- Development economist Dipa Sinha and RTI activist Nikhil Dey spoke to The Wire about the messages emerging from the newly elected West Bengal government. The discussion in the state is increasingly about exclusion, not inclusion, in welfare policies and schemes. There is a concern that decisions on welfare benefits might be based on the SIR conducted in the state. The SIR outcome is also being linked with citizenship, which, they warned, could have dangerous consequences for the country as a whole. It is not just the voter struck off the rolls in SIR who may be excluded from welfare but, in many cases, entire families that depend on the voter to access schemes that give the most marginalised some dignity and ability to survive. There is no denying that voter rolls need to be corrected from time to time, but the concern is about the consequences of linking the exercise to welfare and citizenship.

- The Delhi government has once again failed to control the Yamuna River pollution in Delhi.
At Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj ghat, plastic waste, garbage, and toxic white foam floating on the river water can be seen at several spots.
Over the past decade, the Delhi government has announced several plans and spent thousands of crores to clean the Yamuna River.
However, the ground reality has hardly changed. Pollution from major drains, untreated sewage discharge, and administrative failures continued to worsen the condition of the Yamuna day by day.
The Wire’s Atul Howale visited the Kalindi Kunj Ghat area to report on the rising pollution in the Yamuna through this ground report.

This year’s central theme focused on the legal and social means available to challenge and eventually bridge India’s caste divide.
The Wire spoke to lawyers and academicians at the event, who reflected on how caste hierarchy continues to manifest itself. From the recent protests over the UGC’s Equity Rules to allegations of bias within the judiciary and bureaucracy, speakers noted that while constitutional safeguards and structural remedies do exist, people from marginalised communities often continue to struggle for institutional support.
