- Description
- Today is the third of three days of big Brexit debates in the House of Commons this week. On Tuesday, MPs rejected the Government’s Brexit deal in the second ‘meaningful vote’. This was followed by a debate and votes yesterday in which MPs voted against leaving the European Union without a deal.
Now MPs are considering extending Article 50.
Article 50 of the 2009 Lisbon Treaty sets out how a member state leaves the European Union, with a two year period between the member state "triggering" the Article and the day that the state leaves the Union.
The UK Government triggered Article 50 on 29 March 2017 so is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019. If the Article 50 period is extended, the UK would remain a member of the European Union during this period.

Question Time in the House of Commons is an opportunity for MPs to question government ministers about matters for which they are responsible.
Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday that the House of Commons is sitting and gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister.
In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance.
The Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn asks six questions and the leader of the second largest opposition party asks two.

- Description
- From 3pm: the House of Lords is debating the negotiated withdrawal agreement and framework for future relationship with the EU. Members have had their say over three days of debate in the chamber. Members are debating two connected motions.
The first motion, put forward by the government, proposes that the House takes note of the negotiated withdrawal agreement and framework for the future relationship with the EU.
The second motion, proposed by the opposition, notes that the House of Commons must determine the matter, but that the House of Lords emphatically rejects a no deal outcome to negotiations with the EU. The opposition motion also regrets that the withdrawal agreement and political declaration would do grave damage to the future economic prosperity, internal security and global influence of the UK.
If the government motion passes, it will fulfil the House of Lords' obligations under the EU (Withdrawal) Act, section 13(1)c.

- From 3pm: @UKHouseofLords is debating the negotiated withdrawal agreement and framework for future relationship with the EU, the #BrexitDeal. Members have had their say over three days of debate in the chamber. As well as the government motion to take note of the agreement and framework, members are debating two connected motions.
First, Baroness Smith of Basildon, Lords Leader of the Opposition, has put down a motion that would reject a no deal outcome and regret the terms of the deal. If agreed, this would not stop the deal but would put on record the House of Lords’ opinion.
Second, Lord Butler of Brockwell has put down a motion that would change Baroness Smith’s: it would reject a no deal outcome but would not regret the terms of the deal. Again, if agreed, this would not stop the deal but would put on record the House of Lords’ opinion.
