- What are Westminster Hall debates? | House of Commons
- Date posted
- Description
- Westminster Hall debates are held in the Grand Committee Room, a specially converted space off Westminster Hall. All debates here are neutrally worded, general motions that begin “That the House has considered [a specific matter]”.
The principal Deputy Speaker, the Chairman of Ways and Means, has overall responsibility for the business at all sittings in Westminster Hall. Debates are chaired by an MP selected from the Panel of Chairs.
MPs cannot vote on, or propose an amendment to, motions in Westminster Hall. If the question is challenged the Chair reports to the House of Commons, and this could lead to a vote in the Commons Chamber.

- Description
- Watch PMQs with British Sign Language (BSL) - https://youtube.com/live/_TDq35y4QlE
Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday the House of Commons sits. It gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer MP, or a nominated minister.
In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance.
The Leader of the Opposition, Kemi Badenoch MP, asks six questions and the leader of the second largest opposition party asks two. If another minister takes the place of the Prime Minister, opposition parties will usually nominate a shadow minister to ask the questions.

- The FCDO’s approach to displaced people – International Development Committee
- Date posted

- Description
- Ahead of the Spending Review and amid sharp aid cuts, how will the UK Government ensure its development spending delivers value for money, and how is it approaching the long-term needs of people displaced from their homes?
MPs will ask Development Minister Baroness Chapman to set out the Government’s position on these issues as she gives evidence to the International Development Committee on Tuesday 3 June. Defending the Government’s decision to cut aid to 0.3% of gross national income (GNI) the Minister previously told the Committee that the days of “viewing the UK Government as a global charity are over”, and said the UK would focus on “partnering, not paternalism,” helping other countries to build their own capacity for development.
MPs will likely ask the Minister how she and her department would define value for money in aid, what role philanthropic organisations and the private sector will play in development, and whether these partnerships...

- Adjournment debates in the House of Commons take place at the end of every sitting day, and are a chance for backbench MPs to raise an issue on any subject the Government is responsible for.
They are an opportunity to enable debate on a topic without calling for legislation. Following the MP's speech, a minister will respond.
There is no time limit, but adjournment debates are usually held for half an hour. If the adjournment debate ends before its allocated time runs out, the Speaker will put the question “That this House do now adjourn", and the House adjourns.

- 🔴 LIVE: Prime Minister's Questions with British Sign Language (BSL) - 23 April 2025
- Date posted
- Description
- Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday the House of Commons sits.
