- To mark the 35th anniversary of the unveiling of a statue of Clement Attlee by Ivor Roberts-Jones in the Member’s Lobby of the House of Commons, Dr Jonathan Black discusses Roberts-Jones (1913-1996) and his significant public sculpture in and around the Palace of Westminster including the iconic statue of Churchill in Parliament Square.
Dr Black’s monograph, ‘Abstraction and Reality: The Sculpture of Ivor Roberts-Jones’ argues that despite being a largely unfamiliar name, Roberts-Jones should be understood as a major British twentieth-century sculptor of public memorials and portrait busts.
Dr Black is Senior Research Fellow in History of Art at Kingston University. We are grateful to the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Kingston University for supporting this talk and the accompanying display and publication ‘The Attlee Memorial Statue in the House of Commons’.
