A short period of successive littoral explosions at the Puhi-o-Kalaikini ocean entry, where lava exiting the tube enters the water. The explosions were throwing ejecta up to about 20 meters. The video was taken with a high zoom factor from the top of the sea cliff, well away from the entry point and not on the lava delta.

The lava lake deep within the vent cavity at Halema'uma'u crater remains active, with ongoing degassing and circulation of lava. This Quicktime movie shows the view in the vent today with a thermal camera, and the video is set at x4 speed to better show the slowly moving lava surface. Today, the lava surface was moving at a rate of about 18 meters per minute (or about 0.7 miles per hour).

Time-lapse photography of the transition from fall-to-winter, the buildup of shelf ice, flow constriction, and jamming of river ice along the Niobrara River in the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in north-central Nebraska. Flow in the photos is from left to right. Photography was taken along the south (right) bank approximately 2.1 miles upstream from USGS streamflow-gaging station 06461500. The rapid change of lens angle in final days of sequence is due to pressure from ice jamming on the flood plain pushing against the tree where the camera was mounted. The camera was approximately 6 feet above the 2-year flood plain, and was eventually flooded, presumably due to backwater from ice jamming, causing shutdown.

Hydrologists with the Nebraska Water Science Center use geophysics to unlock the groundwater mystery in eastern Nebraska. Because the area was a dumping ground for glacial till when the glaciers retreated 12,000 years ago, the groundwater resources are hard to quantify with more traditional surveying techniques such as test-hole drilling. Geophysics uses electromagnetic waves to take a "CAT Scan" of the Earth via helicopter, allowing scientists to see where water-bearing units are likely to be located beneath the Earth's surface and providing a less expensive way to survey this geologically complex terrain.

This video describes causes of wetland loss in the Mississippi River Delta. Rapid land subsidence due to sediment compaction and dewatering increases the rate of submergence in this deltaic system. The construction of levees along the lower Mississippi River also has reduced delivery of sediments to coastal wetlands, which have been deteriorating as soil surfaces sink and wetland plants are subjected to excessive flooding. Other factors that have contributed to land loss include construction of canals and periodic hurricanes. Sea-level rise can lead to movement of saltwater inland, but coastal plants tolerate salinity through several morphological and physiological mechanisms. A caldera is a large, usually circular volcanic depression formed when magma is withdrawn or erupted from a shallow underground magma reservoir. It is often difficult to visualize how calderas form. This simple experiment using flour, a balloon, tubing, and a bicycle pump, provides a helpful visualization for caldera formation.

The USGS recently constructed a computer model of groundwater in the Mississippi embayment. This model was used to simulate the rise or decline of water level in a deep aquifer. Water from this deep aquifer is utilized to meet the industrial and public supply needs in the area. In the animation, groundwater levels decline more than 400 feet from 1870 to 2007 in some areas of the deep middle Claiborne aquifer in Arkansas and Louisiana. When pumping is forecast to 2038, based on trends of past pumping amounts and climatic variations, areas of water level declines from 100 to 200 feet expand throughout Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

During the course of our research on walruses hauled out near Point Lay in early September, USGS obtained aerial video footage of the walrus aggregation. This footage was taken from an altitude of 4,000' with a Cineflex camera by Daniel Zatz, of Zatzworks, on contract to USGS for this work. We are exploring the potential of this type of video for enumerating the numbers of walruses hauled out, as well as the sex and age composition of the herds. This first effort was a pilot to test methodology. Recognizing the broad public interest in seeing what is going on at Point Lay right now, we have arranged to make the video publicly available. Urban development is associated with an increase in impervious surfaces, that is, surfaces such as rooftops, sidewalks, and streets that prevent precipitation from infiltrating into the groundwater. Impervious surfaces increase the volume and energy of stormwater that reaches streams and can lead to adverse physical and water quality impacts, including erosions and increased nutrient runoff. The December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters of modern history, killing over 225,000 people. As a result of this catastrophe, the U.S. Geological Survey has partnered with the international community to create an Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System (IOTWS). On September 30, 2009 a M7.6 earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, near the cities of Padang and Pariaman, affecting an area with a population of 1.2 million people. The Indonesian government estimates that the earthquake caused 1,195 deaths and significant damage to around 140,000 houses and 4,000 buildings. Most of the casualties were due to building damage and collapse in Padang and landslides in the outlying mountain regions.

- This movie shows video taken during today's field visit and overflight. The first portion of the video is taken at the rim of Pu`u `Ö `ö crater, and shows the north vent feeding the lava pond. The lava surface undulates due to rising gas bubbles, and a small overturn is triggered. The second portion of the video shows an open stream of lava at the summit of one of the rootless shields on the Quarry flow.

- This movie shows the active lava pond within Pu`u `Ö `ö crater, imaged with a thermal camera. The video is shown at x60 speed, and covers about 25 minutes. Lava is being supplied to the crater from two vents, one visible in the upper right corner of the image and one out of view in the lower left. Crustal foundering events, in which a section of the thin surface crust ruptures and sinks, exposing the hot interior of the pond, are common. This view is towards the north.

- This video is from a thermal camera looking into the vent cavity at Halema`uma`u around 3pm today. The video is shown at x4 speed. At the beginning of the clip, the lava level is at a high stand, with slowly migrating crustal plates and little spattering. Eventually, small scale spattering begins in the northeast corner of the pond, accompanied by vigorous degassing. As the violent spattering disrupts the surface crust, the lava level falls as the gas volume is released. In this example, the lava level dropped about 30 meters (100 feet).
