- A classic ‘squash zone’ of windy to gale force weather is expected this Friday in the North Island with gales from Auckland northwards and some gusts might even reach 100km/h. It’s not a storm - in fact the low is quite weak - but the low is pressing into strong high pressure and that creates the windy zone (easterlies).
By the weekend northerlies return - or light winds - and humidity levels may be high. This will encourage afternoon downpours with isolated thunderstorms possible in both islands.
In Australia a low pressure zone from WA is moving into SA, VIC and TAS (and brushing NSW to the south). Yes, it brings more rain - but no, hopefully not flooding rains.

- One big high pressure zone in the Tasman Sea will create windy weather for the North Island and the south eastern corner of Australia this week.
The strong high - which will cross the South Island late week bringing mostly settled weather - will have a “squash zone” of windy weather around it, bringing in gale force easterlies to the upper North Island by Friday and windy to gale force northerlies at times for the south eastern corner of Australia.
Northern NZ may also have some heavy rain late week - but as we explain in the video, there is a little uncertainty about just how much, but possibly close to 100mm in some places with gusts over 100km/h too.

- We have the forecast for NZ, Australia and the South Pacific through to Wednesday next week as tropical lows try to form and high pressure dominates in the Tasman Sea - bringing settled weather finally to south eastern Australia and a surge of hot weather next week.
That means NZ will be going the other way, with a slightly cooler change moving in this weekend for some areas (those in the north are least impacted).
We track the remaining gales, thunderstorms and rain - and focus on where the large settled areas will be.

Early summer heat is spreading across NZ today as Australia deals with a much cooler change. Gale force westerlies will also be spreading up parts of NZ over the coming day, easing back on Friday as high pressure rolls in.
In fact high pressure is the dominant feature as we go into the weekend for both NZ and Australia - which will likely be good news for many.
The tropics aren’t overly active but we do track low pressure zones and plenty of downpours there.

- La Nina is peaking in November then it starts to fade out in early 2023 back to neutral. La Nina isn’t necessarily making dramatic changes to NZ’s weather but the 3 month rainfall and temperature trends do suggest it will be slightly milder than average nationwide and northern and north eastern parts of the North Island lean a little wetter - but not dramatically wetter.
November’s weather looks quite classic for this part of spring in NZ with a more westerly lean to begin with, bringing heavy rain back to the West Coast. But eastern areas may finally get a run of mostly dry and warmer weather for the next couple of weeks.
The outlook into summer doesn’t a dramatic change - most likely a continuation of the weather pattern NZ has been seeing for the past couple of months, but perhaps easing back a little more as we head through November (the winds usually ease a lot in the second half of the month as summer approaches).

- Classic mid-spring weather is here with a windy weather on the way for many places. Halloween weather across NZ looks a little unsettled later today with the chance of showers in both islands - but plenty of dry spells and not very windy either. In Australia it’s a different story with unsettled weather across the south eastern corner as far north as Sydney.
Tuesday is the Melbourne Cup in Victoria - it’s a windy and showery day there with even the risk of a thunderstorm.
Gales arrive in NZ on Wednesday and linger until Friday before easing.
This Saturday looks more settled in both NZ and Australia as high pressure moves in.

- Windy weather is about to spread across both New Zealand and Australia with severe gales possible. There will be a big difference in temperatures from one side of the Tasman to the other though, with New Zealand warming up into the 20s in many places (after a cooler Thursday in the south) while Australia has two colder changes moving in - one over the next 24 hours and the other late weekend and early next week.
The storm developing this Sunday and Monday around Tasmania and into the Southern Ocean area may bring some wintry weather back into Australia for a time next week - while NZ looks milder and more settled to begin with next week.

Nor’Westers will be the dominant airflow developing across New Zealand for the rest of the month - that will lift temperatures in the east and make for some sunnier, drier, weather - while the West Coast has plenty of rain on the way.
In Australia it’s TAS, VIC, NSW, ACT and SA most in the firing line for more wind and rain - especially later this weekend and the start of next week.

- High pressure from the long weekend is now departing and behind it a windier and milder north to north west flow will kick in across this week.
A large low pressure zone around Tasmania will slowly stretch and drift towards NZ bringing 125 to 150mm (or more) to the West Coast with lighter, patchier, rain heading up the North Island’s western and northern sides this weekend.
For the east it means drier and milder with highs in the low to mid 20s by Friday or Saturday.
Australia’s big rain events take a breather with longer dry spells and less heavy rain - but more low pressure is drifting back to the south eastern corner next week with more rain and thunderstorms.

It may be a little windy around Wellington at times and on Monday parts of the South Island have showers as a cold front moves northwards with a south to south west change. High pressure is the main feature and dominates into next week too.
Australia has more rain along the east in QLD and NSW and then another low pressure system brings further rain into SA, VIC and TAS. We have updated rainfall maps out to midnight Sunday.

- Plenty to talk about today as we cover the world’s deepest storm right now near Antarctica, the next deluge for Australia and New Zealand’s Labour Weekend is coming up.
Before Labour Weekend arrives NZ has a couple of cold fronts on the way, with the main one on Thursday night/Friday. High pressure rolls in for the long weekend bringing mostly dry weather - but cold starts with some frosts possible on Saturday morning.
Australia’s deluge continues with another 100mm+ coming for parts of QLD and NSW and more heavy rain and thunderstorms for SA and VIC. It’s not the end either with another low pressure zone coming next week, maybe two more, as Aussie’s very wet spring continues. The tropics are also waking up now that La Nina is peaking.
Finally, the storm near Antarctica at the moment is the deepest on earth, with air pressure last night around 900hPa just south of South America.

- Heavy rain will return to eastern Australia while high pressure in the Tasman Sea encourages a cooler airflow across New Zealand this week.
New Zealand — There are two main waves of colder air for NZ. The first on Tuesday and the second on Thursday PM and Friday AM - and will move into Southland, Otago and then slides up the eastern side of NZ as far north as about Gisborne. Rainfall totals aren’t huge and snow flurries look mostly light and mostly higher up. Check your local RuralWeather.co.nz forecast for more.
Australia — Starts off dry in the east and south east, but a rainmaker today in SA will drift eastwards in the days ahead and stall over QLD, NSW, A.C.T and northern half of VIC, bringing (once again) 100mm+ in some areas. - The weather isn’t as busy or active as it’s been lately but we still have a sub-tropical low moving past NZ and a windy westerly change for southern parts of Australia.
The cold front from Aussie falls apart as it moves into the western side of NZ this weekend, bringing only a few showers.
Next week high pressure is the dominant feature - but we’ll see a cooler change move up NZ with a few showers, and in Aussie it’s the eastern coastline that will see a few showers.

Australia’s weather is very wet today in the south east - but it does ease on Friday to windy (gale) westerlies in VIC and TAS and showers. High pressure returns but then next week another cold front will bring more wet weather to VIC and TAS (sorry!!).
New Zealand’s weather next week isn’t too dramatic - a slight west to south west lean next week should see more showers in the west and drier in the east.

The Aussie rain band reaches NZ on Sunday but only as a showery system in the west (mostly the South Island).

- A significant rain event in Australia’s south east corner as NZ monitors a sub-tropical low - these are the two main features of the weather this week in our part of the world.
NZ - This week is much warmer and more settled compared to conditions a week ago, with easterlies, northerlies and westerlies the dominant airflows (no polar southerlies!). Some rain on the West Coast with heavy falls south of the glaciers, but elsewhere only a few showers are mostly in the forecast with most regions leaning drier. By Saturday a sub-tropical low from Tonga will be very near the North Island… for now it looks to remain just offshore, but it’s worth monitoring incase it does bring some wind and rain to northern NZ.

- High pressure is moving into NZ, rain for Bathurst and the tropics are finally starting to wake up after winter/dry season.

1) The wintry change in NZ this week is starting to wind down and by the end of Friday it will be mostly cleared from NZ, with high pressure and frosts rolling in - then the high departs by Sunday/Monday and that encourages a warmer northerly flow back of the country.
2) Aussie has more rainmakers in the south east, but it does finally ease later on Sunday. Windy and wet weather will hug NSW in particular - including Sydney, but does ease later this weekend. Bathurst looks wet to start with, drying out later - and cool with a high of only 13C.
3) The tropics will see the easterly winds kicking in next week with a low forming near Tonga and the Cook Islands. Not a storm, but ...

- September’s weather pattern looks to carry on into October with big highs and big low pressure systems moving through. It means more variety in our weather and, generally speaking, warmer than average weather.
However, October’s first week includes a significant southerly blast for NZ, which is likely followed by frosty high pressure then milder weather moving into the middle of the month.
Windier westerlies may finally be kicking in later this month after a delayed start (possibly due to La Nina bringing more easterlies to NZ, but also an increase in high pressure in the Southern Ocean area, which this month heads back north over Australia and to NZ’s north - which can shut down sub-tropical rainmakers.

A significant rainmaker for the deserts of Western Australia over the coming few days while mid next week a wintry blast is possible in Perth and Hobart, as warm and windy northerlies blow through SA, VIC, NSW, ACT.
Florida - Hurricane Ian made landfall in south western Florida today as a Category 4 hurricane. Winds were sustained at 240km/h as it made landfall.

Australia has rain pushing through VIC, TAS, ACT and NSW this week - and just brushing southern parts of QLD. Later in the week WA gets the next spring like windy and wet westerly change.
Despite the rain in NZ and Aussie this week, it’s not really directly connected to the historical third La Nina in a row which has now officially returned - we take a look at the tropics where it’s still looking similar to the past couple of months.

A powerful high pressure system will cross NZ this weekend bringing mostly settled weather and milder northerly flow kicking in. By Monday this high will already be leaving NZ and then a storm south of Australia will move into the southern Tasman Sea area and fall apart - but will leave behind days of rain for western and some northern facing areas.

- High pressure bringing settled weather and colder nights/mornings will cross over NZ over the next few days - and as it departs on Sunday and Monday it will drag in a windy but mild north to north west flow.
Heavy rain will firstly cross Australia’s south and south east before reaching western NZ early next week - with the northerly flow allowing it to linger for days.
Australia has a colder change after the Southern Ocean storm tracks by (over the next few days) with next week kicking off cooler for most main centres before settling down again.

A deep low south of Australia will bring gales to coastal areas and rain too. The low will fall apart this weekend as high pressure tracks over NZ - and by early next week a wet northerly will turn to a windier, showery, westerly flow.

- The next 24 hours in NZ will see a snowy change move up the country but it won’t be a major event - nor will it linger.
A big block of high pressure in eastern Australia will take this week to drift to NZ - bringing a settled weekend to most of NZ.
As it departs Australia a storm in the Southern Ocean will brush southern coastal parts in the days ahead - with the system falling apart next week in the NZ area as a windy spring-like westerly.
Snow is also forecast in the ranges of eastern Australia as this stormy system departs there this weekend.

Instability with the low pressure system has created showers/narrow rain-bands which highlight the spinning nature of the low. It's not a storm - although there are a few locally heavy downpours and gusty winds associated with it. - A changeable spring weather pattern is already setting in across NZ & OZ and this week more low pressure will impact both nations bringing localised wind and rain.
The North Island is most exposed to rain and wind this week, while the South Island is more exposed to a wintry cold snap then some frosty weather.
By this weekend a storm south of Australia will be driving in wind and rain to SA, VIC and TAS, while a low near NZ’s upper North Island will also bring localised areas of heavy rain and wind this coming weekend.

- Northerlies will develop this weekend in NZ bringing a mild Sunday, while a wintry change in Australia’s south east will head our way by the start of the new week.
Tuesday and Wednesday once again look cold across NZ with snow flurries (light ones) possible in Northern Southland to perhaps only 100 metres, while snow flurries will again fall as far north as Mt Ruapehu and even the Desert Road. But snow totals don’t look huge due to incoming high pressure behind it.
In Australia it’s settled for a large portion of the continent but by a wintry change kicks in this weekend for TAS and VIC in particular - and brushes ACT and some parts of NSW.

- Both NZ and Australia have changeable weather over the coming days, from warm to cold (or cold to warm) as lows and highs track through. None of the lows are especially stormy, but may still locally produce thunderstorms and hail in NSW and VIC, and in the NZ area we have some heavy rain around the eastern North Island, then a more wintry change next week in the south.
But high pressure is still the most dominant feature of our weather - as we forecast in our recent ClimateWatch update.

- Australia is sending NZ high pressure - but also another rainmaker with snow. Typical spring-weather is kicking in now and that means changeable temperatures and real variety in our weather.
Mild northerlies from Aussie will move into NZ this weekend - replacing the wintry change we’ve seen this week.
But by Tuesday the next surge of cold sou’westers moves back in to southern NZ with a big temperature drop. Like the cold change this week, it looks short lived.
Meanwhile in Australia heavy rain is expected north of the Yarra Ranges and west of the ranges up to about Sydney, with up to 50mm over the coming days for some. Lower totals in the east for Sydney.

- We track an incoming wintry blast for southern NZ this Sunday and Monday while a low pressure zone exits eastern Australia with wet weather that will brush northern NZ next week.
Australia has a very poweful high to the south currently bringing cooler southerlies - it will take until the middle of next week to move more into NZ.
