The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is the consultative interparliamentary body for NATO, and the Assembly’s current President is UK MP Madeleine Moon.
The Assembly brings together legislators from all NATO member states and is the vital link between NATO and the Parliaments of its member states.
This year’s annual session will see around 600 delegates – including parliamentarians from NATO countries and partner countries, UK ministers and defence experts – gather to discuss international security issues.

- Sir Vince Cable was elected as the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament (MP) for Twickenham in London at the 1997 General Election. He made his first speech (known as a maiden speech) in the Commons on 11 June 1997 in a debate on the Bank of England.
He was re-elected at the 2001, 2005 and 2010 general elections. In the 2010-2015 Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition Government, he served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, and President of the Board of Trade.
He lost his seat to Conservative Dr Tania Mathias at the 2015 General Election, winning it back two years later in 2017. He became leader of the Liberal Democrats in July 2017, before standing down in July 2019.

Purpose of the session

Last week, the Commons were unable to find a majority in the first set of indicative votes. Today, a further set of indicative votes will take place in order for MPs to attempt to find an option which can gain a majority support.
This comes as the result of an amendment in the name of Sir Oliver Letwin, which secured Parliamentary time for debate and a series of votes on various Brexit scenarios, to see which, if any, might command a majority in the House of Commons.

The Committee decided to have a single debate on three petitions relating to leaving the EU that had reached 100,000 signatures. It wanted to ensure they were debated as soon as possible, so they would be less likely to be overtaken by events. The petition to “Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU” is the most signed petition ever received on the House of Commons and Government petitions site.
