure zones moving through and a couple of low pressure systems too.
For NZ the South Island will be more winter-like in the days ahead while the North Island has milder sub-tropical winds at times.
Next week a sub-tropical low near Northland will interact with a powerful high pressure zone near Southland. It’s one to watch - as it may create easterly gales in northern NZ.
Aussie doesn’t have much severe weather - but a storm in the Southern Ocean and associated cold front will swipe WA with gales in some areas, then brush coastal SA, VIC and TAS.

WeatherWatch.co.nz has nicknamed the two storms with Storm 1 yesterday named “May” and storm 2 developing today and peaking tomorrow named “June”.
Storm 2 (June) will roar into the South Island on Wednesday - but then stalls there, unravelling slowly until Saturday when it falls apart and clears. Storm 1 (May) is now tracking away from NZ into the Southern Ocean.
Meanwhile Aussie has a wintry southerly on the backside of Storm 2 (June) - and this could see 50cm of snow in the mountains around Canberra / ACT.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says temperatures are about to tumble with daytime maximum temperatures on Friday and Saturday in the lower South Island hovering around +5 to +7 degrees. Snow flurries are expected down to a few hundred, or couple hundred, metres for a time - although accumulation looks low (and we’ll drill down deeper on this in other updates this week).
Generally speaking a cold southerly will impact TAS, VIC, ACT and NSW this week, but will be much more significant in the NZ area with all of New Zealand under the colder (short lived) southerly by Saturday.

An enormous high pressure zone - nearly double the width of Aussie - is moving into Tasmania and then on to NZ next week.
It brings a cooler change to NZ this long weekend (nothing too major though) and helps to carry on the big easterly flow right across Australia.
The centre of this high won’t reach NZ until the middle to later part of next week - with a chance of frosts in some regions.

We take a look at the set up across both nations as a southerly change finally reaches NZ (following a mild week for many) while in northern Queensland a low pressure zone looks set to deliver a lot of rain over the coming week.

- It’s humid and drizzly in the north while those in the deep south eagerly await the next burst of wet weather - although it comes with a cooler southerly that will spread nationwide this weekend.
We track the heavy rain on the West Coast, some wet weather in Southland & Otago and also up in Bay of Plenty.
Plus, over in Australia a tropical deluge near Cairns in the week ahead due to an offshore rainmaker hugging the coast, which may deliver up to 400mm!

- We have the latest on ex-tropical Cyclone Fili plus the Easter Forecast for NZ & Australia.
Fili today gets closer to East Cape and Gisborne before departing away from the North Island overnight. A lot of heavy rain still to come through and slips, flooding and road closures are all a possibility.
The good news is that weather clears up fast on Thursday with sunnier weather for the long weekend - although a cooler change in Southland brings showers on Saturday and easterlies in Australia bring more La Nina showers.

- We have the latest tracking on ex-tropical cyclone Fili as it heads towards the north eastern corner of the North Island on Wednesday.
The storm is expected to track a little more east than forecasts were suggesting over the past two days.
Rough weather may start later today in Northland (especially eastern areas), then the low slides towards East Cape around the middle of Wednesday before clearing NZ early on Thursday morning.

- Stormy weather is on the way for parts of the North Island this week as an ex-tropical cyclone rapidly deepens in the NZ area.
