- Watch an International Women’s Day talk by historian Helen Langley, with an introduction by Eleanor Laing, about Irene Ward MP.
Before Gwyneth Dunwoody, Irene Ward was the female MP with the longest total service at almost 38 years. She was a formidable and independent-minded backbencher, who secured the passage of a number of private members bills including the Rights of Entry (Gas and Electricity Boards) Act, 1954, introduced as a Ten Minute Rule Bill. The legislation required a warrant for entry into private premises, except for emergencies. She introduced the first measure of social welfare for the elderly in the form of the Poor Law (Amendment) Bill 1937-8 enabling the payment of pocket money for old people in Poor Law institutions. Irene Ward also promoted the Nurses (Amendment) Act, 1961, and the Penalties for Drunkenness Act, 1962. Dame Irene was an assiduous and formidable attender of standing and select committees. - Following the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Lord Howard of Effingham commissioned some tapestry weavers in Brussels to weave ten large tapestries to commemorate the victory, which hung inside the House of Lords Chamber from the 1650s. However on the night of the 16th October 1834, fire struck. The tapestries that had hung for almost 200 years inside the House of Lords, perished.
When the new Victorian Palace was built, it was decided that the iconic Armada tapestries should be remembered in painting form. However just one painting was completed. It was only in 2007 that the Armada project was bought back to life after a generous donation by Mark Piggott KBE.

He uses as an example of the work the Committee has undertaken on the common law doctrine of joint enterprise, where the Committee carried out an inquiry which resulted in new guidelines for prosecutors in joint enterprise cases being issued, and on which a follow-up inquiry has produced further recommendations and kept the issues involved at the forefront of public debate.
