- Description
- (10/1/15) – oaquin became a tropical storm Monday evening (EDT) midway between the Bahamas and Bermuda and has now formed into a hurricane, the 3rd of the season--the difference is Joaquin could impact the US East Coast.
GPM captured Joaquin Tuesday, September 29th at 21:39 UTC (5:39 pm EDT) as the hurricane moved slowly towards the west-southwest about 400 miles east of the northwestern Bahamas. At the time, Joaquin had been battling northerly wind shear, which was impeding the storm's ability to strengthen. However, compared to earlier in the day, the system was beginning to gain the upper hand as the shear began to relax its grip. At the time of this data visualization, Joaquin's low-level center of circulation was located further within the cloud shield, and the rain area was beginning to wrap farther around the center on the eastern side of the storm while showing signs of increased banding and curvature, a sure sign that Joaquin's circulation was intensifying. - Each year, flooding kills more people than any other severe weather-related hazard. The Downtown Aquarium in Denver, Colorado has a flash flood display that educates people on the deadly power of flash flooding.
It starts with thunder, then a warning, and before you know it thousands of gallons of water fill the canyon.
“This is a North American landscape. You could find this in Utah, Arizona, California, [and] Colorado,” said Chad Ashley from the Downtown Denver Aquarium.
2,000 gallons of water rushes through the canyon in a matter of seconds, showing visitors the horrifying power of flash flooding.
“Snow run off, ice melt can cause flash floods, heavy rains that encounter grounds that are already saturated and can’t absorb any more water, as well as heavy rains that encounter grounds that are so dry that it can’t absorb the water,” Ashley explains.
The flash flood display has been around as long as the aquarium its...

- There is no voodoo here or David Copperfield magic here just the true science and facts.
Acording to NASA's Jane Houston Jones from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California:
On the evening of September 27th, observers in North and South America will see a long total lunar eclipse--lasting 72 minutes. This eclipse is also visible in Europe and Africa.
It's the night of the harvest moon--the full moon closest to the September equinox. "Equinox" is derived from the Latin for "equal night." So day and night on the 27th will be roughly of equal length, and the sun will rise exactly in the east and set exactly in the west.
Sometimes a full moon is called a "supermoon"--a term coined just a few years ago. A supermoon is a new or full moon which occurs when the moon is at or near its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit. There are 4 to 6 supermoons every year on average, so they're not unusual. You won't really be able...

The Summer heat is dangerous for everybody; it's been the number one weather related killer in the U.S. for the past ten years.
High heat and humidity can reduce your body's ability to cool itself and that's dangerous for anybody spending time outdoors without proper shelter or who may overexert themselves. Major Christopher Brett is chief of ambulatory nursing at Fort Mead and gives us early warning signs that can lead to more serious heat related complications.

And with dust on the horizon in Marana, Arizona, check out the rain in the foreground as this little storm dropped a small wet microburst over a large field.
Meanwhile in North Dakota, it was wind-driven rain and hail that spread across Spiritwood Lake. The rain went horizontal as the storm pushed wind gusts up to 70 miles-per-hour (MPH)!
Michigan had its share of strong winds too. Concert-goers dealt with blowing dust, leaves and everything else picked up by the gusts before they could get to shelter in Detroit. And in Greenville, Michigan there was some wind and small hail, but their main problem came from torrential rain that filled gutters and flooded roads....

- For the first time ever, the U.S. Forest Service is spending more than half of its budget to suppress wildfires. And a new report says in 10 years the Forest Service will be spending over two-thirds of its budget to battle wildfires.
According to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, "(The Forest Service is) not in a position to do the restoration and resiliency work that’s important and necessary, not just to keep our forests healthy, but also to reduce the risk of these intense, enormous fires that we are now fighting."
He also says natural and human factors are increasing the cost of fighting fires. "We now have more communities that have been located in and around one of our forests. Hazardous fuels build up has increased in part because of climate change. We see drier conditions. There’s also the issue of the beetle infestation in the western part of the United States that’s impacted 45 million acres of trees."

On Saturday, severe storms rolled into Arizona and just as the sun went down, the storms developed, fueled by a return of the moist monsoonal winds. The storms dropped plenty of rain and lit the sky with another beautiful, albeit dangerous lightning display in Tucson.
A little later Saturday evening, it was Nebraska's turn and this storm dropped a large tornado in Elk Creek, south of Omaha. It was a large funnel that developed near 9pm CDT on Saturday, but luckily it formed over fields and stayed out in the open country.
Sunday, we saw big storms in Lindsay, Nebraska. High winds tossed aluminum sheets around like paper. The storms also dropped torrential rain and hail upwards of golfball size for a short time.
In Missouri, they were watching lightning bolts as storm passed through St. ...

So far this season, we've seen three tropical storms in the Atlantic basin. Ana made landfall in South Carolina in may. Bill came ashore in Texas in June, then Claudette followed, staying out at sea.
Today, Dr. Gerry Bell, NOAA's lead seasonal hurricane forecaster, gave us the newest outlook...
"We're announcing that we have an even higher confidence that this year's hurricane season will be below normal. In addition, we've lowered the likely ranges of expected storm activity since our May outlook.
Dr. Bell says these numbers include Ana, Bill and Claudette and are well below the seasonal averages of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. This reflects a combination of three factors, the strength of the current ...

- Description
- Thunderstorms are nothing new for residents in the Southeast. Warm, humid, tropical air lingers in the summer months as the culprit for many afternoon pulse storms. Pulse storms are periods of quick updrafts that have the potential to produce severe weather, then fall apart just as fast. A downdraft is produced as these storms collapse that can produce winds surpassing 60 mph.
Thunderstorms may be nothing new or rare in areas like Alabama in August, but tornadoes are! Alabama's most active tornado season is March through May with April being the peak month. Later on in the summer, Alabama's tornado activity starts to decrease until it spikes slightly again in the Fall. On average, Alabama averages about one tornado in the month of August. The suspected tornado Thursday night in Troy, AL looks to be number one for August 2015, with two thirds of the month to go.
This possible tornado is being investigated by the National Weather Service as they survey structural...
