When asked about the bloom, Park Ranger Alan Van Valkenburg stated, “If you get the chance to see a bloom in Death Valley, especially a super bloom, you should take the opportunity to see it because it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Alan went on to say, "Everything is in place for a super bloom to happen, but we are anxiously waiting for the forecasted El Niño rains to start falling before the flowers wilt. The wildflower bloom is already very nice, but should become more widespread and long-running with that rain. Keep your fingers crossed!"
When asked about the length of the 'super bloom', Alan went on to say, "On the valley floor the bloom should last until April. Then there may be different flowers at higher elevations.

- (2/10/16) –This week started with winter in full swing with big wind and heavy snow affecting millions.
Before we get to the beast, let's take a quick look at the beauty. Before the big storms made into the Great Smokey Mountains of North Carolina on Monday, light snow fell near Boone in a scene straight out of a fantasy film. Before long though, the clouds thickened, the wind picked up and the real snow began, blanketing the mountains in a new coating of white.
At the same time hundreds of miles northward, Massachusetts' coast was being hammered by a pounding storm surge. The waves damaged homes, flooded streets and pushed sand and debris inland for blocks.
And making things worse, the snow came next, whipped by high winds, that caused more problems on the streets and threatened to bring down more powerlines, that would put more people in the dark during the storm's peak.
Then we head to Pennsylvania. In Harrisburg, capital city re...

- Winter is far from over and as millions of us are still cleaning up after the last storm, we need to be prepared for the next one, whether it comes or not!
During the Blizzard of 2016 eighty million Americans were impacted by a full list of winter weather types. Sleet, snow, freezing rain, high winds and damaging storm surges contributed to more than 40 lives being lost as the system moved from the Deep South into New England.
Many of those lost in this event could have been saved with a little preparation and caution.
One of the most common indirect killers after winter storms is heart attack caused by over-exertion, usually from shoveling snow. If you're heading out with your shovel, make sure you're in good health; moving snow can be more strenuous than many normal exercises! Warm up before you start, use a small shovel to move many small loads instead of fewer large ones and take frequent breaks!
And while it's easy to see how ne...

- As Locals Prepare for Snow, Baltimore's Totals Cost of January Blizzard at $9.4M

- TOWSON, Md - It cost about $54,000 per hour to plow snow from each of the 8,742 roads maintained by Baltimore County and $109,000 per hour to spread salt on these roads. That's according to a report released by Executive Kevin Kamenetz on Monday totaling costs accrued by the county due to January's historic storm as the Baltimore area preps for another anticipated storm this week.
The record-breaking January Blizzard was the heaviest and most costly single snowstorm in Baltimore County's history, and Kamenetz says officials are using lessons learned to ready for a forecasted Monday night snowfall.
Salt supplies have already been replenished - salt storage capacity was increased by 20,000 tons this year, allowing 80,000 tons of salt to be stored in 15 salt barns around Baltimore County. The January Blizzard cost the county $9.4 million, surpassing two 2010 snow storms that cost $4 million and $7 million respectively. The storm exceeded a $6 million "placeholde...

- This weekend, a big coastal storm system moved up the east coast dropping flooding rain and heavy snow along its path and the Upper Midwest got dumped on again, too.
In the South, North Carolina was a winter weather target. In Dunn, quick bursts of heavy snow transitioned to a snow sleet mix first, then to long-lasting rain, causing street flooding around the area, as nearby counties delayed the Monday morning school start because of icy roads.
Way up the coast, in Massachusetts, huge snowfall covered Worcester. The heavy snow not only made the roads treacherous, keeping road crews at work for hours. And it wasn't just the snow on the road that was a problem, at its heaviest fall rates, it dropped visibility to dangerous distances too.
The heavy wet snow also brought down huge tree limbs, making for dangerous travel and causing sporadic power outages.
Then on to the upper Midwest, where Minnesota got another dose of heavy snowfall...

This low pressure center hugged the coast allowing rain to develop into snow early this morning. This low pressure center and frontal boundary offshore will continue to bring a mix of rain and snow into Saturday morning. This will remain a headache for commuters as they hit the road across the Northeast. Snowfall accumulations of 11+ inches have already been reported and will likely increase for some locations the next 12 hours. Snowfall rates of 1" per hour of the heavy wet snow will be favorable to produce power outages and more downed trees throughout the overnight. Numerous airline carriers waived change fees for flights to this region.

While most are talking about the possible Nor'easter this weekend for the Mid Atlantic and the Northeast, these storms will actually bring heavy snow and some ice south of the Mason Dixon line as they move from west to east.
The first of what could be several waves move across the country today. A little rain, sleet and snow fell in Denver, Colorado early Tuesday morning. But as this storm moves east today it will bring the snow with it. From Kansas City, Missouri to Knoxville, Tennessee. In general, we're looking at 1"-3", but some could pick up a quick 3"-5".
Here's the thing, this is just the first of what could be three storms. The next one will track through Thursday and Saturday. There's still some uncertainty, however, as it stands now, there could be an additional 3"-5" in most locations.
Obviously we will continue our conversation about the potential for big snow in the northeast....

In desperate need of more rain, an El Nino winter could mean relief. The warming waters in the Pacific mean a wetter-than-normal winter for the Golden State.

- The answer is yes, but not like it does above the ocean. It's something totally different, but fascinating.
"Marine snow", as they call it, is all the plant and animal material falling to the bottom of the ocean. In addition to dead animals and plants, marine snow also includes fecal matter, sand, soot, and other inorganic dust. It's referred to as “marine snow” because it looks a little bit like white fluffy bits. The “snowflakes” grow as they fall, some reaching several centimeters in diameter. Some flakes fall for weeks before finally reaching the ocean floor.
This continuous rain of marine snow provides food for many deep-sea creatures. Many animals in the dark parts of the ocean filter marine snow from the water or scavenge it from the seabed. NOAA scientists and others have measured the amount of useable material in marine snow and found that there is plenty of carbon and nitrogen to feed many of the scavengers in the deep sea.

The state of Washington, is issuing a State of Emergency -- which will allow the Governor of that state to call on the National Guard, if necessary.
Damage impacts are affecting parts of Oregon and Washington state after a parade of storms.
In Rose Valley, Washington, rushing water washed out roads as usually tame creeks raged out of their banks.
And causing even more problems, the water pushed debris from upstream against bridges, causing even more damage.
In Snohomish, Washington, major river flooding threatened homes and businesses all along it's banks, rising much higher than normal.
