- As it gets colder outside, many of us are getting ready for winter sports on the ice. Sports like skating and ice fishing, but do you know how to stay safe when you hit the ice?
Before you head out on your favorite frozen pond this year, there are some basic rules to keep in mind and Gerry Dworkin from Lifesaving Resources is the expert, "We're under the philosophy that no ice should ever be considered as safe ice. So before you go out on the ice, number one: you need to be sure you've got at least four to five inches of new, clear, hard ice and that it's not snow covered. No air bubbles, in it, [that's] very dangerous. You need to be sure that the integrity of the ice is clear everywhere you go on the ice."
If you are going out on the ice this winter, Dworkin recommends some safety equipment to take with you, "We recommend wearing a float coat, but at the very least you should carry ice picks and a pealess plastic whistle. The whistle to alert other people...

- Monday, the Atlantic, Eastern and Central Pacific hurricane seasons officially ended, marking more than ten years since a major hurricane hit the U.S. coast, the last being Wilma in 2005.
The word straight from NOAA was, "Below-normal Atlantic hurricane season ends; active eastern and central Pacific seasons shatter records". As predicted, the Atlantic season produced a lower than normal 11 named storms, while the East Pacific had 18 named storms, 13 of which became hurricanes, with nine of them being major, Category 3 or higher, hurricanes. One of those, Patricia, was the strongest recorded storm ever in the Western Hemisphere with winds of 200 miles per hour! Hurricane Sandra was the strongest recorded hurricane so late in the year with max sustained winds of 145 mph.
In the Central Pacific, we saw 14 named storms, including eight hurricanes, five were major. And for the first time in the record books, three of the major Category 4 storms; Ignacio, Kilo, ...

- After a winter storm blows through Colorado, most head to the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. But Kyle Bauer finds a flat piece of land to go snow kiting.
"When everyone is running inside because of the wind we are running out." Says Kyle.
Similar to water based kite-boarding, the winter sport uses large kites to glide on the snow, with wind as the engine.
"The perfect weather conditions is wind at 15 mph and gusts up to 20" Says Kyle.
To make sure he catches the right wind at the right time, Kyle has to understand the forecast. Like a meteorologist, he uses multiple sources to analyze the weather.
"Everything I can get my hands on to come up with my own model." Says Kyle.
The forecast can make all the difference between a bad day or a great day for snow-kiting.

Thankfully, no one was in the vehicles at the time of the cave-in and no injuries were reported. Drone footage shows the massive cave-in swallowed the cars 30 feet deep and the split stretched 600 feet long.
Sinkholes are common when the rock below the surface can be dissolved by groundwater, like limestone, carbonate rock, or salt beds. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, sinkholes tend to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.

- (11/6/15) – According to NASA, the agency's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission has identified the process that appears to have played a key role in the transition of the Martian climate from an early, warm and wet environment that might have supported surface life to the cold, arid planet Mars is today.
MAVEN's data has enabled researchers to determine the rate at which the Martian atmosphere currently is losing gas to space via stripping by the solar wind. The findings reveal that the erosion of Mars’ atmosphere increases significantly during solar storms. The scientific results from the mission appear in the November 5 issues of the journals Science and Geophysical Research Letters.
“Mars appears to have had a thick atmosphere warm enough to support liquid water which is a key ingredient and medium for life as we currently know it,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator for the NASA Science Mission Directorat...

After losing the designation of HURRICANE, for many, Sandy, lost the gravity that went with that classification as a perceived threat and that led many people in the storm’s path to take it less seriously than they should have. The confluence of an ex-hurricane and a Nor’easter, the storm WAS a monster that made history just a few days after prompting school closings in Florida, slamming the Northeast on the 21st anniversary of the killer hybrid system, dubbed the Perfect Storm.

“Periods of heavy rainfall can increase snake activity, particularly in warm weather or in warm climates and that increase in snake activity is likely to increase human snake encounters.” Said Naturalist Scott Shupe, He also said if you encounter a snake. “And you don’t know what kind it is, the rule is, you treat it like it’s a venomous snake and the way you treat a venomous snake is you get away from it and leave it alone.”
